The Maze is the sixth episode of the second season of Locke & Key. It aired on October 22, 2021.

Summary

At the annual Winterfest celebration, Kinsey tries to play it cool around Gabe while a key found by Bode and Duncan may offer a way to take down Dodge.

Plot

Now knowing that Gabe is Dodge, Kinsey Locke lies and tells him that the Memory Key did not work on her uncle, and Gabe leaves Keyhouse emptyhanded. Bode Locke returns from his visit to Rufus Whedon and shares his findings, allowing the Locke children to deduce that they threw Ellie Whedon through the Black Door the previous year. They also realize Gabe intends to coerce Duncan into making a key for him.

The next morning, Nina Locke is in high spirits after having spent time with Josh Bennett. Bode and Duncan hear whispering in the house, and find a key with a chain design on the shaft. Duncan consults Erin Voss, who claims to be seeing the key for the first time. In the Matheson Academy dorm, Josh announces his displeasure at having one of his artifacts (actually a piece of Whispering Iron taken by Gabe and Eden Hawkins) stolen. To Eden's chagrin, her mother Carol Hawkins turns up unannounced for Winterfest, the town's winter festival. The Locke children agree to act nonchalantly at Winterfest, and refrain from spreading word that Gabe and Eden are demons. As a precaution, Bode reminds his siblings of the tracking app in their phones.

At Winterfest, Bode and Kinsey struggle to remain casual around Jamie Bennett and Gabe respectively. In a fit of childish mischief, Jamie takes Bode's bag and phone, and runs into a maze of hay bales, forcing Bode to follow. Tyler asks for Jackie Veda's consent to use the Memory Key on her, but she declines, not wanting the bad memories that come with magic. At Keyhouse, Erin steals the newfound key from Duncan, takes a padlock from the basement, and heads to Winterfest. Later, Duncan finds a note from Erin explaining her resolution to apprehend Dodge, and uses the Anywhere Key to travel to Winterfest to stop her.

At the fairgrounds, Josh receives an anonymous tip as to the identity of whoever stole his artifact, and forgoes spending time with Nina in favor of pursuing the lead. Carol reveals that she discovered Eden's father to be cheating on her. Eden suggests murdering him, and Carol thanks her daughter for her support. Eden notices Duncan arriving at the fairgrounds, and notifies Gabe, who immediately leaves Kinsey's side. Worried, Kinsey meets up with Tyler, and they enter the maze after tracking Bode's phone. Not long after, Duncan, Erin, and Gabe and Eden enter the maze in separate parties.

Tyler and Kinsey manage to meet up with Duncan, Bode, and Jamie. Erin confronts Gabe alone and uses the Chain Key on the padlock, restraining the demon with magical chains, but Eden attacks her and the demons claim ownership of the two magic items. Erin pleads with Gabe, believing Lucas Caravaggio to be dormant inside his body, and Gabe breaks her neck in response. He uses the Plant Key to bury Erin's body, and leaves the scene with Eden. The Lockes arrive too late, frantically tearing at the vines swallowing up Erin, only to watch her body disappear into the ground.

Later, Gabe refuses to believe that Kinsey lied to him about her uncle, and Eden warns him not to deceive himself. Emboldened by Erin's sacrifice, the Lockes invite Gabe for a visit to Keyhouse the next day.

Trivia

For allusions made in this episode, click here.
  • It is shown that adults who use the Memory Key on themselves can hear the keys' ethereal whispering.
  • While tracking the whispers from the Chain Key, Duncan finds a drawer filled with a large amount of teddy bears, although he does not know what they were for. This may be an allusion to the Teddy Key from the graphic novels, which was hinted at by Meredith Averill.[1]
