Utamu are a species of grub native to the Pride Lands. They are preyed upon by honey badgers, meerkats, and warthogs.

History

Bunga's first hunt for Utamu

Well, utamu brought me together with my Uncle Timon and Uncle Pumbaa.
―Bunga[src]

One day, while Timon and Pumbaa were searching for Utamu grubs, an infant Bunga approached them and attempted to stay with them. Doubtful of Bunga's usefulness, Timon tasked him with fetching some Utamu grubs from a dead tree. To his surprise, Bunga succeeded at retrieving the grubs, and so, he finally allowed him to live with him and Pumbaa.[1]

Bunga's second hunt for Utamu

It means it's the peak of the rainy season! It's time for Utamu! I've gotta go get some!
―Bunga[src]

When the Lion Guard walked past Mapema Rock, Bunga realized that it was time to hunt for Utamu grubs. Before he could start his search, however, the Guard got called away on a mission. Afterwards, Kion agreed to help Bunga find the Utamu grubs, with some help from Beshte and Ono. At first, the Guard appeared to get lost in their search, but Bunga instructed his friends to follow several nearby dung beetles.

While following the dung beetles, Bunga told his friends about how he had met Timon and Pumbaa. After the story, he attempted to climb a long-dead tree to fetch some Utamu grubs, but the branch he was standing on broke due to decay, and the Utamu fell into the ravine below. Heartbroken, Bunga returned to his uncles and admitted that he had failed to catch any Utamu. To his surprise, Timon reminded him that they celebrated not because of the Utamu, but because of their relationship with Bunga. They then revealed that Utamu grubs had "fallen out of the sky", and the group shared in a feast of grubs.[1]

Bunga's return to the Pride Lands

Upon returning to the Pride Lands from his trip to the Tree of Life, Bunga feasted on Utamu grubs with Timon and Pumbaa at Hakuna Matata Falls.[2]

Physical characteristics

Utamu are fairly large, bulbous grubs with dark purple backs and light purple underbellies. They have huge pink eyes and small pincers.[1]

Sociocultural characteristics

Utamu grubs are considered the rarest grub in the Pride Lands, as they only emerge for one day at the peak of the rainy season. They tend to live in dead trees.[1]
