You can't outrun us. We can run forever.
―Baasho, as he chases Simba[src]

Baasho is a male hyena. He is the second-in-command of Banagi's clan.

Baasho lived in the Pride Lands with his clan. When a rogue lion named Scar wandered into the kingdom, the hyenas schemed with him to overthrow Mufasa. Their plot succeeded, with Scar killing Mufasa and Baasho seemingly killing off Mufasa's heir Simba. Under Scar's rule, the hyenas prospered. However, when Simba returned to the Pride Lands as an adult to reclaim his birthright, he overthrew Scar and forced the hyenas' submission.

Biography

Early life

Baasho lived in the Pride Lands. He served as the lieutenant or second-in-command of Banagi's clan, only under Banagi himself.[1]

Alliance with Scar

Baasho: But how do we know he won't turn on us after we get rid of Mufasa?
Banagi: Because he's so dumb, he wouldn't know how.
Baasho: And how do we know none of us will get hurt?
—Baasho shows his mistrust of Scar[src]

Baasho and Banagi gathered nearby after Mufasa gave the other animals permission to eat from his pride's catch. While Banagi was resentful of Mufasa for taking claim to the work of the lionesses, Baasho was more neutral, unwilling to make the matter into a conflict. After the lions left, Baasho and his companions took their fill of what was left of the meal.

Years later, a stranger named Scar entered the savanna, and Mufasa confronted him over a piece of stolen prey. As the two lions engaged in a fight, Baasho and his fellow hyenas watched the brawl. After the stranger's defeat, Banagi was outraged and followed the rogue to the border, offering to help him defeat Mufasa.

The hyenas delegated over whether they should trust Scar, with Baasho hesitant to help the rogue in case he turned on them once Mufasa was dead. Banagi, however, was persistent and worked his clan into a frenzy over the idea of them becoming kings once Scar was the ruler of the savanna.

The plan went underway, and Baasho joined his clan in building ranks around Scar as he challenged Mufasa. The hyenas joined the attack, driving Mufasa back, with Scar gaining the upper paw. With no chance of defeating his foes, Mufasa died, and the hyenas ran in pursuit of Mufasa's son, Simba.

The chase lasted for days, with the hyenas cackling at Simba's heels, until the young lion finally gave up and attacked Baasho head-on. In the midst of the tangle, Simba ran into a rock, which turned out to be a rhinoceros. In answer to Simba's pleas, the rhino chased the hyenas, including Baasho, who bit through a section of Simba's tail in an attempt to keep from falling off a cliff. The tail snapped in his mouth, and Baasho fell alongside his fellow hyenas down the high cliff.

Bruised and defeated, Baasho returned to Banagi with Simba's tail still hanging in his mouth. In a rage, Sarabi lunged at him, but Scar jumped between the two and pulled Sarabi off Baasho, demanding she hunt for him as punishment for her recklessness.

The demented reign of Scar only intensified, and the hyenas prospered under his terrible power. However, their fears were aroused when Scar began to grow close to Nala, a fine young lioness who threatened to wedge herself in-between the king and his cronies. In an attempt to see how fast their relationship was growing, Baasho and a few of his friends spied on the two in the forest, but a storm uncovered their deception, and Scar lashed out in anger.

Banagi begged Scar for forgiveness, and Baasho lied, claiming to have never been in the forest in the first place. He then made the mistake of blaming Nala, who became the butt-end of Scar's rage and, as a result, a convict in flight from the pride.

When Nala was used by Simba as bait for Scar, Baasho and his fellow hyenas tried to warn their king that it was a trap, but Scar was fooled, and the hyenas were captured by the lionesses, who gave them to Simba for a final decision regarding their fate. Mercifully, the new king let them go, though he banished them to the desert, with the threat of death should they return.[1]

Alliance with Scar

Stop them! If they hurt each other, they can't hunt!
―Baasho on the lionesses[src]

Baasho and Banagi attempted to intimidate a rogue hyena into joining their ranks. In the midst of the meeting, Simba made a surprise appearance, bursting into the hollow with a warthog hot on his trail. Taking advantage of the moment, Banagi instructed Baasho to chase the warthog away from his prey.

The hyenas later gathered around a kudu, freshly caught by the Ndona lionesses. Mufasa appeared and asked Baasho where his leader was. Banagi himself appeared, and Mufasa offered to give the hyena clan his pride's prey in repayment for saving Simba. With the pride gone, Baasho and his companions tucked in, though they were immediately chased off by a rogue lion named Scar, who, in turn, was driven out by Mufasa.

Baasho later delivered news to Banagi. Shortly afterward, the hyenas met with Scar and offered him their allegiance. When the rogue lion got into a fight with Mufasa, Baasho and several of his companions attempted to help the stranger in defeating their king, but Scar was outraged that he was receiving help, so Banagi called off Baasho and his helpers.

When Mufasa was at last defeated, Simba attempted escape, and Banagi sent Baasho after the young lion. Several times, Baasho came close to killing Simba, but Zazu drove him back each time, protecting his prince. At last, Baasho had Simba hanging by his tail over a cliff, and the tail snapped, sending Simba reeling to his death, while Baasho trooped away with what was left of Simba's tail in his mouth. Still holding his prize, Baasho returned to the pride and reported the deaths of his fellow hyenas, who had joined Simba in the plunge over the cliff.

Many days later, Baasho was hired by Banagi to spy on Scar, who was getting dangerously close to Nala. The two decided to make Nala "disappear," and Baasho was hired to do the deadly task himself. At night, he took a group of hyenas in search of Nala, but the mission ended up a failure.

Nala later showed up and started a fight with Sarabi, pretending that Sarabi had stolen Scar's attention from her. Afraid that the lionesses would hurt each other, Baasho attempted to break up the fight, but Banagi pulled him out of the fray and ordered the clan away.

The hyenas later returned during the confrontation between Scar and Simba, during which Banagi instructed Baasho to kill the winner. When Simba emerged the victor, the hyenas attempted to kill him, but he drove them off one by one, before finally throwing Banagi to his death. The remaining members of Banagi's clan submitted to Simba, as he was their new king.[2]

Physical appearance

Baasho is a large and powerfully built hyena. He has a brown spotted pelt, with dark ear tips, legs, muzzle, and tail tip. He has black eyes.[1][2]

Personality and traits

Baasho: I was right here, I swear.
Banagi: There was no one. No one has followed you since that time you caught Baasho. I couldn't make them follow you if I wanted.
Scar: Whoever it is, I'll kill 'em.
Baasho: Maybe it was one of them. Did you ever think of that?
—Baasho frames the lionesses[src]

Baasho is fairly even-tempered and level-headed, unlikely to jump into a conflict without first thinking through the outcome of the situation. He is somewhat quiet by nature, rarely lending an opinion unless the matter is of great concern to the future of his clan. His natural instincts are cautionary, and he rarely takes to trusting strangers.

Unlike Banagi, Baasho is more tolerant of his enemies than his fellow hyenas, as he was willing to accept Mufasa's dominance over the clan. He is timid in the presence of higher-ranking animals and prefers to stay in the background. This is most likely due to his subordinance to Banagi, who is somewhat abusive of his second-in-command and prone to scoffing at Baasho's tentative precautions. The script describes Baasho as being Banagi's "obsequious pal," rendering them friends but not equals.[1]

Hyena: I coulda' swore I heard somebody.
Baasho: Don't crack up on me.
—Baasho and a fellow hyena[src]
Baasho is cunning and ruthless. He has a quiet demeanor, but is devious and untrustworthy. He often serves as a spy, acting deceptive and slick, and is able to play the part of an innocent bystander while keeping tabs on the Ndona pride. Baasho is quite sarcastic and assertive. He is well-attuned to his leader Banagi, who views Baasho with respect. Additionally, Baasho is clever, intelligent, and capable of carrying out Banagi's demands.[2]
