Monti, Timon

Timon: Do you or anyone associated with you celebrate Bestest Best Friend Day?
Baampu: Never heard of it.
Timon: Perfect. You'll do nicely.
—Baampu and Timon[src]

Baampu is a male warthog.

When Timon and Pumbaa had a falling out, Timon replaced Pumbaa with Baampu as his best friend. However, Timon did not connect properly with Baampu, who acted completely differently than Pumbaa. Eventually, Baampu ran into his former best friend, Monti, who had befriended Pumbaa, and the two reconnected readily. They departed together, thereby abandoning Timon and Pumbaa.

Biography

Early life

Baampu: Monti?!
Monti: Baampu?!
Baampu: Monti, is that you?
Monti: Baampu, it's been years!
—Baampu reunites with Monti[src]

Baampu lived within or close by the jungle. He used to be best friends with a meerkat named Monti until the two lost track of each other for several years.[1]

Friendship with Timon

Baampu: Timon?
Timon: Yeah?
Baampu: Ever wonder what those sparkling dots are up there?
Timon: Baampu, I don't wonder. I know!
Baampu: What are they?
Timon: They're fireflies. Fireflies that got stuck up in that big, bluish-black thing.
Baampu: Oh, okay.

When Timon was in need of a new best friend, he sought out another warthog to replace Pumbaa. Among a group of other animals, he spotted Baampu, and Timon proceeded to question the warthog about his name, his reaction to predators, and his affiliation with "Bestest Best Friend Day." Pleased with what he heard, Timon declared Baampu to be his new best friend.

Later that night, the two were stargazing, and Baampu questioned Timon about the "sparkling dots" in the sky. Timon declared them to be fireflies, and Baampu, satisfied by his new friend's answer, lapsed into silence. Though the warthog was content, Timon was upset that Baampu did not show as much interest in the stars as Pumbaa once had.[1]

Reunion with Monti

Baampu: So what have you been up to, buddy?
Monti: Oh, you know, the usual stuff, Baampu.
Baampu: Are you still an expert at making those rue nut soybean pancakes I like so much?
Monti: Are you still an expert at eating them?
—Baampu reunites with Monti[src]

The following morning, Baampu and Timon ran into Monti and Pumbaa at a water hole. Surprised to see each other, Baampu and Monti greeted each other as old friends. In their haste to reestablish their friendship, they forgot about Timon and Pumbaa, and walked off into the grasslands together.[1]

Physical appearance

Baampu bears a striking resemblance to Pumbaa; both are portly warthogs, with large heads, thin legs, and curved white tusks. However, Baampu's skin is navy blue, and he has a brown mane. He also has black eyes.[1]

Personality and traits

Baampu: Can I help you with something?
Timon: Actually, my friend - or potential friend - do you mind if I ask you three personal questions?
Baampu: Not at all.

Baampu is the polar opposite of Pumbaa. Rather than question his friends and make assumptions about the world around him, he is dim-witted and slow, accepting the beliefs of others and not offering a voice of his own. In everyday life, he is much the same, more likely to observe his surroundings than question them. He is rather laid-back and quiet, as he rarely speaks, instead letting his friend Timon carry the majority of their conversations.

His easygoing nature is evident in the way he reacts to meeting other animals. Baampu seems rarely bothered by personal intrusions, giving hardly a reaction to a stranger's prying. He makes friends quite easily, as he was willing to accept Timon as his new best friend almost immediately.

Around Monti, Baampu comes alive, turning into a loud-mouthed jokester with an opinion of his own. His reunion with his friend also reveals him to be oblivious to the feelings of others, as he walked off with Monti without giving Timon a second thought. He does, however, seem to genuinely care about his old best friend, as he remembered many memories from their time together in the past.[1]
