T-Wayne

T-Wayne is a collaborative mixtape by American singer T-Pain and American rapper Lil Wayne. Recorded in 2009, it was delayed due to Lil Wayne's legal troubles and was unexpectedly released for free streaming on May 18, 2017, by Nappy Boy and Young Money Entertainment. T-Pain initially leaked a cover for the album and then several hours later posted it in its entirety for free download on mixtape sharing sites.[1]

Robert Christgau for Vice's Expert Witness stated, "A goof for the record book slapped together in 2009, with Wayne ascendant and the Auto-Tune king jacking his steeze, is strongest at its silliest, natch."[2] Brian Duricy of PopMatters wrote an ambivalent review, remarking, "T-Pain is a seer and Lil Wayne a timeless talent; both, however, have anachronistic elements in having peaked so young and so brightly. Thus, T-Wayne runs the risk of sounding intrusive instead of a welcomed guest who arrived oh-so-late. Luckily, both performers understand the caveat of attaching high stakes to the album, and as such, coast gleefully."[3]

Pitchfork editor Jayson Greene also wrote in mixed assessment, critiquing T-Pain's verses and Wayne's delivery. He conceded, "On the Oompa-Loompa sampling 'Listen to Me,' he finds a spot just left of the beat to slip-side his flow, elevating a goofy song into giddy territory. This is the guy, we're reminded, that ripped up verses into the little streaming bits of confetti [...] He doesn't have too much else to say here, but even for a few unheard verses, we can thank T-Pain's restlessness."[4]
