Jason Birchmeier of AllMusic remarked how Wayne "shows substantial growth" and added, "Wayne is out to prove himself as more than a teen phenomenon, showcasing a socially conscious side largely absent on his debut."[1] Anthony Decurtis from Rolling Stone wrote, "Mannie Fresh is at the board once again, and the beats here are staccato and jittery, suited to Wayne's precariously controlled persona." Decurtis added of the label's seemingly longevity in hip hop.[2]

RapReviews's Steve "Flash" Juon penned, "The whole problem here is that Wayne seems to be coasting – happy with the status he has right now [...] Wayne is a youngbuck, so here’s hoping that he will work on his writing and try to do something more compelling than just looking hard – and that he will work on that delivery too."[3] Vibe stated, "...Its N.W.A meets Mannie Fresh style wins, and Wayne emerges as the most active street hustler riding in the iced-out CMR machine..." The A.V. Club editor Nathan Rabin gave a generally favorable review, writing, "The album's subject matter—selling drugs, shagging groupies, killing substantial portions of the dirty South—is hardly novel, but Wayne imbues his work with a sense of boyish enthusiasm that keeps matters from getting too grim, in the process capturing the visceral immediacy of Cash Money's best work."[4]
