Lieutenant

Lieutenant is a rank in the Los Angeles Police Department. It is senior in rank to Sergeant, Detective, and Police Officer, but inferior to Captain.

Lieutenants are usually the Captain's second in command in a department, and some Lieutenants such as Archie Colmyer are known to assign cases, rather than the Captain.
