The Devil of Ducommun, their infamous curse and an ill-omen. They are currently placed in "the old chapel, in the castle's southern wing, where the ancient gods were once worshipped" by the duke's orders.[1]
Appearance
The devil was partitioned into nine parts by Kretschmann, and placed separately in nine stone coffins or sarcophagi.
- "Is that it? The devil of the Ducommun family? They look like ordinary coffins to me."[1]
Personality
Background
"Heh. I'll put your body in the coffins and offer you as a tribute to the Ducommuns. Your corpse will be passed down from generation to generation… and all at the hands of your lover… for she's possessed."[2]
Kretschmann to Johannes: "[You're] a void created so that my son's lover could have the cruelest, most cumbersomely long end. It was all for the sake of your bloodline, for the son that you'll someday have… For my son's incomplete soul… which has caused him to have to live for all eternity! Every one of your emotions, every little choice you make… will suffocate the woman you love. Everyone entangled with that woman will meet a tragic end! The chains will break only when the coffins' power ceases. So if you wish to save that woman, have her spill her blood over the last coffin. Have her pray for this curse to come to an end. Once the last bit of power is exhausted, the devil's body will return to dust, and my son's soul will finally be set free." [3]
Duchess Valdemar to Johannes: "When the last piece of the devil in the coffins is wished upon, he will finally cease to exist." [3]
After all the men in the Ducommun family were slaughtered in the war,[Who?] Duchess Valdemar became the coffins' sole owner, and they are brought to Gustave castle. According to the duchess, only four of the coffins remains unopened, but when Giovinetta seeks them out, she discovers that only one is left untouched.[4]
Abilities
If a Ducommun makes a wish upon the coffins, it appears to fulfil their wish in a most twisted way, through a distorted interpretation of the wish.[3]
Trivia
- According to the Ducommun legend, Giovinetta's great-great-grandfather is said to have chopped the devil into nine pieces and sealed each piece separately in great stone coffins.[4] Although, this claim can be disputed, as it is shown that it is Kretschmann who partitioned and sealed the devil.[2]
