Mey-Rin (メイリン, Meirin) is the maid of the Phantomhive household.

Appearance

Mey-Rin is a young woman with hazel eyes and straight maroon-red hair, which is often tied in high pigtails. She wears large, thick, round glasses, a gift from her master,[11] in order to see up close; her vision otherwise is extraordinary, as she can, according to her previous boss, see and shoot targets from a thousand miles away.[12] Her arms bear numerous scars due to her harrowing past as a child sniper.[13]

Mey-Rin dresses in a maid's uniform designed by Nina Hopkins, which consists of a chemise with black stockings, a bulletproof corset, a petticoat, a dress with a matching apron with special buttons that enable her to tuck her skirt in the garter belt and carry magazine pouches, a white frilly cap, and lace-up boots.[14][15]

As a child, Mey-Rin pretended to be a boy; she kept her hair short and wore boys' clothes.[16]

Personality

Ch165 Mey-Rin sniper

Mey-Rin is a determined, strong-willed individual who seeks to prove her worth.[17] Like the other Phantomhive servants, she is fiercely loyal to Ciel Phantomhive and deeply respects Sebastian Michaelis, whom she has a crush on[18] because of his appreciation of who she is and her skills as a sniper.[19] Upon working for Ciel, she is allowed to wear skirts, which pleases her,[20] and she is given glasses, which she cherishes and refuses to replace with new ones.[21] She tends to remove said glasses whenever she assumes her role as a sniper so that she can focus on great distances.

Mey-Rin, although clumsy and ungainly as a maid,[22] remains an invaluable servant, for she is an exceptional sniper who guards Phantomhive Manor at night and dispatches enemies. She can discern far into the distance and aim and shoot with impeccable precision.[23] She prefers not to use a scope, keeps an abundance of rifles on the rooftop of the manor to reduce reload time,[24] and expertly wields high-powered rifles, handguns, and other firearms.[25]

History

Ch158 Jan and Hao are thrown off the roof

Mey-Rin and her parents came to England on a tea clipper. However, some time afterward, her parents died in an epidemic, and Mey-Rin was left to live in the streets of a foreign country.

She eventually met Jan and Hao to whom she introduced herself as "Rin." They created a stealing technique based on Mey-Rin's special eyesight: While the boys distracted rich-looking women, she shot down one of their earrings. Hao and Jan quickly grabbed it, and they went to sell it for food. Their method proved to be quite effective and everything went well until they decided to rob a woman in front of the Royal Opera House in 1877:[26] The woman got hurt from Mey-Rin's shot, and her enraged husband ordered his subordinate Haku to go after Jan and Hao who had run away with the woman's earring.[27]

While Mey-Rin waited for Jan and Hao on the rooftop, her friends were caught by Haku, and when he threatened to sell their livers on the black market, they told him about Mey-Rin. Shortly afterward, Jan, Hao, Haku, and his companions went to Mey-Rin. One of the men dangled Jan and Hao from the roof while Haku gave Mey-Rin two choices: If she shot off an earring from an Opera House attendee, she would be spared. If she did not, she and her friends would be tossed off the roof.[28]

Mey-Rin complied and shot off one of the attendees' earrings—much to Haku's amazement. However, he had only promised to spare her, and his companion threw Hao and Jan off the roof.[29] Still shocked and crying, Mey-Rin was taken into Qīng Bāng as their "brother."[30]

She was trained to use firearms,[31] and a while after becoming a member of Qīng Bāng, Mey-Rin was assigned to her first mission: to assassinate Yang, a top official of their rivals Gelaohui.[32]

Ch44 Mey-Rin's past

In 1887, Mey-Rin was still operating as an assassin for Qīng Bāng under the nickname "Owl"[33] when she received the task to hunt down and kill the Queen's Watchdog Ciel Phantomhive.[34]

Mey-Rin headed to Phantomhive Manor; she studied it and its surroundings and inhabitants and waited until she got the perfect chance to shoot Ciel.[35] However when the time came, she missed and had to retreat and rethink.[36] Mey-Rin did not get far enough though as she was caught by Sebastian Michaelis running after her at inhuman speed. At the same time, Sebastian approached her, Mey-Rin's associate Dove attempted to silence her but was promptly taken down by Sebastian. Mey-Rin was then disarmed and brought to the manor.[37]

Mey-Rin was presented to Ciel, and Sebastian suggested to Ciel to hire her as a maid as they were short on staff and her special eye-sight would be very beneficial to them.[38][39] Mey-Rin could not imagine herself to work as a maid and refused.[40] Still, Ciel invited her to eat with him, and upon tasting the warm bread and stew, Mey-Rin broke down and stuffed herself.[41]

Sometime after Mey-Rin was successfully recruited, Sebastian introduced Baldroy to Mey-Rin and Finnian, and vice versa, and informed him that house steward Tanaka was on a leave of absence, and so he, the butler, was in charge. He added that Baldroy that he must fill the post of chef. Baldroy, unimpressed with the servants' appearances, assumed that they would be incompetent private soldiers who would surrender even to kids. When Sebastian is summoned to Ciel's room, Mey-Rin and Finnian set out to do work.[42]

Later, Baldroy was turning the spit to make roast chicken. Mey-Rin entered the kitchen to speak to Sebastian, and Finnian informed her that Sebastian was not there. She said that Sam brought an abundance of milk, cheese, and milk, but she could not carry them all. Finnian offered to help, and the two of them walked out, chatting about breakfast.[43]

Baldroy was so lost in thought that he did not notice the chicken was on fire. Sebastian had to shout for his attention. With the chicken burnt once more, Sebastian commented that perhaps he should be teaching Baldroy how not to waste burnt chicken, rather than how not to burn chicken. Mey-Rin and Finnian tasted the burnt chicken, which they found unpleasant. Baldroy muttered that the food was fine as long as it was edible.[44]

Ch180 Flashback - Mey-Rin

Sometime later, Mey-Rin informed Sebastian that Sam had brought them that week's food. Sebastian ordered Baldroy to come along, for he was the "expert at manual labor."[45]

One night, when assailants trespassed on Phantomhive Manor, Mey-Rin and Finnian worked together to kill most of them. After Finnian met up with Baldroy, a man lunged at them. Mey-Rin shot the man in the head and advised Finnian not to let his guard down.[46] Baldroy scolded Finnian for losing track of how many intruders he killed, asked where Ciel's bedroom was, and rushed upstairs, leaving Mey-Rin and Finnian.[47]

The next morning, after the incident was resolved, Finnian notified Sebastian of Sam's arrival with that week's food and went to unload the cart with Mey-Rin's assistance. Sebastian had Baldroy come along.[48] After chatting with Sam and his grandson, the four of them headed into the manor with the food.[49]

Plot

Black Butler Arc

Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Finnian, Tanaka, and Ciel Phantomhive observe the match between Sebastian Michaelis and a martial artist outside Phantomhive Manor. Sebastian vanquishes his opponent, which impresses them. Afterward, Sebastian instructs them to perform their duties.[50] When the Phantomhive servants make a mess prior to and during Chlaus’s visit, Sebastian cleans up after them and rectifies the various issues.[51]

One day, Elizabeth Midford visits and adorns the manor in extravagant furnishings, as well as dresses up the servants.[52] They dance alongside Ciel and Elizabeth.[53]

At one point, the Phantomhive servants attempt to exterminate rats, which have been biting the wires in the manor.[54] Sebastian effortlessly gets rid of the rats.[55] After Ciel is taken by Azzurro Vanel and while Mey-Rin is delivering to Sebastian the ransom letter she has received, a sniper attacks, but fails. Sebastian tells the servants to clean and cook and leaves after declaring that he will return before dinner.[56] Later, Sebastian returns with Ciel, and the servants welcome them home.[57] When the servants discuss the Azzurro Vanel case, Sebastian orders them to do work.[58]

Red Butler Arc

In the morning, Sebastian Michaelis assigns Mey-Rin, Baldroy, and Finnian their individual tasks for the day while Tanaka loiters.[59] When the Phantomhive servants make a mess, Sebastian cleans up after them and rectifies the various issues.[60] After Sebastian discovers that his chocolate statue is missing a head, he and the other Phantomhive servants hunt down Tanaka, assuming he is the culprit, but it is actually Ciel Phantomhive.[61]

When Ciel and Sebastian leave for London, the Phantomhive servants stay behind at Phantomhive Manor.[62]

On December 13, the Phantomhive servants prepare for Ciel’s thirteenth birthday, which coincides with Elizabeth Midford and Francis Midford’s visit. Sebastian redirects Francis away from the disasters the servants inadvertently cause.[63] They all celebrate Ciel’s birthday.[64]

Indian Butler Arc

Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Finnian, and Tanaka frolic in the snow.[65]

Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis bring the Phantomhive servants along to the Phantomhive townhouse in London while they investigate a case. The servants meet Soma Asman Kadar and Agni.[66]

The next day, Agni fulfills household duties on the servants’ behalf, to their astonishment.[67] Later, Agni collaborates with them and gets them to work efficiently.[68]

The servants watch and assist Sebastian in preparing for the curry competition.[69][70] The servants also participate in taste-testing the different curries.[71][72]

The servants accompany Ciel, Sebastian, and Soma to the curry competition.[73] The servants are jubilant when Sebastian’s curry dish garners rave reviews from the judges.[74] Queen Victoria arrives, to their shock, and crowns Sebastian the winner. The servants rejoice.[75]

The servants are pleased when Soma reconciles with Agni and stunned when Queen Victoria refers to Ciel as “boy.”[76] They congratulate Sebastian on his victory[77] and enjoy the view of the evening sun.[78] Soma hugs Ciel and cries over Mina while the servants look on.[79]

The next day, Sebastian assigns Mey-Rin, Baldroy, and Finnian their individual tasks for the day while Tanaka loiters. Agni helps out, as well. The servants voice their appreciation for their current lives at the manor.[80]

The following day, the servants bid farewell to Ciel and Sebastian, who are heading to London to investigate Noah's Ark Circus. Ciel tells them to take care of the manor.[81]

Circus Arc

Ch33 Mey-Rin

When the first-tier circus members, except for Snake, Joker, and Doll, invade the Phantomhive Manor, Mey-Rin, Baldroy, and Finnian go on a defensive mode. When Wendy and Peter move in to slice Finnian in half, she kills Wendy with a single shot.[82]

Peter, taking note of the sniper, runs to the western rooftop to take her out. However, due to her exceptional skill in using rifles, he realizes he is outmatched. When he attempts to flee, she shoots him from behind with a shot powerful enough to send him through a window into the Phantomhive Manor, killing him in the process. The sound of the window breaking wakes a sleeping Elizabeth, but Tanaka reassures her that the sound only came from her dreams, further demonstrating the servants' abilities.[83]

Mey-Rin also helps prevent Beast and Dagger from getting very far into the manor by shooting at them through the windows, helping to prevent and control their movements. Baldroy aids in this by informing her of where they seemed to be heading.[84] As a result, she and Finnian are able to chase Beast and Dagger down into the kitchen, where Baldroy ultimately eliminates them both.

Later, when Ciel and Sebastian return to the manor, Mey-Rin, Finnian, and Baldroy are reprimanded for destroying much of the mansion in eliminating the first-tier circus members. They are set to work cleaning up the mess. When Nina Hopkins arrives, she greets Mey-Rin warmly, grabbing her breasts and legs, causing Mey-Rin to blush. Mey-Rin then leads Nina to Ciel upon Nina's request.[85]

Phantomhive Manor Murders Arc

When Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive at Phantomhive Manor, Grey immediately begins to attack Baldroy and Mey-Rin. They work together to block him, with Mey-Rin using her hidden guns to attack. However, Grey is exceptionally fast, and rushes past her, cutting the guns with his sword. He then moves to slash her with the sword, but Baldroy intervenes, prompting Grey to stomp on her chest instead. Sebastian's aid is eventually required, and he prevents Grey from further attacking Baldroy and Mey-Rin. After the fight is over, Phipps assists Mey-Rin by helping her stand up and returning her eyeglasses to her. Later, Grey and Phipps tell Ciel and Sebastian that the fight was done merely to see how good the Phantomhive defenses are.[86]

From Double Charles' visit, Ciel agrees to host a party. Mey-Rin, along with the other servants, are responsible for the preparations and clean up.[87] After the festivities, the guest of honor, Georg von Siemens, requests attention. She and Sebastian go to his room to see what he wants. When they arrive, a loud scream comes from his room that attracts the attention of the other guests. Inside, they find that Georg has been killed.[88] When asked for their alibis, the servants say that they were cleaning together.[89] While sleeping after the party, Sebastian wakes Mey-Rin up. He gives her an owl with a letter and tells her to release it at dawn.[90] The next morning when Sebastian is found dead, a crying Mey-Rin and Finnian try to console Ciel. In his anger, he slaps her. When Finnian yells at the guest for discussing Sebastian's death in front of Ciel, she apologizes for him.[91] Tanaka, who Ciel appoints as his butler, gives the servants their jobs and sends them on their way. Later, Arthur Conan Doyle tries to put the three deaths in order. The servants say that Sebastian talked to all of them the night of his murder, and this proves he was the last to be killed.[92]

Everyone's luggage is checked for the key to Ciel's room. The women's luggage is checked by another woman, so Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao check Irene Diaz's. While searching, she finds out that Irene is much older than she looks. She begins cleaning up after Ran-Mao and finds a bottle with red liquid in it. She recalls that Patrick Phelps was found with two puncture wounds in his neck, and she begins thinking that Irene is a vampire. But before she can finish the thought, Ran-Mao begins playing with Irene's clothes, and Mey-Rin goes to stop her.[93]

Ch44 Finny and Mey-Rin crying

The key is still not found after all the luggage is checked, and Lau comments that Sebastian might have thrown it out the window. Finnian decides that he will look outside for it, and Mey-Rin decides to go with him. Baldroy follows them to try to get them back inside, but they refuse. Finnian begins crying, and Mey-Rin joins him. Baldroy reminds them of their job to protect the manor and Ciel. Tanaka then appears with umbrellas for them and tells them that they do not have enough food. They all go to the kitchen and begin planning how to deal with the lack of food. Jeremy Rathbone then shows up, and the servants capture and tie him up. They bring him to Ciel. When he is freed, he asks that the bodies should be placed in separate rooms; the servants are asked to handle this. Finnian says he thinks they can trust him, but Baldroy and Mey-Rin tell him that he will get hurt if he trusts too easily.[94]

Later, the servants are trying to figure out what to serve since they are out of meat. Jeremy comes in, and he helps them prepare dinner out of the few ingredients and herbs they have. Mey-Rin then remembers the red liquid that Irene had and tells Jeremy about it. He says he thinks he knows what it is and will tell them later that night. After the supper, the servants watch as everyone compliments the food.[95]

When everyone is waiting to see who Patrick's killer was, the servants all stand around Ciel with makeshift weapons to protect him. After Jeremy reveals who the killer is, Finnian brings up Irene's red vial. Mey-Rin yells at him, but Jeremy explains anyway. His explanation leaves the servants exasperated.[96]

Mey-Rin goes to Sebastian's funeral with Ciel and the other servants. After Sebastian rings a bell to show he is alive and is unburied, the servants and Elizabeth jump on and hug him while crying.[97]

Luxury Liner Arc

Ch51 Seeing them off

Sebastian informs the servants that there will be an addition to the household. Snake's snakes then enter the room and cause Mey-Rin to run from them. Snake begins naming all of his snakes, while Mey-Rin nervously looks at them.[98]

Mey-Rin goes to see off Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake off as they board the Campania. Sebastian leaves them with the order to do their jobs properly. Ronald Knox then appears and asks her for direction. After she tells him, he offers to treat her to tea later, but she declines and says that it's her first time being hit on.[99]

Life returns to normal after Ciel's return. The main servants participate in Elizabeth's Easter egg hunt game. Sebastian decides the teams, and Mey-Rin is paired with Baldroy. They easily defeat Nina Hopkins and Edward Midford; Mey-Rin smashes their egg with a slingshot.[100] Victorious, Baldroy tells them that if they let their guard down, they will lose. Baldroy suddenly remembers some eggs he had placed under a chest. He and Mey-Rin both look for them. Sebastian and Ciel suddenly hear an explosion; Sebastian comes into the hall and sees both of them completely disheveled. Baldroy states that he had forgotten he had planted explosives in the eggs and placed them there.[101] Sebastian cannot understand why he would do such a thing. Both Baldroy and Mey-Rin are then disqualified.

All of the servants are present and cheering when Ciel presents Elizabeth with her Easter egg.[102]

Public School Arc

Mey-Rin is sitting with the servants on the grounds at Ciel's cricket match. Elizabeth is also with them. Baldroy comments that this is bad. Finnian questions him about what's wrong; he also adds that the Blue House is "going out so fast." Mey-Rin comments that Blue House sucks, but Elizabeth insists that they must cheer. Furthermore, since Mey-Rin and Finnian are unaware of the rules, Baldroy explains them in detail.[103] When he's finally finished, Mey-Rin exclaims that the game will last so long. Baldroy reassures them that that's why he's here as a chef—the food he has prepared will sustain them through the game.[104] Mey-Rin and Finnian, however, talk to each other quietly. They feel that Baldroy's food may kill Elizabeth.[105] They wonder what they can do to "save" her. Watching their lively behavior, Sebastian wonders what they are doing.

Later on, everyone enjoys the food immensely; Baldroy is happy they like it, but comments that it is not the pie he made.[106] Mey-Rin and Finnian can't explain what happened, but they are glad the pie disappeared.

Mey-Rin stands alongside everyone else when they see how great Ciel looks.[107] They all laugh good-naturedly when Ciel falls into the water after the boat ride.[108] During the final party, everyone is present and enjoying themselves.

They all welcome Ciel and Sebastian back home after the pair returns from boarding school. Baldroy explains that Old Man Sam's fence broke and all the sheep escaped. [109] Mey-Rin tells one of the sheep not to eat her dress. Ciel suddenly laughs and tells Sebastian to handle the situation.

Sebastian in the morning supervises the entire household's chores. [110] Then Mey-Rin, Snake, Baldroy, and Finnian accompany Ciel and Sebastian to London. Mey-Rin and Finnian marvel at a large clock. Baldroy explains that it's Big Ben.[111] Ciel takes all of them with him as he goes through different stores. Ciel buys Mey-Rin a new pair of glasses; she comments, however, that it's not good to see so much. [112]

Finally, they are at a store where the latest Funtom perfume is being sold.[113] Suddenly, a scream shatters the air, and Sebastian leaves Ciel in Baldroy's care. Later, a crowd of people rushes to buy the perfume, surprising everyone.[114]

Emerald Witch Arc

All five members of the household accompany Ciel and Sebastian to Germany. Standing in the village square, Baldroy complains that his butt hurts since they've been sitting for so long. Shocked, Mey-Rin replies that he's being indecent. She and the other servants load their luggage into a second carriage, and they ride into the Werewolves' Forest.

The group sees a village in the forest, and everyone disembarks from the carriages. [115] Once Sebastian reaches an agreement with the Emerald Witch, the group follows her and her butler to the Emerald Castle . 

When they arrive at the manor, they are amazed at its magnificence. Inside, Sieglinde tells Wolfram Gelzer to show the servants to their quarters.[116] Later, she and the other servants offer to help Sebastian with dinner (he politely declines, knowing disaster will follow). 

After Ciel's bout in the forest, she and the other servants wait in his room for him to come around. When he wakes screaming from a night terror, Mey-Rin is almost in tears. [117] When Ciel knocks Sebastian's hand away, clinging desperately to Finny, they are all confused.[118] 

After they've left the room, Mey-Rin begins to cry about Ciel's condition. Baldroy tells her to stop, saying it's bad luck.  [119]

In the morning, Sebastian greets all of the servants.[120] He puts Mey-Rin in charge of the linen. Sebastian continues to take care of Sieglinde. Meanwhile, the servants discuss the situation in the kitchen. While Snake and Baldroy badmouth Sebastian, she defends him, saying that he must have his own plan. [121] Tanaka (in his real form) sips tea and adds that it's a butler's duty to return his master to his perfect condition. [122]

Sieglinde later addresses the rest of the Phantomhive household. She tells them that Ciel's eyes are fine; the condition was mostly psychological. [123] All of them are extremely relieved. Baldroy immediately suggests that they head back to the manor so Ciel can get some real rest. [124] Mey-Rin states she knows he just wants to cook him some meat. Finnian wants to make snacks, and Snake wants to make scones all for Ciel. Sebastian sighs and asks them not to increase the workload.

Meanwhile, Finnian is taking care of Ciel when a werewolf attacks them.[125] The servants burst into the room, drawn in by the commotion.[126] Sieglinde says something about a ritual and leaves with Wolfram.

A few minutes later, Mey-Rin and the other servants are trying to coax Ciel out of the covers.[127] Sebastian suggests shocking him some more, but Tanaka is against this. Tanaka states it would be best to watch over Ciel until he'd gets better. Baldroy adds that this is the reason that he doesn't like the occult. [128] Sebastian agrees to not try anything strange-just to sit and wait.[129]

Later on, she is there when Snake reports that Oscar found werewolves under the castle.[130] They believe Sieglinde is in league with the werewolves; however, Mey-Rin states her concern and worry for Ciel was not false. [131] Snake adds that there is a magical charm on the door that forbids intruders' entry.[132] Mey-Rin asks Sebastian how he will proceed, and is told to carry out her usual duties and help distract Wolfram from his absence.[133]

When Wolfram and the other maids return, she, Baldroy and Snake are helping the maids prepare dinner. While she and Baldroy try and fail to speak with Wolfram in English, one of Snake's snakes wraps itself around Anne. Flustered, Mey-Rin peeks from behind her fingers.

When Sebastian drags Finny from his post in Ciel's room, the Phantomhive servants decide to eavesdrop on them. When Ciel is restored to normal, they tumble in when the door opens. [134] When Ciel apologizes for his carelessness and asks that they continue to serve him, they respond with "Yes, my Lord.".[135] 

When Ciel asks them to forget about his previous unseemly behavior, Mey-Rin deduces that he was vaguely conscious throughout the duration of it.[136] Ciel confirms, telling her he didn't want to behave like so. When Ciel reads the contents of the Queen's letter to him, he orders them to make preparations to leave. [137]

With a rifle strapped over her back and her glasses off, Mey-Rin and the other servants wait for Ciel's signal. When Ciel fires the flare, she and the others set off to find him. [138] 

In the forest, the servants follow Snake to find Ciel. She takes off her glasses and spots him and Sieglinde from a distance.[139]  When they reach him, the escape plan begins. They split into two groups; Ciel with Snake and Baldroy, Sieglinde with Mey-Rin, Tanaka and Finny [140] Ciel's group lures the German troops away from the others.[141]

While Finny is running with Sieglinde and Tanaka in his arms, Mey-Rin is positioned from above a cliff. When he leaps off and into the river, Mey-Rin snipes the German soldiers firing at him. When she notices Grete Hilbard dart out from behind a bush, she is too slow to aim at her. When Grete fires, Tanaka comes into his human form, slicing the bullet into two. He tells Finny to run ahead.[142]

With Mey-Rin's help, Tanaka forces Grete to retreat. Afterward, Mey-Rin comes down to the river, asking if he is alright.[143] They notice a flare in the sky and note that Ciel is changing their escape route. [144]

In the underground room, while Diedrich order Baldroy and Snake to shovel coal into the train's engine, Mey-Rin's group arrives safely. She and Snake oils the joints.[145]

Once the train starts, Mey-Rin sits next to Sieglinde. When Wolfram arrives and takes aim near Sieglinde, she and the others panic, thinking he was there to kill her. When Wolfram instead shoots Grete, who was about to shoot Sieglinde, they are dumbfounded.[146] When Wolfram is shot from behind by Hilde, Mey-Rin restrains Sieglinde from leaping off the moving train and to his aid.[147]

Fortunately, Sebastian and Ciel arrive in time to drag Wolfram onto the train. Mey-Rin helps with preparations to operate on him. The entire group then arrives at Diedrich's castle. Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin comment on how big the house is. They are bemused when Heinrich says this castle, Weizsäcker, is small compared to the main structure. The wounded are treated in the main hall; Mey-Rin and Tanaka offer to help since they are not injured.

Wolfram and Sieglinde are disguised on their passage to England. Mey-Rin asks them to bear with it until they arrive in London. [148] When they arrive, she and the servants go ahead to the manor, while Ciel and Sebastian accompany Sieglinde to Nina's boutique for an outfit. When the group returns, she and the servants greet them. 

Blue Cult Arc

At Phantomhive Manor, Sebastian gathers Mey-Rin, Baldroy, Finnian, Snake, and Tanaka, and gives each of them instructions, save Tanaka, who is told to remain as is, for the upcoming Halloween celebration. Mey-Rin, Baldroy, and Tanaka share details on the Chinese, American, and Japanese Halloween traditions, respectively, which inspires Sebastian.[149]

On Halloween, Mey-Rin and the other servants, dressed in costumes, greet Ciel, when the latter arrives. Mey-Rin, then, mingles with the tenants of Phantomhive land, whom the celebration, which features a combination of various Halloweens from around the world, is primarily dedicated to.[150] Later, Mey-Rin and the others set lanterns afloat into a river to end the night.[151]

At Phantomhive Manor, Mey-Rin, Snake, and Baldroy greet who they recognize as Ciel, while Finnian has reservations.[152]

Sometime later, Ciel and Sebastian enter the manor, where the servants greet Ciel. Ciel is confused when Baldroy asks him why he went out "again" in the rain.[153]

At that moment, "Ciel Phantomhive" descends the stairs, to their collective shock. He scolds a dismayed Ciel for getting drenched and assures him that he will never leave his side again and that he has come home. When Finnian states that it is impossible for there to be two Ciels, "Ciel" asserts that he is real. Finnian adds that he knew something was wrong when "Ciel" came home and calls him an impostor. Amused, "Ciel" declares that the head of the Phantomhive house, Ciel Phantomhive, is actually he.[154]

Blue Memory Arc

To Mey-Rin's and the other servants' disbelief, Sebastian confirms that "Ciel" is the real Ciel Phantomhive. Tanaka soon confirms the same thing and tells them that, fifteen years ago, Rachel Phantomhive gave birth to twins. Pressured by "Ciel" to explain why he deceived them, Ciel calls himself "Ciel's" spare.[155]

Mey-Rin listens to the conversation between Ciel, Sebastian, "Ciel," and Undertaker.[156]

As the conversation draws to a close, Scotland Yard comes bursting[157] in and arrests Ciel and Sebastian.[158] Unable to do anything, Mey-Rin, Finnian, Baldroy, and Snake can only watch them being taken away by the police.[159] However, they help Ciel and Sebastian escape from the police carriage later on.[160][161]

They flee to London and try to find shelter at the Funtom Corporation headquarters. Unfortunately, they have to learn that Scotland Yard is already actively looking for them and have stationed officers at the headquarter's entrance.[162] Afterward, they try their luck at Pitt's photo studio; there, Pitt helps them escape through the sewer system.[163]

Still, Scotland Yard manages to chase them down there, and during the chase, Ran-Mao and Lau collapse part of the sewers to cut them off from the Yard officers[164] and take them to one of Lau's opium dens[165] where they discuss their next moves.[166]

Ciel, Sebastian, and Lau determine that they must leave London posthaste, as Scotland Yard will soon be at their heels. The group ventures by boat through the River Thames, with the Phantomhive household wearing hair ornaments. When the Scotland Yard's Thames Division demands to see Lau and Ran-Mao's cargo, Lau states that he is delivering "flowers," or girls, to his clients, and bribes them. After the officers permit them to pass, the group arrives at the Reading Railway Station and divides, with Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao boarding a train together.[167]

Sometime later, under the guise of two orphaned Chinese sisters, Mey and Ran, Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao head to North Yorkshire to work at Baron Heathfield's manor as maids.[168] There, they are interviewed by Mrs. Abbie and instructed and inspected by Jane and given jobs as a housemaid (Mey-Rin) and a laundry maid (Ran-Mao). Jane then gives them a tour.[169]

Jane orders Mey-Rin to polish the banisters and mentions her poor eyesight and her spectacles. When Mey-Rin reveals that her previous master bought the spectacles for her, Jane comments on how unusually generous her master was, especially for someone who allegedly abandoned her. Mey-Rin is wary of Jane.[170]

While observing the chaos of maids scrambling to apply makeup and look presentable, Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao learn from Jane that Baron Chris Heathfield has returned home from Parliament. Jane states that new hires are to stand in the front row to greet Chris, whom she deems "slightly eccentric."[171]

Subsequently, Mey-Rin, Ran-Mao, and the other servants convene to greet Chris. Mrs. Abbie informs Chris that they have hired four new maids: Mey-Rin, Ran-Mao, Miranda, and Annie. Chris studies them.[172] Afterward, the maids, bar Jane, rave over Chris. One maid discloses that Chris summons a maid to his bedroom every night; a certain maid was his favorite, but she suddenly disappeared one day. Jane claims that the maid must have returned home.[173]

Mrs. Abbie barges in and reprimands the maids for loitering. The senior maids disperse to do work while the new maids are asked to stay behind. Mrs. Abbie tells them to inspect their cuffs and detachable collars every day. Such prompts the new maids to check their cuffs. Annie discovers a note from Chris in hers; Mey-Rin peeks over and reads that Chris has invited Annie to his room that night at ten p.m.[174]

That night, Mey-Rin tells Ran-Mao to keep watch in their room. She then sneaks over to Chris's room and catches sight of Chris and Annie being intimate. Jane grabs her from behind.[175]

Jane leads Mey-Rin to another room. Mey-Rin muses to herself that she did not hear Jane approaching. Jane scolds her for spying on Chris and Annie and reveals that Chris is constantly searching for an ideal substitute for his wife, particularly one whose soul is shaped like that of his wife, since he lost his wife and daughter in a carriage accident several years ago; for that reason, the manor is continuously placing adverts for maids. Afterward, Jane dismisses Mey-Rin to her room.[176]

The next day, Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao learn from the maids' gossip that Annie has disappeared. Mrs. Abbie has them attend the morning gathering, where, once again, Chris studies them. Ran-Mao shows Mey-Rin that she has been invited by Chris.[177]

That night, Mey-Rin reviews the mission with Ran-Mao, who then sets out to extract information from Chris. Mey-Rin stays up the entire night, but Ran-Mao does not return, much to her consternation. When Jane comes in to urge her to work, she tells Jane about Ran-Mao's disappearance. Jane asserts that Chris probably likes her and intends to keep her for a while. Mey-Rin is worried.[178]

Mey-Rin works alongside the other maids. She attempts to sneak over to Chris's room to check on Ran-Mao, but Jane intercepts her and sends her in a different direction.[179]

That night, Mey-Rin dresses in her sniper gear and enters Chris's room through the window. She follows the draft of air to a hidden underground room behind a bookshelf.[180]

Mey-Rin discovers a blood-harvesting operation conducted by Polaris; numerous females who have been hired as maids lie unconscious while their blood is being drawn. Mey-Rin finds Ran-Mao among them.[181]

Jane attacks Mey-Rin. They shoot at each other until they arrive at a standoff. Jane says that she knew from the scars that Mey-Rin is accustomed to killing and promises to pay her triple what she is being paid now if she changes sides and works for them instead. When Jane adds that such is not a "bad deal," Mey-Rin recalls her past.[182]

Mey-Rin agrees that Jane's offer is a good deal, but adds that, while working for her young master comes with its own set of challenges, she would never work for a master who deceives and exploits women, no matter the pay.[183]

Mey-Rin and Jane remain at a standoff. To Mey-Rin's horror, Jane swings her axe at Ran-Mao. However, Ran-Mao dodges the attack, binds Jane in a chokehold, informs Mey-Rin that Jane had put her to sleep, and adds that the sedatives are not effective because she has developed a tolerance through opium.[184][185]

Jane breaks free from Ran-Mao’s chokehold by flipping her. Afterward, Jane surrenders, saying that it is unwise for her to continue fighting Mey-Rin, who, unlike her, is not mercenary, and that she will have Chris relieve her of her duties.[186]

Ran-Mao insists that they kill Jane, but Mey-Rin disagrees. Jane, on the condition that they let her go, apprises them of what she knows: She has been hired and paid well by Chris to guard Heathfield Manor so that no one would be aware of the blood-collecting operation in the basement; every now and then, Abbie would escort a group wearing black hoods to the basement; the collected blood would be smuggled out of the manor.[187]

Ch168 Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao high-five

Mey-Rin is about to tell Ran-Mao to dismantle the blood-collecting operation in the basement, but the latter is already in the midst of doing so, to Mey-Rin’s and Jane’s surprise. Mey-Rin exhorts her to be careful not to kill the sleeping maids.[188]

After Annie and the other maids wake up, Jane tells them to head upstairs, and they comply, chiefly due to their fear of Ran-Mao, who has laid waste to the basement.[189]

Mey-Rin steps out of the storage and informs Ran-Mao that she has disposed of all the blood within. Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao then rejoice in the completion of their mission.[190]

After the maids emerge from the basement in droves, the other maids call the police while Jane detains Abbie and Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao detain the house steward.[191] Mey-Rin looks on as the aggrieved maids rebuke and beat Chris.[192]

With the police soon arriving, Mey-Rin, Ran-Mao, and Jane depart from the manor. Mey-Rin offers to refer Jane for a position, considering that the latter is now unemployed, but Jane declines and declares that she will go somewhere where there are no "troublesome coworkers." Now that their mission is complete, Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao decide to head back to Ciel.[193]

Out of Universe

  • When designing Mey-Rin, Toboso could not get to like the type of hat maids used to wear in the Victorian era, so she opted to draw Mey-Rin with a headdress instead. Nowadays, she has come to like those hats though.[208] Mey-Rin wears one while she is temporarily employed at Heathfield Manor.[209]

  • In the first episode of Kuroshitsuji, according to Mey-Rin's illusion, her eyes were blue.[210]
