Varuna is the God of Water, and is a Fifth Zen god. She has yet to make an appearance in the current storyline of the webtoon, although she appeared in Currygom's side novel, the finite.
Appearance
In the finite, she is described as a woman with long, flowing blue hair tied up in a ponytail, and an alluring face. In the webtoon, she is generally shown in silhouette or in shadow. In her only non-obscured appearance, she wears a tiered dress with puffy sleeves. She has claws on her right hand.
Varuna is an example of a gender-changing god.[1]
Personality
Nothing is known about her personality at this time, other than she is one of the suras' greatest foes.
Skills and Abilities
Varuna's powers are available to humans as hoti varuna (control/summon water) and bhavati varuna[2] (freezing) spells.
Notes
- In Hindu mythology, Varuna is the god of water and the oceans.
Plot
History
Varuna was summoned in the year D914, and allowed Taksaka to enter Mistyshore at Visnu's request.[3]
During Manasvin's visit with Gandharva sometime after the year N0, he refers to Varuna as the greatest sura killer, and that it is very unlikely that she will ever create an ocean in the sura realm for the Gandharva clan.[4]
Season 1
Chapter 6: The Past I Yearn For/Longing for Yesterday
(3) Manasvin, trying to get Gandharva's alliance for an unspecified plan, gives Gandharva an alternative to relying on Visnu's promise of having a god, namely Varuna, make an ocean for his clan to combat the toxicity of the sura realm. Manasvin reasons that Varuna, who gained infamy among the suras as the god who has slaughtered the most of their kind, would easily refuse the wishes of even a primeval god if that god is absent.
Chapter 10: The Night it Rained Fire
(2) Agni is seen fishing with a few other gods, one of whom is Varuna, in the god realm as Brilith wonders if the last ten years he spent with her was just a way of alleviating his boredom.
Season 3
Chapter 40: Twisted Bird
(9) A long time ago, after the annihilation of the Ancient human race, many Gods gather in Hell to ask Agni to give up on his betrothed. The Gods want to annihilate her soul to prevent future problems she may cause. The Gods first tried to convince Yama to cancel the betrothal but Yama refused to do it without Agni's consent. Varuna comments on how firmly Yama follows his beliefs. Agni keeps refusing to cancel the betrothal and some of the Gods start getting desperate. Suddenly, one of the Gods suggests Agni should get betrothed to a better human, which angered Agni.
Chapter 42: Crossroads

(4) Varuna and other Gods listen to Agni's complaints about Gandharva murdering so many humans. Agni wants to stop Gandharva and seeks the help of the other Gods but none of them agree with him. Varuna reminds him that Gandharva is needed for the best possible future and recommends him to get over it and enjoy his life more.
When Chandra brings up the subject of Agni's betrothed, upon noticing how much it bothers Agni, Varuna recommends not to tease him too much or else they will anger him.
Chapter 45: Crime and Punishment
(2) A long time ago, after Gandharva started to annihilate souls, the Gods had a meeting to discuss how to handle the situation. Varuna proposed that the human souls should get transported directly to the Underworld after their death, while other Gods insisted that human souls must have a period of grace in the Human realm. In the end, the Gods could not reach an agreement.
While the Gods kept debating on how to handle the human soul annihilation affair, Varuna became the God with the strongest will to kill Gandharva.
To achieve her goal, Varuna teamed up with Kali, Kubera, and Agni. They converged on the planet Konchez with the intent of killing Gandharva.
