Summer Cake

For other artists known as 'Minkyung' or 'New-A', see Minkyung and New-A.

SUMMER CAKE (썸머케익), also known as Classy (클래시) and formerly as New-A (뉴아), is an independent South Korean singer-songwriter. She is a former member of the female duo HIGHCOLOR.

She eventually debuted as a soloist on November 10, 2020, with the release of her first single, "I Know But".

She is also known for being a former contestant on the reality shows MIXNINE and The Voice of Korea 2020.

Career

2016–2020: MIXNINE, HIGHCOLOR and The Voice of Korea 2020

Sometime in 2016, Minkyung became a trainee under Mostable Music and became a member of their pre-debut girl group Mad Color where she was known as member 'New-A'. As a trainee, New-A, along with fellow Mad Color member Darin, were featured in the OST song "Move" on June 15, 2016 for the drama Tantara.[2][3] The same year, Mad Color became HIGHCHOLOR, and New-A and new member Chanmi were featured singers on MC Mong's song "And You", which was released in his seventh album, U.F.O.[4]

In October of 2017, Minkyung became a contestant on the reality survival show, MIXNINE, as a trainee representing Mostable Music.[5] She was eventually eliminated from the competition on Episode 14 with her final rank in 16th place.[6]

Following MIXNINE, HIGHCOLOR moved to Million Market. Around this time, half the members of HIGHCOLOR also left. With only two members left, it was assumed that HIGHCOLOR had disbanded. However, in early 2019, it was revealed that HIGHCOLOR was now a female duo consisting of only New-A and Suha. As a duo, they released their debut digital single, "MILLION PUZZLE [ The First Piece ]" on February 26, 2019, which featured hip-hop singer Chin Chilla.[7] Unfortunately, the duo never released any further music and New-A (Minkyung) departed from Million Market, effectively disbanding HIGHCOLOR.

In May 2020, Minkyung appeared on tvN and Mnet's reality competitive show, The Voice of Korea 2020, as one of the contestants coached by Dynamic Duo. She made it until the final episode and was the fourth place winner.[8] As one of the show's winners, on November 10, 2020, she got to debut with the release of the digital single, "I Know But".[9] The debut single was also written and produced by her.

2021–2022: Solo debut with "Love Villain", "Dirty My Clothes", "Targetto"

On December 10, 2021, Minkyung, now known by her latest stage name, SUMMER CAKE, made her re-debut as a soloist with the release of the single, "Love Villain".[10]

Less than two weeks later, SUMMER CAKE released a new digital single (labeled as a spin-off single), "Dirty My Clothes".[11]

In January 2022, she was interviewed by Rolling Stone Korea and disclosed that she is planning to release an album during the year.[12]

On February 28, SUMMER CAKE released her digital single, "Targetto".[13][14]

2025: Liminal

On February 20, 2025, it was announced that SUMMER CAKE will release her first EP, Liminal, on February 22.[15]
