Mambo a Go Go

Mambo a Go Go (マンボ ア ゴーゴー Manbo a Gō Gō?) is a music video game produced by Konami and released on June 2001 in Japan.

A release of Mambo a Go Go in the United States and Asia under the respective titles of Mambo King and Mambo Heaven were planned, but this was never materialized.

Gameplay

The players must rhythmically beat conga drums as colored notes fall from the top of the screen. There are 3 drums, each one divided into three sections, giving players a maximum of nine places to hit.

The game predominantly features Latin music, including "Mambo No. 5", "La Bamba" and "El Bimbo", the song that served as the basis for "El Ritmo Tropical" used in the Dance Dance Revolution series.

Mambo a Go Go is probably the most obscure music video game by Konami, as it was overshadowed by another music game produced by Sega, Samba de Amigo. Despite this, some songs, such as "Gamelan de Couple" and "La Bamba", were popular enough to make appearances in other BEMANI series, such as Beatmania, Dance Dance Revolution and pop'n music.

Scoring and evaluation

The scoring method in the stage is completely different from pop'n music and Dance Dance Revolution; as long as the player keeps making "Perfect" and "Great" steps continuously, the combo meter continues. If a combo is broken, the player has to start from the beginning from step one.

A "Delicious" step point is evaluated in y=mx+b function as y=40x+100. That means the first step is worth 140 points, second step worth 180 points, third worth 220 points, and so on.
A "Hot" step point is evaluated in y=mx+b function as y=20x+80. That means the first step is worth 100 points, second step worth 120 points, third worth 140 points, and so on.
A "Nice" step point is flat rate, worth 20 points.
A "Cheap" and "Miss" are worth nothing and lowers the "Mambo Soul."
A combo is broken after a "Nice", "Cheap", and "Miss" steps is/are registered.

For example, in "Demo Play", a combo number of 75 means a player has earned 121,500 points (all 75 delicious/perfect steps).

This evaluation version is similar to Dance Dance Revolution. The "Delicious" classifies as a "perfect", "Hot" = "great", "Nice" = "good", "Almost" = "cheap", and "Boo" = "Miss".

  • A "Delicious" is worth two points.
  • A "Hot" is worth one point.
  • A "Nice" is worth nothing.
  • A "Cheap" subtracts four points.
  • A "Miss" subtracts five points.
