Quan Duan (onyomi: Zen Tan) is a relative of Quan Cong and one of the Wu officers who assists Zhuge Dan during his rebellion. When Sun Chen kills Zhu Yi and demands Quan Duan achieve the impossible task of defeating the Wei forces, he takes his troops and surrendered to Sima Zhao, convincing other members of the Quan family to defect.

Role in Games

Quan Duan first appears in Dynasty Warriors 7 in the second part of Donngxing, reclaiming the western castle from Wei after Zhuge Dan is cut off by the Wu ambush. At Zhuge Dan's rebellion, Quan Duan is among the officers who sally out and fights Sima Zhao's forces at the northeast garrison. News of Zhu Yi's death causes him to switch sides once reduced to half health.

In Dynasty Warriors 8, Quan Duan arrives as reinforcements for the Wu army at the East Gates Battle. At Zhuge Dan's rebellion, Quan Duan immediately switches sides when the Wei forces approach. He is given the task of recruiting Quan Jing. Wang Zuo moves to foil this scheme and must be stopped or the additional defection will fail.

Quan Duan appears in Romance of the Three Kingdoms series' later scenarios. He possesses middling stats that focus on leading armies. In fourteen title, his base stats are: LDR 66, WAR 64, INT 38, POL 38, CHR 58, and he possesses the skill millionaire, which grants an increased income to whatever city he guards.

Quotes

  • "Wait! We can't retreat or Sun Chen will kill us! Let us surrender! Please!"
  • "Master Zhu Yi was executed by Lord Sun Chen?! I'm not about to let the same thing happen to us!"

Historical Information

Quan Duan was a loyal officer of Wu and was also the son or whether nephew of Quan Cong, another general in Wu. Duan first made a name for himself in the year 241 at Shaopo (241). When Zhuge Ke constructed a dam on Chao Lake in Dongxing, he placed Quan Duan in charge of western fortress. Later, when Sima Zhao's forces attacked, Quan Duan was able restrain Hu Zun's army until reinforcement could arrive. He also managed to launched an attack against Sima Zhao himself, which deterred him, helping force an early withdraw. Quan was rewarded for his efforts with a higher position in the Wu army.

when Zhuge Dan revolted at Shouchun in 258, he sent to Wu for an alliance and soldiers to help hold off Wei. Quan Duan was among those sent under the command of Zhu Yi. Most of Quan Duan's family accompanied him on this campaign due to some infighting between the extended family branches. This choice proved fortuitous, for when Zhong Hui leaked fake information that Sun Chen would punish them for not breaking the siege quick enough, Quan Duan and many of his family members were able to peacefully submit to Sima Zhao and Wei.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms has Quan Duan follow his historic self, but with a bit more flair on the dramatic side of things, focusing on his contributions during Zhuge Dan's rebellion. He first appears in chapter 111, appointed by Sun Chen as co-commander of the Wu relief force for Zhuge Dan's forces. He holds this position alongside Quan Yi. In the following chapter, Duan is among the officers to lead a relief force into Shouchun to help bolster its defenses. When Zhu Yi is executed for failing his attack on the Wei besiegers, Quan Duan's son, Quan Wei, is personally threatened by Sun Chen. Chen warns the young man that neither he nor his father could return to Wu without victory. Quan Wei attempts to reach his father in Shouchun to report this distressing news, but is surrounded and captured. Quan Duan soon receives a letter from his son explaining the situation and encouraging Quan Duan and his brother Quan Yi to leave Shouchun and surrender as well. Both Quan Duan and Quan Yi take the advice and join Wei.
