Qiao Mao (橋瑁, onyomi: Kyō Bō) is a minor official who joined the campaign against Dong Zhuo. A relative of Qiao Xuan and the Two Qiaos, he was later killed during a dispute with Liu Dai.
Roles in Games
Romance of the Three Kingdoms portrays Qiao Mao as a skillful officer who specializes in domestic tasks while doing poorly with military-related ones. He only makes an appearance in early scenarios prior to the formation of the Three Kingdoms.
Historical Information
Qiao Mao (?-190), style name: Yuanwei (元偉), a native of Liangzhou, was related to the Han official Qiao Xuan. He gained prestige through his work as inspector of Yan Province and later received a post in Dong Commandery. In 189, he cooperated with He Jin to overthrow the Ten Eunuchs which resulted in Dong Zhuo's rise to power.
To deal with the tyrant, he sent letters to the regional warlords urging them to save Emperor Xian from his oppressor. Led by Yuan Shao, the alliance fought hard to reclaim Luoyang and Chang'an. Right after the Battle of Xingyang, however, an altercation between Qiao Mao and Liu Dai had occurred, resulting in the former's death. He was soon replaced by Wang Gong.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The novel provides a clear reason for his demise. When the Anti-Dong Zhuo alliance ends, Qiao Mao is visited by Liu Dai who asks for grain to alleviate a famine in his region. Unable to comply with his request, he is killed by Liu Dai's forces who ransack his granaries and absorb most of his own troops.
