Jo

Jo is a main character of Kid Cosmic.

Official Description

Jo is a member of the Local heroes. Like most teenagers, she daydreams of seeing the world but is stuck waitressing at her mom's diner in the middle of nowhere. On the surface, Jo may come off like an angsty teen, but the responsibility she takes in looking after Kid proves that she is caring and kind at heart.[2]

Appearance

Jo has brown skin and curly purple hair tied into a bun. She wears a white apron over a pink-and-black striped shirt, with ripped black leggings. She also has a white visor and black-and-white sneakers.

Personality

Jo can be described as kind, caring, loyal, and curious. Albeit suspicious of unknown people, with enough time, she can learn to trust them. She usually spends her time scrolling through pictures of popular tour destinations, as she often gets tired working at the diner, like teens her age, all she ever wanted was to see the world and do something big with her life. She has shown to panic sometimes and easily get stressed out. But she does show the traits of a good leader, competent, mature, quick thinking, responsible, ability to complement the teams abilities, and headstrong determination.

Despite her levelheaded attitude however, she has shown moments of acting very excitable and with the same sort of spirit and passion as Kid does. Because of her age along with her responsibilities in working at her mother's diner, she has become a responsible and capable young lady. Due to her levelheaded attitude and tactical smarts, she acts as the voice of reason. Additionally, she's also not as secure of herself, leading her to be more cautious, grounded and realistic. In fact, her cautious nature and levelheadedness would help her balance out Kid's brashness and impulsiveness and why she would be perceived (and later become) the leader of the team.

Like all teenagers, Jo struggles a lot with identity and her place in life. While she is fond of the diners' patrons, she feels trapped in the area and feels a sense of powerlessness in her life. This leads her to daydream about visiting other places. She feels chafed at having her life uprooted by her mother's decision to move them to the region. It doesn't help that she lacks any peers her age in the vicinity to interact with. It's these factors that led to her bonding with and befriending Kid. The two shared a prominent moment of empathy while Kid was convincing her to become a hero alongside him.

She changes considerably in founding the Local Heroes alongside Kid. Initially, she was hesitant and deferential to her mother, showing a fear in disappointing her. However, by the time her mother discovers the rings, Jo has a newfound confidence thanks to overcoming the various encounters of people wanting the Stones of Power. Being self-empowered now thanks to her experience, she becomes more assertive in her decisions and in remain a hero.

However, this frustration would become explictly evident when the Diner is teleported to space. Now formally the leader of the Local Heroes along with their new mission, Jo is forced to deal with a greater sense of responsability and anxiety, toward between her mother's goals of the diner and her and Kid's mission with hero work.. This along with her desire for more independence would lead her to being mentored by Queen Xhan. While she would gain a boost of confidence, it would also enable some of her recklessness. This along with her decision for independence would lead her to neglect her mother's wisdom indirectly, leading her to make a number of mistakes. Eventually, the frustration would drive a wedge between her and her team. Nevertheless, after Krosh's betrayal and Fantos gaining the stones, Jo showed deep remorse and regret her actions, apologized to her friends and family, and proved herself as a competent leader. By the end, she has grown even moreso, taking her mother's lessons to heart and applying them in her own means.

Trivia

  • The dynamic between her and Kid is inspired by McCracken's relationship with his elder sister.[2]
  • Her name rhymes with her mother Flo and her grandmother Mo
  • In her introductory special short, we discover that she and her mother are not native to the area. After visting Paris for baked goods and trying to conjure a poral back home, she ends up in an urban city block. She ends up telling herself she was thinking of "New Home". This indicates that her mother moving them over to the diner and the surrounding area was actually a recent development. As such, she still subconsciously thinks of her previous living area as home. This also explains her desire to see the world, likely feeling trapped and isolated by her new situation along with the friction with her mother.
