143 is the seventh studio album, and sixth mainstream studio album by Katy Perry. The album was released on September 20th, 2024.
Background
On February 6th, 2024, Katy was announced as one of the headliners of Rock in Rio's 40th anniversary festival.[1] In the picture used for the announcement, Perry is standing in front of a green background, wearing yellow gloves, with exactly six butterflies resting on her arms.[2] This announcement is believed to mark the exact starting point of the 143 era.
On February 13th, 2024, Perry appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she met up with fans in front of the studio. She began hinting new music to them, telling them to "be ready". During the show, Perry was wearing a dress with silver butterfly clips, and also mentioned "leaving space to spread her wings", possibly referencing the album's rumored butterfly theme. During the interview, she made heavy usage of the word "pulse" and also of the phrase "pulse to my own beat", making fans speculated that could be the title of the album's lead single.
On March 6th, 2024, Perry went to the Billboard Women in Music event to hand out the Woman of the Year award. She wore an outfit with a 3D butterfly on her lower back, further teasing the album's theme.[3] The following month, on April 12th, 2024, she posted three photos on her Instagram pictures in front of a mural with KP6 written on it.[4] The next day, Perry appeared on the Breakthrough Prize red carpet holding a bag reading "KP6: TOP SECRET", further teasing the album;[5] she did the same thing during the Witness era when she held an envelope with "KP4: TOP SECRET" written on it while out on the streets.[6] During the May 5th, 2024 episode of American Idol, Perry wore a butterfly themed dress, once again teasing the theme of the next era. She posted photos of the look on social media, captioning it "monarch mama", referring to the monarch butterfly pattern on her nails.[7]
On May 6th, 2024, Perry posted a muted video of herself in the studio, captioned "couldn't make it to the MET, had to work", signaling that the album was still in the works.[8] On May 19th, 2024, after finishing her final season on American Idol, Perry was asked if it was true that she would be making a comeback. She responded, "Oh, no no no. I'm, I'm going to have another baby... the baby's name is KPSEX." The same day, she also shared a video of herself holding up "1", "4", and "3" with her fingers, spelling "143"; the video also featured butterflies floating in the background.[9] Three days later, she changed her profile picture on social media to a metallic "KP" logo with an orange background, at exactly 1:43 AM PT. She also removed her bio on Instagram and Twitter, leaving only her official Linktree listed. The same day, Capitol Music posted a video of the logo spinning around on their Twitter account, with a link to Perry's official website in the caption.[10] Perry also created a broadcast channel on her Instagram account titled "143", in which she shared a voice message at 1:43 PM PT stating, "In case you didn't know, today is the 143rd day of the year. I love you."[11][12]
On June 17th, 2024, Perry announced the lead single for her sixth studio album, "WOMAN'S WORLD". The track was released on July 11th, 2024, with a music video to follow that same day.[13] Two days later, Rolling Stone confirmed that Perry would be working with producers Dr. Luke, Max Martin, and Stargate once again, alongside songwriter Sarah Hudson. The album also features collaborations with new producers Vaughn Oliver and Rocco Valdes, and songwriter Theron Thomas.[14]
On July 10th, 2024, The singer unveiled the cover artwork, title and release date of 143 via her web store. 143 is scheduled to be released in a purple vinyl with alternative cover, silver vinyl and cassette. On same day, she made a live on her social media and played snippets 3 songs "I'M HIS, HE'S MINE" featuring Doechii which samples "Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee)" by Crystal Waters, "GIMME GIMME" featuring 21 Savage and "NIRVANA".[15][16][17]
On July 29th, 2024, Perry announced the second single of the album would be "LIFETIMES" on all her social medias. The song was released on August 9th, 2024. [18]
On September 9th, Katy Perry announced on all social media that "I'M HIS, HE'S MINE" ft. Doechii, will be the third single from 143 and released on September 13th, 2024. [19] After the album's release, on September 23rd, a digital expanded edition was released as "I Love You More" with the bonus tracks "NO MORE TEARS FOR NEW YEARS", "I WOKE UP" and the solo version of "GIMME GIMME", this digital version of the album is an exclusive from Katy Perry's shop.[20] On September 27th, another expanded edition was released but instead included 8 live songs performed live from Rock In Rio, this digital version of the album also being an exclusive from Katy Perry's shop.[21]
