Trios first appeared in Michael Jackson: The Experience as "Crews", though, they functioned similarly to Duets. Trios were introduced to the main series as Alternate routines in Just Dance 2014 with On-Stage Mode, however, in Just Dance 2015, Trios debuted as Classic routines. This mode has since appeared in later games.

Trivia
- This was the latest mode to be released, with Duets being released in Just Dance 2, and Quartets being released in Just Dance 3.
- On the PS Vita/Nintendo 3DS/iOS versions of Michael Jackson: The Experience, some maps have holograms of backup dancers, resembling a Trio map.
- This can be seen in Smooth Criminal and Black Or White.
- The Wii/PS3 version of Black or White is the first Trio to end with five dancers, making it also the first routine in the Just Dance franchise to have more than four dancers.
- When selecting dancers, the lead dancer will have two spots available and the backup dancers will each have one spot available. Starting with the 8th-Gen version of Just Dance 2016, all three dancers can each hold the maximum possible players.
- This is also the case with the PC version of Just Dance 2017.
- Including alternate routines and Mashups, Just Dance 2016 has the most Trios out of all games, with eleven.
- If Just Dance Unlimited is included, Just Dance 2021 has the most Trios, having thirteen.
- For several Trios, the lead dancer and the backup dancers are recorded separately. Examples of this include The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?), Dark Horse, Born This Way, DADDY, Hey Mama, PoPiPo, and Bang Bang Bang.
- There are also times where the lead dancers of such Trios appear as solo dancers in Mashups and Party Master Modes.
