History

Hori had always dreamed of being an entertainer from a young age, so she tried out for the 6th HoriPro Talent Scout Caravan contest and won. Although most of her family did not approve of her entering the industry, her grandfather strongly supported it, so they eventually allowed it. She made her debut as an idol singer in 1982. The following year she began an acting career and soon was typecast into a "bullied but kindhearted" character in most of her roles, which helped to boost her popularity.

In early 1987 she was hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis. While receiving treatment the media began to circulate rumors of the reasoning behind her sudden hospitalization, claiming that she was suffering from an eating disorder or that an affair she was allegedly having with married producer Goto Tsugutoshi was broken off. When she was discharged from the hospital, the media harassment became too much and she decided to retire from entertainment in March.

She resumed her entertainment career two years later in 1989 as an actress and talento. She resumed her singing career in 2001. Around the same time she joined the group Cutie☆Mommy.

In February 2019 she was diagnosed with stage 4 oral cancer that had spread to her tongue and lymph nodes in her neck. She underwent surgery that same month that removed 60% of her tongue. One month later it was discovered that the cancer had also spread to her esophagus, but it was found in a very early stage and was able to be safely removed.

After years of speech therapy and singing lessons, Hori resumed her singing career in 2024.

  • She has been married three times, all to individuals outside of the industry. She was married to her first husband from 1989 to 1999, her second husband from 2000 to 2010, and her third husband from 2011 to the present.
    • She has five biological children (three sons with her first husband, one son and one daughter with her second husband) and two adopted step-children (her third husband's children from a previous marriage.)
  • She has two younger sisters.
  • Her favorite idol before her debut was Ishino Mako.
