— Chara, Part 39
|
Chara is a major character in Inverted Fate. A passenger within Frisk's body, they narrate their partner's every action. As the story progresses, Chara opens up to Frisk and begins talking to them on a more personal level rather than just as a distant narrator.
Profile
Appearance
Before their death, Chara was a short, scrawny kid, with an uncanny resemblance to Frisk. They had the same messy, brown hair down to their shoulders, the same physical build, and very similar fashion choices. However, they were not Frisk's mirror image. Their skin was lighter, their eyes were typically open, and their cheeks had a permanent pink blush. Chara typically wore a green sweater with a single, yellow stripe over the chest and arms, along with tan pants (as interpreted in official art) and brown boots.
After their SOUL's remains amalgamted with Frisk's, Chara became a mere a voice in Frisk's head. Nobody can see them, though they can be heard by other ghosts and Frisk. However, during the CORE-arc, they gained a talksprite and a visible ghost-form, which looks like a transparent version of what they looked like before death. They also feel every physical sensation that Frisk feels, and have been able to take control of them a few times, though they try to limit it.
When Frisk and Chara's combined SOUL is split by Mad Mew Mew, Chara gains a temporary "SOUL-projection" form, appearing similar to how they looked while they were alive, except shaded in red. Chara also retain this form after Flowey forcibly pulls apart the SOUL's two halves and spearates Frisk and Chara, until their original body was recreated at the hands of Asriel Dreemurr at the end of Part 61, restoring them to their original form.
Personality
Chara is cynical, sarcastic and pretentious. They remember the original timeline in its entirety, and have only become more bitter now that they know Flowey's true identity.
Chara had a deep hatred humanity from the loveless life they lived on the surface. They despised Frisk at first, but after they discovered that anything that hurt Frisk would hurt them too, they reluctantly started to guide Frisk through the Underground. Over time, they grew attached to Frisk, slowly opening up to them and talking to them directly instead of just being a distant narrator to them. Their negative views on humanity slowly changed as they got more attached to Frisk, as they describe them as “proof there is good in humanity” during Part 61.
Chara feels extremely guilty for pushing Asriel into their plan to kill 6 humans, getting them both killed and tearing the Royal Family apart, and as a result they have a very low image of themself. During the New Home & Loose Ends Arc, Chara is disturbed by Mettaton's unreleased film defending Chara’s actions in the past, and when Mettaton reveals the statue of them, they immediately possess Frisk to state they don’t deserve defence, even if it meant revealing themself to PAPYRUS and Mettaton.(Or, they didn’t stop to think that they’d reveal themself.) They get further uncomfortable when Mettaton defends them in public after his performance.
History
Chara was born in the 21st century. They were an illegitimate child; the result of an affair between two wealthy elites who kept them only out of obligation. They lived a loveless life, told time and time again that their mere existence was a mistake and only gave gifts to Chara to shut them up. At the age of 10, they fled from home, never to return. Not caring what would become of them, they wandered to Mt. Ebott, where they were the first human to fall into the Underground.
Though injured, they survived their fall. Eventually, they were found by Prince Asriel, who helped them onto their feet. Asriel asked for the child's name, prompting them to discard their birth name and adopt the name 'Chara'. Not long after, they passed out and were taken to the Royal Family's Castle.
Initially, they were overwhelmed by the Royal Family's kindness, but was soon happily accepted and loved. During their time together, Asriel and Chara had heart lockets for one another to symbolize their status as best friends. However, tragedies began to occur over time, and sources of who was to blame for it had been mixed between the original Undertale, claims from Undyne and Toriel, and from Chara themselves.
The main knowledge is that Asgore fell sick one day after Chara and Asriel put buttercups into a pie instead of cups of butter. While Asriel and Toriel were both upset over it, Chara laughed it off.
