Gyokuto

Gyokuto (玉兎) is Miroku and Sango's daughter, the twin sister of Kin'u and the elder sister of Hisui.

History

Gyokuto, along with her twin sister Kin'u, were born in a house at Kaede's village.

Inside Miroku and Sango's house, Kaede and Rin have successfully delivered Hisui. Miroku returns, wondering if the child was born; Sango invites him to hold his new son as Kin'u and Gyokuto look at their new sibling.

That night, Sango asks Miroku how he thinks Kagome was doing, wondering if she made it back to her world on the other side of the well. Kin'u sleeps next to Gyokuto and Hisui as Miroku tends to them,

The next day, Miroku and Sango are hanging their laundry out to dry as the Kin'u and Gyokuto play with Inuyasha's ear; Shippō laughs that he's been reduced to the twins toy. Annoyed, Inuyasha asks their parents to do something, but the girls don't listen to Miroku while Sango apologizes for their daughters' behavior. Catching a scent, Inuyasha picks up the twins and tosses them on Shippō, telling them to "go slay the fox." Both happily pin him to the ground. Shippō yells that he didn't sign up for this. At the Bone-Eater's Well, Miroku, Sango and Shippō arrive soon afterwards with Hisui and Gyokuto, happily surprised to see Kagome again. Kagome greets her friends.

At their house, Miroku and Sango take care of Gyokuto, Kin'u, and Hisui.

Six months later, Sango is washing clothes as Hisui is on her back. Gyokuto and Kin'u were playing in the field. Kagome approaches with a basket of herbs as she calls out to Sango, greets her with a hello. Gyokuto and Kin'u realized it's Kagome before they go towards her and show them what they've picked. Kagome asks Gyokuto and Kin'u what do they have. Kin'u and Gyokuto tell Kagome they dug up lots and lots of plants. Kagome tells Gyokuto and Kin'u that those are kudzu roots and if they dry them they make good medicine. Gyokuto and Kin'u become interested. Kagome remembers something before she takes out a plant and tells Gyokuto and Kin'u that she'll give them this. Gyokuto and Kin'u ask Kagome what is that. Kagome tells Gyokuto and Kin'u it is a Kikyō root. Sango becomes concerned. Gyokuto and Kin'u asks Kagome what is a Kikyō root. Kagome tells Gyokuto and Kin'u the Kikyō is a very kind plant and it helps with coughs and fevers. Gyokuto and Kin'u were disappointed as they wished it was a snack instead. Sango finishes washing clothes as she walks towards Kagome, Gyokuto, and Kin'u. Kagome sees Sango walking towards them and questions about food. Sango tells Gyokuto and Kin'u to come on and to not give Kagome such a hard time. Gyokuto and Kin'u comply. Kagome laughs.

Later, Sango, Kagome, Gyokuto, and Kin'u walk back home as Gyokuto and Kin'u are holding onto Kagome. Sango questions Kagome about the 7 autumnal flowers. Kagome confirms it as it's from the Manyoshu by the poet Yamanoue something or other. Hisui starts crying. Sango tries to comfort Hisui. Gyokuto and Kin'u tell Hisui not to cry. Kagome apologizes to Hisui. Yotsume secretly watches them from a tree. Kagome tells Sango that she knows that she's said this before but Kin'u, Gyokuto, and Hisui all have very unique names. Sango tells Kagome it was Miroku's choice.

In Miroku and Sango's hut, Kin'u and Gyokuto are playing with Shippō, who isn't enjoying it. Shippō tells Kin'u and Gyokuto to stop it, but then Root Head has come so Shippō has to protect the kids as Sango put baby Hisui down next him as she threw the Hiraikotsu at it.

Kohaku helped Miroku fight off some of the root head's body then quickly headed to the house where his sister, nieces, nephew and Rin were. With Sesshōmaru guarding them on top of the house, Kohaku is asked by his sister to babysit her six month old son while she goes to fight.

Not much is known about Gyokuto’s childhood/teenage years because the anime only shows her briefly as a child alongside Kin'u when Rin is giving birth to Towa and Setsuna on the night of the lunar eclipse.

Years later, Gyokuto (now a young adult) lived with her mother in her old demon slayer village and visits her father who was being targeted by a powerful demon that consumes monks and priests.^[2]

Personality

Gyokuto treated Inuyasha just like Kagome did when she first met him, calling him "Doggy" and petting his ears. As usual, Inuyasha was annoyed by this as he did not like his ears being touched by anyone. Gyokuto acted like most toddlers would, seeing as how she was curious and still so young. She and her sister were also fond of roughhousing with Shippō, an act Inuyasha refers to as "slaying the fox."

As a young adult, Gyokuto is shown to be very kind, understanding and non-judgmental. Gyokuto seems to understand their father's reasoning for his training and tries to help Hisui reconcile with him, knowing Hisui perceives their father as a coward. Gyokuto is also seen being more gentle, calm, polite and well-mannered. Also, along with Kin'u, Gyokuto still enjoys playing with Shippō, much to his chagrin.

Physical description

Gyokuto bares a striking resemblance to her mother as her twin sister as she has short dark brown hair with short bangs, bright brown eyes, and fair skin. In her childhood, she had her hair tied up into a small ponytail by a white ribbon, and wore a pink kimono with yellow bows and a rose-colored sash and later brown woven sandals.

As a young adult, Gyokuto wears a larger version of the kimono that she wore when she was younger with a dark pink mo-bakama tied by a simple bow at her back. She maintains the hairstyle and sandals from her childhood.

Powers & Abilities

Gyokuto has mostly followed in her mother, Sango's, footsteps, having trained as a 'Taijiya' (退治屋; lit. a "Yōkai Exterminator".

• Poison Powder: She uses the poison powder to take down the Takonyudo and later various demons.

Trivia

• Gyokuto's name was not revealed in the manga.
• Gyokuto and her twin sister Kin'u are collectively called "KinGyo" (きんぎょ) by their parents and close friends.^[3][4]
• Her name 玉兎 translates to "Jade Hare." Miroku may have named them according to the Chinese idiom "金烏西墜，玉兔東昇" – the golden crow of the sun sets in the west, the jade hare of the moon rises in the east.^[5] The idiom originates from a phrase in an ancient text.^[6]
• In an interview in the May 2021 issue of Animage Magazine, it is revealed that Gyokuto aids her mother in creating and delivering Demon Slayer tools, as well as taking requests and collecting information on demon sightings.^{[citation needed]}
