Ennui

Ennui. It's what you would call.. "the boredom."
―Ennui

Ennui is a character and one of the new four emotions in Inside Out 2. She is Riley Andersen's ennui. Ennui means "boredom" in French.

History

Inside Out 2

She is a new emotion, just like Anxiety, Embarrassment and Envy. She first appeared taking control of the console with an app on her phone, allowing her to perform actions from her couch.

Ennui later went with Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment to the Belief System, where Anxiety was planning to rebuild Riley's entire Sense Of Self.

When Riley struggled while hanging out with the older girls at hockey camp, Ennui pointed out that they were walking again while Riley was lost in thought. She also suggested that Riley put her hands in her pockets when she struggled with what to do with her hands.

After Riley told the other girls that she liked Get Up and Glow and then realized that wasn't a popular choice, Ennui had her pretend she was being sarcastic when she said she liked them. These actions opened the Sar-chasm in Riley's mind.

Anxiety woke Ennui when Riley was unexpectedly sad even though Sadness wasn't touching the console. She realized Sadness had taken and was using Ennui's phone. When Ennui realized her phone was missing, she began looking for it frantically. Then she helped Anxiety look for Sadness to take the phone back.

When Riley started to have a panic attack during a hockey scrimmage, Ennui worked with the other emotions to try to remove her new Anxiety-fueled Sense of Self. They were unable to do this until Anxiety gave up control of the console. They replaced it with her old Sense of Self and then with a new, improved Sense of Self, which allowed Riley to come down and rejoin the game.

Upon Riley's return home, Mom asked her how camp was. Ennui stepped in and had Riley nonchalantly say that it was fine.

Personality

Throughout the movie, Ennui stays lying on the couch on her phone. Unlike Envy, she doesn't care about the plan and only steps up when she thinks that they need her. She also has a deep interest towards her phone, becoming uncharacteristically fast and loud when she loses it. She speaks with a French accent.

Notes and Trivia

  • Ennui is the first emotion to use the console without touching it.
  • Her voice actress, Adèle Exarchopoulos, reprised her role in the European French dub of Inside Out 2.[source?]
  • Ennui was originally supposed to be in the first movie, but it was scrapped at that point.[1]
