Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, the book whose characters came to life. But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young
Distraught, Farid goes in search of Meggie, and before long, both are caught inside the book, too. But the story is threatening to evolve in ways neither of them could ever have imagined.[2]
Dedication
“
To Brendan Fraser, whose voice is the heart of this book. Thanks for inspiration and enchantment. Mo wouldn't have stepped into my writting room without you, and this story would never have been told.
And of course, as almost always, last but for sure not least, for Anna, wonderful, wonderful Anna, who had this story told to her many walks, encouraged and advised me, and let me know what was good and what could still be improved. (I very much hope that the story of Meggie and Farid has its fair share of the book now?)
After countless failures, Dustfinger and Farid tracks down yet another Silvertongue, Orpheus, in the hopes of reading Dustfinger back into the Inkworld with the additional request that Farid tags along. Orpheus claims that Inkheart has been his favorite book as a child and that he practically loves Dustfinger, and is certainly glad to read him back to where he is from.

However, Orpheus doesn't read in Farid and is revealed to be working with another person from Inkworld - Basta. Orpheus ends up reading out a jungle cat from the book that serves as a distraction for Farid. Orpheus has the last copy of the book with him, but Farid is quick enough to grab the piece of paper Orpheus has been reading from before his escape.
Farid runs all the way to Elinor's house (where everyone is currently staying, including Teresa Folchart and Darius), and tells everyone what has just happened.
Meggie, with Farid, wander into the camp of the strolling players and meets the Black Prince. The Prince takes Meggie and Farid to Fenoglio, the author of Inkheart who has been so eager to explore the world he has created, and has hopped on the chance to be read into the book in exchange of The Shadow during the time Capricorn was at large. Meggie and Fenoglio head to Fenoglio's house, where Fenoglio wants to tell Meggie something.
Capricorn's fortress turns out to be abandoned, for Capricorn and some of his henchmen has been read out of the Inkworld, making Mortola to face the fact that her son is not alive in this world as she has hoped - and ends up shooting Mo in the chest with a rifle. Resa cries out, and Basta is surprised Resa has her voice back.

Ch. 20: Visitors from the Wrong Side of the Forest
Fenoglio recounts to Meggie Folchart that the Inkworld, however, has changed in the previous ten years, and is no longer continuing the way Fenoglio has wanted it to be - Cosimo the Fair was killed by Capricorn's herald Firefox, who, along with those of Capricorn's henchmen who were not read out, joined the Adderhead. The Laughing Prince became the Prince of Sighs after Cosimo's death; Violante, the Adderhead's first daughter, ends up marrying Cosimo and has a son named Jacopo, thus tying both kingdoms together as Jacopo is the heir to both kingdoms.
Fenoglio works as a storyteller in the Inkworld and makes up a character named the Bluejay, a character who is said to be the Adderhead's enemy, who supposedly bears strong resemblance to Mortimer Folchart. Because of this, Mo is hunted by the Adderhead. Meggie uses this to her advantage to save Mo from Death. Mo is kidnapped and taken as someone to be executed by the Adderhead.
Fenoglio, with Meggie Folchart's help, create a double who looks just like Cosimo. Brianna falls in love with "Cosimo", but "Cosimo" is then killed by the same person who killed the original Cosimo - Firefox.
Mo binds a book of Death, and anyone whose name is written in there will be immortal. The only way for that immortal to die is if someone write down Heart Spell Death in the book. The Adderhead releases Mo and all the prisoners in the dungeon, but then sends his men and Basta after them to kill them all. Dustfinger and Farid end up aiding with the powers of fire, but it ends up raining. Mo fights like a killer who has killed since the day he was born, and gains respect. Mo kills many of the Adder's soldiers.

Farid tells Meggie to read and bring Orpheus into the Inkworld, and Meggie does so. Orpheus, however, claims that he'll read Dustfinger back to life later, but now he wants to check out the Inkworld. Orpheus wants Farid to be his servant, and if Farid says no then Orpheus won't read Dustfinger back. Farid then sets off with Orpheus.
