Rachel (died 1800 BC) was the daughter of Laban, the wife of Jacob, and the younger sister of Leah who during the 19th century BC. She first met Jacob as she was bringing water to her father's flock, and Jacob fell in love with her, agreeing to work for Laban for seven years in exchange for Rachel's hand in marriage. However, Laban had Jacob marry his oldest daughter, Leah, and then had Jacob work for another seven years in order to win over Rachel's hand as well. Rachel, who was unable to have children, gave her maid Bilhah as a surrogate to Jacob, but she later gave birth to Joseph, Jacob's favorite child. She died in childbirth with her second son, Benjamin.
