The Balkans is a region of Southern Europe located along the Balkan Mountains. The Balkans include Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria, with Romania (otherwise placed in Eastern Europe), Slovenia (otherwise placed in Central Europe), and Greece (otherwise included in Southern Europe proper) typically being included. Other definitions also list Turkey as apart of the Balkans, otherwise it is placed in Western Asia and Moldova which is otherwise placed in Eastern Europe. The most conservative size of the Balkans coincides with a large population of southern Slavs, while Romania and Greece are inhabited by their own ethnic groups, not of Slavic origin.
