Armenia is a country in the southern Caucasus region of Asia. Armenia is one of the post-Soviet states, gaining independence from the USSR on 23 August 1990. Immediately after independence, Armenia fought a border war with neighboring Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan, and Armenia has constantly been at odds with Azerbaijan due to disputed historical boundaries. Armenia's capital is Yerevan (the former Erebuni, founded by Urartu in 782 BC), and the state's population almost entirely consists of ethnic Armenians, who make up 97.9% of the population. Armenia's population of 2,998,600 (2016) adheres almost entirely to the Miaphysite Armenian Apostolic Church, which is also a common faith among the sizeable Armenian diaspora.
