Ahmose I

Ahmose I

Ahmose I (died 1524 BC) was Pharaoh of Egypt from 1549 to 1524 BC, succeeding Kamose and Khamudi and preceding Amenhotep I.

Biography

Ahmose was the son of Seqenenre Tao and Ahhotep I, and he ascended the throne while he was still a child; his mother served as regent and consolidated his power base in Thebes, while his father was killed in battle with the Hyksos. During the 11th year of Khamudi's reign, he began to reconquer Lower Egypt from the Hyksos, conquering Heliopolis, Tjaru, and Avaris. After a three-year siege, Ahmose conquered the last Hyksos stronghold of Sharuhen in Gaza, ending the Hyksos threat. After defeating the Hyksos, he campaigned in Syria and Nubia, reaching as far at Djahy in the Levant and crushing Tetian's uprising in Nubia before establishing Buhen as the new administrative center in Nubia. He died in 1524 BC.
