Historica

Alesia

Hello, and welcome to "Historica Wiki," Fandom's largest history and historical-fiction wiki! This collaborative community of history buffs has a common goal of retelling history through its pop-culture depictions, whether it's articles about how Ancient Greece is portrayed in Assassin's Creed, how the Napoleonic Wars are represented in Napoleon: Total War, or about how Call of Duty retold authentic stories of World War II heroism through memorable fictional characters. This wiki does include plenty of articles about factual history and current events to provide context for its historical fiction articles, all of which aim to reflect reality through a fictional lens. As mentioned below, this wiki occasionally touches on controversial and sensitive historical and contemporary events and figures, but only with a great deal of caution, respect, and care.

Disclaimer

This website is not Wikipedia, and is not purely factual. What Wikipedia can't do, however, is put names and faces on the thousands of nameless Roman soldiers who perished at the Battle of Cannae, the millions of Chinese footsoldiers whose names were not recorded in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the common people who roamed the streets of French Revolution-era Paris, and many other everyday stories lost to history. Historians may never truly know how many battles were fought between Ancient Egypt and the Sea Peoples, how many cities were lost to time or war, and how many small skirmishes and battles accompanied the great triumphs that made it into our history books. Through films, video games, television shows, novels, and other forms of media, these bygone worlds, events, and people are brought back to life, and their stories are retold. This wiki is a compendium of these pop-culture depictions, a passion project of history buffs who can express their love for history through the telling of well-researched, authentic stories about real or semi-fictional people and events.

Rules

Coexist

Please adhere to the following rules:

  1. Please do not add poorly-made (i.e. poor grammar, no links, copy/pasted Wikipedia articles, one-sentence long) pages to this wiki. I am only one person, and I cannot fix all of these mistakes myself.
  2. Please do not create pages overrun with political commentary. This wiki is a project, not a poster.
  3. Please do not come on this wiki with bad intentions.
  4. Please do not be racist on this wiki. Racism is not something that the internet should tolerate, and this wiki is not a website that will ever see insults against people of different nationalities, races, ethnicities, religions, or creeds.
  5. Do not be vulgar on this wiki. Curses or insults are not allowed unless they are contained within a quote said by a historical figure, and these quotes must only be added when necessary. This also ties in with the wiki's anti-racism policy - refrain from using explicit quotes whenever possible, and treat the wiki as a textbook (hopefully, without the graffiti and vandalism).
  6. If you make an article, be sure that you have knowledge of what you are writing about. For instance, do not say that a Roman person went to the United States and spoke with Aristotle there. Write as if you were writing on Wikipedia or writing a professional history essay, and try to use good grammar with these articles. It would be great if you can add images to the wiki, but images are not always available.
  7. Please do not add any explicit/graphic content to the wiki. As this is a wiki which includes images from across history, this wiki may, at times, include artistic nudity (as per the Community Guidelines) such as classical paintings, non-sexual/cultural nudity, or, if it fits neither of these descriptions, it must be appropriately censored. DISCLAIMER: No images on this wiki are meant to be pornographic, sexual, or otherwise controversial. Please refer to the Community Guidelines when uploading an image which may be controversial.
  8. Please do not hesitate to ask me any Wiki-related questions, as I am always here to answer them. Please be patient; I may occasionally need a few days before I can respond!

Fair use of scholarly and pop culture content

This wiki - as provided for by Fandom's "fair use" policies - makes use of several secondary sources to provide it with historical, scholarly, and educational content. Without these sources, none of these pages would have been possible. Works which are regularly consulted include:

  • David, Saul. War: from Ancient Egypt to Iraq. Dorling Kindersley, 2009.
  • Grant, R. G. Commanders. Dorling Kindersley, 2011.
  • Palmowski, Jan. A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century World History. Oxford University Press, 1998.
  • Wikipedia
  • Kings and Generals on Youtube

In addition to utilizing materials from scholarly/reliable sources, this wiki also includes historical or real world-themed content from several non-scholarly works such as:

  • The Total War series
  • Assassin's Creed series
  • Grand Theft Auto series
  • The Godfather films
  • Call of Duty series

These lists can never fully be complete, as this wiki encompasses a broad variety of historical and historical-themed subjects, and there are countless sources to draw upon. It is thanks to the world's wealth of scholars, historical content, and historical fiction content that this wiki is able to operate, and most of this wiki's content's credit goes to them for their contributions to historical knowledge. With that said, please enjoy this wiki, the ultimate melting-pot of history, historical fandom, and historical fiction!

Political and personal biases

This wiki, while often dealing with current and historical politics, does not and cannot assume a partisan political stance. While we do include political affiliations in our biographical articles, this information is based solely on publicly available information, public statements, and historical records. We do not conjecture that someone is "socialist" or "fascist" because they hold progressive or socially conservative political views; instead, we reserve political categorizations for people who have identified with a political movement or party, who champion specific social causes, or who self-identify with a label. For example, we categorize progressive Democrats as "social democrats" due to scholarly research linking the two ideologies; while we reserve the term "fascism" for supporters of the original fascist movements, neo-Nazis, modern-day white nationalists, and supporters of far-right, anti-establishment ideologies and do not apply the label to center-right and pro-democracy conservatives. Likewise, we reserve the term "terrorist" for violent non-state actors internationally or historically recognized as terror groups, including the Tamil Tigers, al-Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIL, the Ku Klux Klan, and more. This wiki does not assume a partisan stance on geopolitical uncertainties like Israel-Palestine, Kosovo-Serbia, Russia-Ukraine, etc., but uses factual information and reliable sources to portray ongoing geopoplitical conflicts with due nuance.

This wiki does not tolerate racism or engage in the spreading of harmful stereotypes. Though this wiki may include content on real and fictitious Black, Italian, and Hispanic gangsters (among others), it also includes content on the brave Black soldiers who fought against Nazism with the 92nd Infantry Division, Italian Resistance soldiers who battled fascism in the Dodecanese, and Mexican revolutionaries who fought against Porfirio Diaz's dictatorship. Though this wiki may include content on Islamist terrorism, it also celebrates the cultural achievements of Islamic rulers like Saladin as manifested through beautiful mosques and citadels. Though this wiki may include content on German Nazis, it also includes articles about the abolitionist Forty-Eighters who fought for the Union during the Civil War. And, though it might have plenty of content on right-wingers and far-rightists who have committed despicable deeds, this wiki is unafraid to call out the far-left for equally despicable deeds. This wiki treats every historical subject with due respect and nuance.

Handling historical and contemporary topics

Rwandan Genocide refugees

This wiki does touch on historical and contemporary topics that may be deemed sensitive. In order to ensure that these topics are accurately portrayed, articles about sensitive events like the Israel-Hamas War, 9/11, the Holocaust, and the Rwandan Genocide should only include factual content or fictional content made with great care to avoid offense. For this reason, this wiki will include biographies about fictitious or fictionalized characters from works like Schindler's List that respect the sensitive topics and approach them with due caution.

When writing about controversial real-world politicians, political parties, or other political content, this wiki will approach these topics with a similar sensitivity, relying only on scholarly resources to make judgments. For example, the term "fascist" will only be applied when reputable scholars agree that such a term can be applied to a politician or political movement - many reliable fascism scholars and former Trump allies posit that Trumpism is an American version of fascism. However, reputable scholars and legal authorities argue that, while Nigel Farage is certainly a right-wing populist, he cannot be regarded as "fascist", so this wiki will not refer to the Brexit Party as "fascist."

This wiki regularly consults the news for coverage of current and unfolding events. For instance, as the Syrian Civil War plays a massive role in modern pop culture - not limited to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Insurgency: Sandstorm - this wiki regularly uploads content related to real events. While this wiki does have a special focus on historical fiction, it is important that we include factual content to provide context for our historical fiction. For that reason, this wiki will incorporate articles about current events, no matter how controversial. To cover topics like the War on Terror, we will write about both fictitious depictions of that (and any) war and real, breaking stories about that (and any) conflict.

Creating fictional content about controversial topics

Simulacrum

That being said, sensitive current and historical events are portrayed in fiction all the time, from the War on Terror's depiction in The Hurt Locker and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict's depiction in Fauda to the Donbas War in the 2018 film Donbass and World War II in games and series like Call of Duty, Enlisted, Easy Red II, and more. When we create fictional content related to factual events on this wiki, we create a simulacrum with each article - a realistic, yet ultimately fictional simulation of a real person, place, or event. For that reason, there are thousands of articles about fictitious American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and War on Terror combatants, as this wiki puts faces and names to the thousands of soldiers whom history has rendered faceless and nameless through omission or classification. These articles are meant to portray reality through authentic fiction. Articles about the fictitious Vagos and Ballas put faces and names to the problem of gang violence in the United States. Articles about fictitious Allied and Axis World War II soldiers authentically portray millions of forgotten souls who fought in the worst war in the history of the world. Articles about fictitious al-Qaeda, Taliban, and ISIL militants in the War on Terror tell miniature stories of the purposefully ostracized, forgotten, and nameless participants in a "forever war" that has claimed hundreds of thousands of equally forgotten lives. Content published to this wiki is meant to respect and authentically portray factual history and not to mislead, misinform, or offend any readers.
