Lithuania

Lithuania (リトアニア, Ritoania) is a supporting character in the series Hetalia. He is the personification of Lithuania.

In 2007, Himaruya gave out human names to some of the characters and he received the name Toris Laurinaitis (トーリス・ロリナイティス, Tōrisu Rorinaitisu).

Appearance

He has wavy,[Note 6] shoulder-length brown hair and green eyes (blue in earlier media). His signature outfit is a green military uniform, but throughout the comics and anime he can also be seen donning many different historical outfits, especially during medieval times. He sometimes wears his hair tied back into a ponytail.

He's the tallest of the Baltics, being nearly on par with Estonia.

In the strip While You Were Gone[5], Lithuania is shown to have deep scars covering his back. Although it has never been confirmed how and when exactly he got them, fanon largely speculates that Russia is the perpetrator.

Personality and Interests

Lithuania is the eldest of the three Baltics.[6] He is introverted, serious and perseverant, but is also described as an overthinker. Those traits make him prone to stress, which in turn triggers his stomachaches. A bio from Hetalia and His Merry Friends (Volume 3)[7] describes him as "more serious than Germany and worse at understanding jokes". He was often bossed around by Poland, but he shows patience and resilience even in the face of hardships.

Lithuania is said to be interested in martial arts and literature, and drives a second-hand car.[6] The strip Checkmating Poland[8] also shows a liking for chess, which he shares with Poland despite the latter's tendency to cheat his way to victory.

Biography

Like many other Nations, Lithuania doesn't remember a lot about his early childhood. In World☆Stars Chapter 510,[9] he, Estonia and Latvia discuss the 2020s rising trend of bringing back paganism. Inspired by what humans have been up to, they get excited about the idea of reconnecting with their pre-Christianity roots, and try setting up a Midsummer[Note 7] folk festival. It proves to be a success for Estonia and Latvia, but Lithuania finds it a rather unsettling experience.

Middle Ages

The earliest we see Lithuania in his history is when he was a Grand Duchy after being unified as such by Mindaugas (Episode 92 adapting Eastern Europe While Totally Being Pushed Around by Poland![10]), during which time he was under the looming threat of stronger entities like the Golden Horde and the Teutonic Knights, of which a young Prussia was part. Prussia's relentless attempts to convert Lithuania to Christianity is what sparked the feeling of strong resentment Lithuania still holds against Prussia in modern times (more info in their relationship section).

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

As a teen, he was told by his boss (at the time Grand Duke Jogaila) that an alliance with another nation should be considered, given that Lithuania struggles to keep the Teutonic Knights at bay by himself. Jogaila and Lithuania arrange a visit to the neighboring Kingdom of Poland, where they are awaited by Queen Jadwiga and a very anxious Poland. Jogaila later goes on to marry Jadwiga, sealing the Union of Krewo, and Lithuania winds up being a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This marriage also marks Lithuania's effective conversion to Christianity. These events make up Episode 95, which adapts The First Time the Poland Rule Was Used![11]

Together with Poland, he became an Eastern European superpower during the Middle Ages and despite being bossed around by Poland most of the time, the two developped a sense of partnership. In The Ruler of Scandinavia and the King of Eastern Europe (adapting the strip of the same name[12]), Finland gives Sweden a rundown of what he witnessed during the Battle of Grunwald. He notes that despite Poland's undeniable strength, the usually harmless-looking Lithuania is the one they should really watch out for. He shows exceptional leadership skills towards his soldiers, as well as excellent strategizing. By feigning a retreat, Lithuania was able to outsmart Prussia and strike back just in time to save Poland. After listening to Finland's musings, Sweden gives everyone the order to retreat despite being face to face with their enemy, leaving Lithuania and Poland with no one to fight against.

In Episode 70 adapting the events of The Violent Mr. Sve of Northern Europe Takes a Swing,[13] Lithuania and Poland meet Finland and Sweden, the latter being interested in taking Estonia and Latvia (part of the Commonwealth's territory at the time) with him. Upset by the request, Poland petulantly denies Sweden at first, but eventually succumbs to his intimidating glare and cowers behind Lithuania, who looks helpless. This serves as a very rough summary of the real-world Livonian War as well as part of the Polish-Swedish Wars.

Other content from this time period includes What Happened After Tannenburg[14] (follow-up to the Battle of Grunwald), The Legend of the Iron Wolf[15] (also in Episode 96), Lietuvis!![16] (flashback) as well as an annoted doodle from Lithuania’s Out-Sourcing Part 2.[17]

Lithuania and Poland's defeat in a series of wars[Note 8] at the end of the 18th century lead to the Partitions of Poland (events shown in Episode 57 adapting the flashback from Pact of Steel[4]), destroying the Commonwealth for good. Defeated, Lithuania is forcefully taken away to live with Russia where he becomes his subordinate along with Estonia and Latvia. More than a century later, he bears witness to Russia's mental breakdown that escalates into Bloody Sunday (shown in About the Fact That Russia’s History is Too Scary[18]).

Soviet Union

After the events of World War I, Lithuania gains independence and moves to America[Note 9] to work as a housekeeper, given the dire state of his country and economy. The strips Lithuania's Out-Sourcing part 1[19] and 2,[17] Cleaning out the Storage[20] as well as Episode 17 and Episode 20 follow him in this new chapter of his life. However, when the Great Depression comes around, Russia returns once again to take Lithuania home with him (events from Lithuania’s Out-Sourcing Part 3 (The Great Depression)[21]), reuniting him with the two other Baltics, Belarus, Ukraine and Prussia and Moldova under the Soviet Union.[Note 10]

Lithuania's time in the USSR is only shown through bits and pieces scattered throughout the comic, the only main storyline strip being Pact of Steel[4] (featured in Episode 56 and Episode 57). As the beginnings of World War II are set in motion, Lithuania overhears a conversation between Russia and his boss about invading Poland. Worried, he decides to give Poland a phone call to warn him about Russia's intentions. After one unsuccessful call Poland eventually picks up, but he doesn't take Lithuania's words seriously, making up all sorts of crazy plans to defeat or escape the enemy.

When Lithuania calls him once more some time later to try and reason with him, Poland states that he's already taken action against Russia. Lithuania's initial relief is short-lived, as distressed screams from Russia leads Lithuania to find out Poland's plan was to send a chain letter, threatening to make Russia's capital Warsaw if he doesn't send the letter to three other people within three days. Despite Russia's panic upon reading the letter (and Poland's confidence in the fact that Russia has no friends and thus cannot escape the threat), Lithuania points out that although Russia may not have many friends, but he has plenty of underlings.

As Russia's subordinates, he and the other Baltics are tasked with many chores, most of which are housekeeping (only Lithuania seems to have the extra task of handling paperwork,[22][23] something his Hetalia☆Collezione profile says he enjoys doing). They are mostly seen preparing meals (Episode 29 adapting), doing laundry, or helping Russia with his diplomatic endeavors, which sometimes strains their personal life. In Episode 37 (adapting part of Pact of Steel[4] and foreshadowing the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact), Lithuania initially declines Russia's suggestion that he comes along on his diplomatic visit to Germany, stating that not only does he find Germany scary, but he also has a date planned with Belarus that day. Russia however is having none of it, informing all three Baltics that they are to come with him on an earlier train to Siberia. Even tho all of them were hoping to have some time away from Russia, they're too frightened to disobey him.

In a bio from Volume 2,[24] he states that his time in the USSR felt like "waking up to a strange theme park under construction".

Modern Era

After the Soviet Union fell, he fully regained his independence and got help from Poland to settle into his post-Soviet life (as described in Lithuania's Volume 2[24] bio). The two of them started hanging out with each other again after spending almost 70 years apart, though that quickly lead them to discover how much either of them changed (best example being While You Were Gone[5]). For more information, see their relationship section.

In the present day, Lithuania has been catching up with people he lost touch with during Soviet times, and has also been strenghtening his bond with Estonia and Latvia to keep a sense of togetherness as the Baltic Trio after gaining their independence for good.

Relationships

America

Main article: America
Lithuania and America

Due to his economy plummeting after WWI, Lithuania lived with America[Note 9] for a brief period of time and worked for him as his housekeeper (events of the whole Lithuania's Out-Sourcing[19][17][21] series plus Cleaning out the Storage,[20] adapted in Episode 17 and Episode 20).

At first England regularly visited, as he doubted America's ability to treat Lithuania well, but the latter proved to be enjoying his new lifestyle and was well-received both by America himself, but also by the other occupants of the house (America's whale and Tony). England was shocked by the ease with which Lithuania tackled his workload, to which Lithuania reponded that "if you once lived with Poland 24/7 and then got invaded by Russia, you would know".[19]

Tony specifically displayed an odd liking for Lithuania, to the point of repeatedly beaming him up into his spacecraft out of jealousy, should Lithuania spend too much time with the whale.[19] Another instance from Comic Diary Summary Part 6 shows Tony confessing to Lithuania that he would like him to meet his parents, and offers Lithuania to come with him (to the whale's clear annoyance).[25]

After the Great Depression hit, Russia came to take Lithuania back home with him, claiming that America was no longer fit to care for him.[21] Lithuania showed reluctance to leave America, but he ultimately did not have much of a choice.

Even though America was his employer, Lithuania still regarded him with the softness of a more experienced, wiser Nation. He patiently deals with America's anxiety after he just watched a horror movie by accepting to sleep with him, and answers America's many questions about his younger days during the Commonwealth[17] (Lithuania mentally notes that in that aspect, America hasn't changed from when he himself was a child). In Cleaning out the Storage[20] (or Episode 17 and Episode 20), when America sheepishly tells him he might be becoming a sentimental old man after being unable to throw away most of the storage's contents, Lithuania simply replies that he's just becoming an adult.

In the strip Happy Birthday![26] set in the mid-2000s,[Note 11] Lithuania returned to America's house to celebrate his birthday, fulfilling his long-time promise to hang out with him again once the times are brighter.[21]

Belarus

Main article: Belarus
Belarus and Lithuania

Lithuania and Belarus have known each other since childhood, as evidenced by a scrapped strip[27] from Comic Diary Summary Part 11. Adult Lithuania has shown to have a crush on her dating back to the interwar period at least[Note 12] (going by Pact of Steel[4] and Episode 37 where he says to have a date planned with her). A strip from Comic Diary Summary Part 11[28] also shows Lithuania returning home from a (only 3 minutes long) date with Belarus, to Poland's annoyance then shock as he notices that not only are all of Lithuania's fingers broken, but that Belarus is still there actively breaking them further. Lithuania remains oblivious, claiming that he just has the ability to bend his fingers to such extremes.

In Japanese, Lithuania refers to Belarus as Belarus-chan, a cutesy way of adressing her.

Manhandling Lithuania has been a habit of hers since they were young,[27] but she doesn't seem to feel genuine hatred towards him, if the dates she accepted are anything to go by. Aside from physical harm, she doesn't act anymore menacingly towards Lithuania than she does with others (however Lithuania definitely sees her through rose-colored glasses, refusing to acknowledge the way she treats him). In a strip from the Halloween 2013/2014 Event, [29][30] she even offers Lithuania her help to save Poland from Russia's rough cuddling (by substituting herself for Poland).

Many fans tend to speculate that Belarus acted that way because she feels jealous of Lithuania's privileged position in Russia's household, but all interactions quoted above disprove it. Given her general tendency to intimidate others, it is more likely that Lithuania's blinding crush merely makes him an easy target for her. It is also worth noting that in spite of them canonically dating, their relationship status remains a mystery.

Poland

Main article: Poland
Lithuania and Poland B.W. 11-1

Lithuania and Poland's dynamic began as very uneven, due to the latter's selfish and overbearing nature. Lithuania was often bossed around by Poland, who considered him as his lackey and demanded that Lithuania "adjusts to his way of life" (which mostly meant endorsing Poland's religion and language).[Note 13] This is something that Lithuania seems to have forgotten about for a time, as memories suddenly resurface during his phone call to Poland circa WWII (Pact of Steel[4] and Episode 56) causing Lithuania to curse Poland for his past behavior.

In spite of their shaky beginnings, the two eventually developped a sense of partnership during their time together as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In The Legend of the Iron Wolf[15] (adapted in Episode 96), Poland gives Lithuania the nickname Liet (short for Lietuva, the Lithuanian word for Lithuania),[Note 14] and suggests to be called Po himself. However, while Poland still uses Liet in the present day to refer to Lithuania, it seems that Lithuania never used Poland's nickname past the events of The Legend of the Iron Wolf (merely referring to him as Poland). In the English dub, Liet is replaced by Lithy.

In that same strip, despite Poland having questionably listened to Lithuania's story, a Polish guard observing them from afar notes that it'd been a while since Poland had been so happy. This hints that despite his initial rudeness, Poland genuinely enjoys Lithuania's company.

The two were split apart when Russia defeated them in the Kościuszko Uprising (flashback from Pact of Steel[4] and Episode 57), putting an end to the Commonwealth and taking Lithuania away with him. Remaining without any contact for a time, Poland then helps Lithuania build his economy back up during the interwar period (suggested by an annoted doodle from Lithuania’s Out-Sourcing Sequel[31]). For the remainder of Soviet times however they seem to have made occasional contact, judging by the phone calls from Pact of Steel[4] and Lietuvis!![16]

Present day-set strips show them having mended their friendship, even tho Poland remains one of the main sources of Lithuania's near-constant worry. In several strips from the Halloween 2013/2014 Event, Lithuania gets anxious over Poland either not showing up,[29][30] or having been spotted by Latvia crying by himself[32] (because Lithuania is late to the party). Lithuania clearly fears leaving Poland on his own at social events, as he is aware of his debilitating social anxiety.

Similarly, in an arc from World☆Stars, he panics over Poland's safety after Russia plants cardboard cutouts of himself at several Nations' doorstep.[33][34] Thinking that Poland wouldn't be able to sleep for a while if he received the cutout without any context, Lithuania immediately goes to Poland's house[35][36] where he finds him livestreaming video games. Turns out he was aware of the situation and remained calm about it, even upon discovering the creepy setup his own cutout came with. In the same strip, Lithuania recalls a recent time when Poland had to stay over at his place for a while after forgetting his house key at America's.

Overall, their relationship evolved from a very rocky and interest-driven cohabitation into something more genuine, with Lithuania always worrying about Poland's wellbeing while Poland relies on him as an anchor in familiarity. This is reflected in their respective versions of Marukaite Chikyuu, with mirroring verses telling about how much they value each other as well as the fond memories they have of their times together.

Prussia

Main article: Prussia
Lithuania and Prussia W.S. Ep40-1

Because of his unpleasant past encounters with Prussia as the Teutonic Knights, Lithuania holds a stubborn grudge against him that doesn't seem to falter even centuries later.[23] Prussia's forceful attempts at converting Lithuania to Christianity seems to be the only reason for that grudge, even though it is ironic considering he then peacefully converted when allying with Poland against their common enemy.

Still, Lithuania was shown to act in a very cold and even condescending[22] manner around Prussia during their time living together at Russia's mansion, even when Prussia tried helping Lithuania with paperwork in good faith. Prussia never adresses the tension (nor the reason behind it) directly, but he obviously feels hurt by Lithuania's behavior.

In a strip from the Halloween 2013/2014 Event,[29] he pretends to have forgotten Lithuania's and Poland's names (though it's unsure why exactly he did in that specific moment), but still ends up helping Lithuania with finding Poland, further proving that the centuries-old grudge is one-sided.

Russia

Main article: Russia
Lithuania and Russia

The two met for the first time as kids in The Yoke of Tartar[37] (adapted in Episode 89), when Russia was under the Tatars' rule. Lithuania offered that he and Russia become friends, but Russia declined, stating that he "wasn't strong enough yet". He promised to work hard and return later, then ran off through the snowy forest.

Lithuania became Russia's subordinate for the first time after the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, losing to Russia who gets to decide of his fate as the winner. Russia tells Lithuania that he looks smart, and because of that Lithuania will be working for him at his house, separating him from Poland. This first half of Lithuania's life as Russia's underling is marked by the events of Bloody Sunday, which he witnesses firsthand.[18] Lithuania also inevitably yearns for the glorious (but gone) days of the Commonwealth, as evidenced by Lithuania's Out-Sourcing Sequel.[31]

After gaining independence at the end of WWI, Lithuania spent 11 years working at America's house (Lithuania's Out-Sourcing[19][17][21] series), where Russia visited him once. Turns out he wasn't necessarily interested in seeing Lithuania in person, but he did threateningly ask of America to take good care of Lithuania because he "used to be his".[19] When the Great Depression strikes, Lithuania is forcefully taken back under Soviet rule.[21]

Fans commonly speculate that Lithuania was "Russia's favorite", but it was never directly confirmed. While Russia does seem to put more trust in Lithuania (he is the only one shown to assist with paperwork[22] and diplomatic aspects,[4] while Estonia and Latvia are usually left aside), it could be something that happened overtime as Lithuania is described by his fellow Baltics as someone who takes the lead. It could also be because Lithuania is the oldest of the three,[6] and has more experience in the eyes of Russia.

Their relationship is mostly that of a power imbalance, which sometimes escalated into physical harm. Despite the trust he has in Lithuania, Russia's unstable personality has lead to multiple instances of physical abuse and humiliation. Under a doodle from the strip Pact of Steel,[4] Lithuania is said to have been "beaten up by Russia day after day" once he started working as his underling, while a panel from While You Were Gone[5] shows Lithuania reminiscing about one instance of him wearing a maid outfit while Russia ominously stands behind him with a whip in hand. The same strip then reveals the deep scars that run across his back, further hinting at what he could've endured (though the origins of those scars were never confirmed).

In the present-day set World☆Stars Chapter 96: The Baltic States, Tripartite Talk,[38] Lithuania tries to motivate Estonia and Latvia to stick together as the Baltic trio by comparing the situation to when they got their independence from Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, a memory that quickly turns sour as Lithuania's brash attempt at claiming his independence was disapproved of by the others, and met with strong resistance from Russia.

In modern times, Lithuania still feels uneasy when it comes to Russia, although he tries to stand his ground in the face of Russia's intimidation. World☆Stars Chapter 385: From Russia with Love…[39] shows him exhausted after watching Russia's stream in which his name is mentioned right off the bat. He then suggests that he, Estonia and Latvia try to figure out how Russia's antics are gonna affect them, and prepare "counter-measures".

Anime

LithuaniaAnime

Lithuania first makes a cameo in Episode 01, as Russia states that he only wants to see him come running back to him with a troubled face (at which point Poland steps in to defend Lithuania).

He later appears in America's Cleaning of the Storage Part 1 and 2, which marks his formal debut in the anime. He's mainly featured in Baltic-centric episodes such as Episode 29 and Episode 37, and later on in Episode 56, Episode 57, Episode 95 and Episode 96 which focus heavily on him and Poland. Additionally, he makes minor appearances in Episode 89 and Episode 92 (as a child), and in Extra Episode 2.

The most screentime he gets in Hetalia: The Beautiful World is in At Netherlands', showing him and Poland making business with Netherlands, but he also briefly shows up in Our Failure and I Was Overwhelmed by Heroines. Hetalia: The World Twinkle dedicates a whole extra episode to his fight during the Battle of Grunwald, tho he also features in Together with Russia, at the end of The Nordic Five +α and in Surprise Halloween!.

So far, he's only made a couple cameos in Hetalia: World★Stars (anime), being shown in the audience at the World Meeting in The Weirdos・Part 1, as well as Industrial Revolution - Part 2 in which he works at America's house.

His character design was relatively unchanged in the anime adaptation, aside from his green eyes being changed to a shade of blue (before being reverted to green from The Beautiful World onwards).

Name

Since Himaruya never wrote the human names in Latin script, some of them are very difficult to translate accurately and reliable sources of information about Lithuanian names are lacking. Toris would be the most literal way to romanize トーリス, although fanon tends to rather use Tolys. One of the only insights on the subject is that of a tumblr user, who notes that most renderings of his name are acceptable but only as nicknames.

Just like some spellings of his first name, the surnames Laurinaitis and Rolinitis are backed up by anecdotal evidence (as opposed to the non-existent Lorinaitis used by the early fandom). It seems that the inspiration behind the entire human name remains a mystery.

Trivia

  • His birthday corresponds with the date of Lithuania's declaration of independence from Russia, on February 16, 1918, but Lithuania would wind up occupied by both the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany in 1940, then reoccupied by Soviets in 1944. It would become the first Soviet republic to declare its renewed independence on March 11, 1990, although no country would recognize Lithuania's independence for another year.
    • It should be noted that the United States of America never acknowledged Lithuania's incorporation into the Soviet Union, and so recognized Lithuanian independence even when Lithuania was not independent.
  • During the Battle of Grunwald (events of The Ruler of Scandinavia and The King of Eastern Europe[12] and episode of the same name Lithuania and Poland are shown as teenagers, but then appear as young children in a strip from Comic Diary Summary Part 9[47] taking place after the Italian Wars. While those two strips have only been written a couple months apart, the real-world conflicts are separated by almost 150 years, suggesting that Himaruya probably aged them up physically as a retcon.
  • Due to a translation error in Episode 01, the name above Lithuania's flag switched to "Latvia" when Poland stepped in front of him.
  • Similarly, due to a coloring error in Episode 56, Lithuania's hair is blond instead of brown when he appears as a chibi in his flashbacks.
