Wintherins are minor supporting characters in DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 2. They are a species of dragons from Argent D'Nur, who were used as war mounts by the Night Sentinels. They bear white scales, large wings, a head that strangely appears to bear no eyes, instead having four horn-like protrusions, and the ability of breathing plumes of Sentinel Energy flames, capable of vaporizing demons. However, Wintherins corrupted by Hell displayed black and red scales, and only two red horns in place of eyes.

History

Origin and war against Hell

Wintherins arose on Argent D'Nur from the Wraithcall, which created the entire biosphere of Argent D'Nur, eventually culminating in the sapient Argenta. The Argenta tamed the Wintherins by an unknown point in time, but at the very least during the service of the Doom Slayer, an unnamed human marine who was transported across time and space to Argent D'Nur. Tamed Wintherins were assigned to members of the Night Sentinels. At some point in the Doom Slayer's service as a Night Sentinel, he acquired his own Wintherin, who bore his sigil on its forehead. They presumably served in the war between Argent D'Nur and Hell, while the Maykrs, ancient extradimensional aliens who vassalized the Argenta under the guise of gods, began to conspire with the demons to allow the world to be corrupted in exchange for immortality-granting Argent Energy. Likely during the fall of Argent D'Nur, Wintherins were brought to Hell and corrupted into demonic WIntherins, utilized by the Jekkadians in Immora. The Doom Slayer and the Night Sentinels with him were trapped in Hell by the very Argenta Deag Priests they served, who had turned to the side of the Maykrs. However, the Wintherin who served the Slayer remained loyal to him, awaiting his return for thousands of years. It and other non-corrupted Wintherins were likely looked after by the surviving Night Sentinels and free Argenta tribes who escaped the Maykrs' takeover of the world.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 2

Thousands of years later, the Doom Slayer was released from his imprisonment in a demonic sarcophagus, fighting off an invasion of Mars and Earth, and later revived the Dark Lord Davoth in order to destroy him and end Hell's threat forever. Davoth escaped to Immora, and the Slayer returned to Argent D'Nur to gain access to a crystal capable of powering the Gates of Divum, the only slipgate that led to Immora. The Slayer lit the Torch of Kings, declaring his intention to enter the World Spear, the origin of the Elemental Wraiths and the site where the crystal was kept. To avoid a three-day walk from the Torch to the Spear, the Slayer summoned his Wintherin, which immediately arrived to his aid, and rode it to the Nether Lake at the base of the Spear. Upon landing, the Slayer dismounted, and the Wintherin took off. After the Slayer activated the Gate of Divum, the remaining Night Sentinels and free tribes of Argent D'Nur managed to follow him to Immora with all the armaments they have, including Wintherins. As the Night Sentinels gathered, Davoth sent forth his army of Demonic Troopers, demons, and demonic Wintherins, but the Sentinel Wintherins proved superior, burning giant demonic Titans and vaporizing hordes of Imps with their flame breath. After the battle, where the Dark Lord was finally destroyed and Hell's power collapsed on itself, the Wintherins who survived likely returned to Argent D'Nur with the Night Sentinels.
