~ Terra explaining the meaning of life to Kefka Palazzo. |
Terra Branford is the main protagonist of the 1994 role-playing video game Final Fantasy VI.
She is a human-Esper hybrid who is initially introduced as an unwilling servant of the Gestahlian Empire, having been brainwashed and enslaved by Kefka Palazzo to further his own goals. Upon being freed from Kefka's control by Locke Cole, Terra joins a resistance group known as the Returners to fight back against the empire that once oppressed her and regain her lost memories.
She was voiced by Yukari Fukui in the Japanese version, and by Natalie Lander in the English version.
Appearance
Terra has mint green hair, a red dress with a purple sash around her waist, red boots, red wristbands and purple shoulder-pads. Some appearances depicts her having blonde hair instead of green.
Personality
At first Terra is confused, fearful and amnesiac. She is afraid of anyone who wants access to her powers and not fully knowing what those powers are. The few memories she has are disturbing and she is upset by reminders of the way her power was used. This allows her to sympathize with Celes Chere, another former Imperial. As she learns more about herself, Terra becomes assertive and determined and adds her opinions to the discourse or spurs the part. She shows an affinity for children. She is kind and caring towards others and cares for Relm when she is upset by Ultros.

Trivia
- Yoshinori Kitase has stated in an interview that Final Fantasy VI has no official main character, as the developers aimed to give the entire cast equal development and standing without anyone standing above the rest. However, Terra features prominently in much of the game's artwork and is pivotal to its plot; she is present in the game's logo, the game's main theme is named after her, and she was chosen as the heroine to represent Final Fantasy VI in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy. Thus, she is considered the game's central protagonist, which gives her the distinction of being the first female protagonist of a game in the mainstream Final Fantasy series.
