Suko

Is that a Mini-Kong?
~ Bernie Hayes upon seeing Suko.

Suko is a major character in the 2024 sci-fi action crossover film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the fifth installment of the MonsterVerse franchise. He is a juvenile great ape from the Hollow Earth who is a former member of the Skar King's court and an ally of Kong, later becoming his adoptive son.

He was portrayed by Luke Hawker in motion capture.

Appearance

Suko is a juvenile primate-like Titan in his preteens with a general appearance similar to that of Kong. He has gray skin, green eyes, two short legs, two lengthy arms, a skinny but muscular build and a scar over his right eye extending down his right cheek. The coloration of his fur is orangish-brown, similar to that of the Skar King.

Personality

Suko possesses a cunning and opportunistic personality, as demonstrated by his initial attempt to deceive Kong by appearing harmless and then viciously biting his hand when the opportunity arose during the ambush. Although easily defeated by Kong in their fight, Suko's intelligence shines through as he subtly directs Kong's attention to the fleeing ape, signaling that he was not involved in the attack. Despite his initial reluctance, Suko gradually forms a bond with Kong, aided by Kong's acts of goodwill and attempts at friendship.

Suko's survival instincts drive him to accept the food Kong offers, leading to a growing trust between them and similar between a father and son relationship. Over time, Suko becomes fiercely loyal to Kong, warning him against interfering and protecting him from potential threats. When Suko witnesses Kong in trouble, his loyalty is put into action, as he employs his resourcefulness to support Kong and have his back against their enemies.

Suko's character evolves from a deceptive opportunist to a trusted ally, willing to go to great lengths to ensure Kong's safety and well-being.

Biography

Past

Not much is known about Suko's origins beyond the fact that he was born after the Skar King was trapped with the other Great Apes and his slave Shimo in the Hollow Earth following his defeat at the hands of Godzilla. It is also implied that he is one of the many Great Ape children that the Skar King had with the females he has in his lair. Suko never really knew his biological mother, but he knew that the Skar King could have some relation to him as they both have similar fur. Because Skar never took care of him, Suko would befriend an Great Ape named Gnarled Finger, who becomes his caretaker and father figure.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

In 2027, Suko, alongside Skar King and the other Great Apes, was freed due to a sinkhole accidentally being created by Kong as he was hunting a pack of Wart Dogs. Upon being freed, Suko, alongside the Skar King's second-in-command One-Eye and two of his minions, were sent by the Skar King to survey the area. Suko would encounter Kong in a misty cave, and initially intimidated him with his contorted shadow, but the latter ape relaxed when Suko revealed himself. He attempts to give the child a friendly touch, but instead of shaking Kong's hand, Suko aggressively bit his finger and ran off. Kong pursued him until he was confronted and attacked by One-Eye and Skar King's minions. Suko tried to fight Kong alongside them, but after being picked up and used as a flail against the apes as well as being flung across the clearing, he hid instead. When the battle was over, Kong quickly discovered Suko in his hiding place, and offered him one of the fallen apes' dagger, but Suko refused.

After Kong demands Suko to bring him to the Skar King's domain, the two ventured all the way to a massive lake, where Suko seemed aware of a present threat as he indicated to Kong to drink the water and bathe himself. Kong's presence drew the attention of a Drownviper, which attacked Kong while Suko attempted to flee. However, Kong's axe flew in front of him and tripped him. Kong quickly caught up to the young ape, dragging the beheaded corpse of the Drownviper with him. Later, as Kong sat eating the Drownviper's remains, Suko indicated that he was hungry, but refused to eat near Kong. Kong tore a piece off of the section he was currently eating and threw it aside for Suko, who mimicked Kong's lounging pose as he ate.

Soon, the two eventually arrived at the Skar King's lair, where Suko tried to blend in as Kong tried to help the enslaved apes. This drew out the Skar King, who mocked Kong and menaced Suko. Gnarled Finger, who had been relieved to see Suko again on his return, stood between him and the Skar King, and for this, was kicked into a pool of magma to his death. Suko watches helplessly, but tried to appear inconspicuous as Kong battled the Skar King, and later his mind-controlled slave Shimo. When Kong's hand was damaged by her ice breath, Suko directed Kong to a tunnel in the rock as a means of escape, allowing Kong to flee to safety, although he was pursued by many of Skar King's minions led by One-Eye. Kong lured them into one of his hunting traps, but the other apes were too smart to trigger its tripwire, leaving the injured Kong in peril. Suko, from atop the ravine, pushed the trap into motion, raining boulders down onto the menacing apes and killing them, except One-Eye.

Kong then led Suko to a hidden Iwi civilization where his human friend Jia was responding to a distress call. After Kong passed out from Shimo's frostbite, Suko panicked and ran off, where he discovered that the Skar King, Shimo and Skar King's army of apes were on the move. Suko returned to Kong, who was now equipped with the B.E.A.S.T. Glove given by Monarch, and Kong returned to the surface to lure Godzilla to the Hollow Earth to help fight the Skar King and Shimo.

During the battle between Godzilla, Kong, the Skar King, Shimo, Mothra, and the Skar King's henchmen, Suko joined the fray, striking several of the apes with boulders. However, One-Eye pursued Suko and grabbed him, until the Iwi's gravitational inversion reverted, dropping both apes onto a massive crystal. Suko kicked One-Eye in the face, sending him falling to his death.

After the four warring Titans all fell into a portal to the surface, Suko launched himself at Kong's axe, which had been left behind. He dislodged it from the rock face as he was transported to the surface world. On leaving the portal, Suko used the axe to smash the crystal on the Skar King's Whipslash, severing his control over Shimo. After the Skar King's demise, Suko and Kong rode on Shimo's back down to the lair where the Skar King had once reigned, with Kong now as its new ruler and Suko becoming his adoptive son.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Primate Titan Physiology: As a great ape Titan, Suko is quite powerful, possessing several physical and supernatural attributes as well as possessing many traits of other apes.
    • Enhanced Strength: Like all Great Apes, Suko, despite his small size and young age, is shown to have immense physical strength, allowing him to launch boulders with precision using his strong arms. While his attempt to fight against Kong proved futile and resulted in a quick defeat, his strength is demonstrated when he delivers a forceful kick that successfully propels Skar King's second-in-command One-Eye off a ledge, despite the significant difference in body build compared to Kong's muscular physique. He is also strong enough to lift and swing Kong's battle axe despite the weapon being as large as him, though was easily overpowered by larger Titans.
      • Enhanced Leaping: Suko's strength extends to his legs which allows him to leap great heights and distances. When he first met Kong, Suko was able to jump until he reached Kong's head while his leaps also helped him reach Kong's battle axe when it got stuck in one of the vortices to the surface world.
    • Enhanced Mobility: Suko is an incredibly fast, agile and athletic creature like all primate Titans, allowing him to run fast enough to catch up to Kong while the latter is being pursued by the Skar King's followers. Like all primates, he is also capable of knuckle-walking and running on fours.
    • Enhanced Durability: Despite his small size, Suko is shown to have great resistance. When Kong used him as a weapon against One Eye and the Red Stripes, he did not suffer any injuries before managing to get back up from that as he seemed to be completely fine afterwards. He also survived being sent flying after emerging from a Hollow Earth portal in Rio as well as a shockwave that was generated when the crystal controlling Shimo was destroyed. Like all Titans, Suko can also survive Gravitational Inversion, a planet's worth of gravity reversed in a split second.
    • Enhanced Dexterity: Like all apes, Suko has five fully opposable digits on each of his hands and feet, allowing him to grab objects and opponents firmly with ease.
    • Enhanced Stamina: Suko's musculature is considerably efficient. His virtually inexhaustible stamina enables him to exert himself at peak capacity for an undefined period without getting exhausted or wearing out at all, never needing to slow down when fighting against Kong when they first meet while even showing no signs of fatigue when later helping him and Godzilla fight against Skar King.
    • Enhanced Endurance: Suko's endurance is shown to be quite high, capable of enduring attacks from Kong when they first meet and able to fight while ignoring the pain.
    • Enhanced Senses: Like Kong, Suko possesses acute senses such as sense of smell and hearing, allowing him to sense the presence of a Drownviper before Kong could when the two arrive at a lake.
    • Communication/Sign Language: Like Kong and the other Great Apes, Suko is capable of using sign language to communicate.
    • Self-Sustenance: As a Titan, Suko does not need to eat or sleep, but despite this, he must perform either to quickly replenish his strength or boost his regenerative healing factor from battles. He is even capable of feasting on the flesh of Hollow Earth creatures such as Drownvipers as his sole source for sustenance and, due to his age, he might rely on adults for gathering food for him.
    • Accelerated Healing Factor: Despite his body's resistance, Suko can sustain physical wounds. If injured, his metabolism enables him to regenerate damaged bodily tissue much faster, depending on how serious his wounds are.

Abilities

  • Genius-level Intellect/Master Tactician: As a primate-like Titan, Suko, like Kong, is amazingly intelligent and smart compared to the other Great Apes in the Hollow Earth as his exceptional intelligence shines through in his ability to capitalize on his prior encounter with Kong and devise a plan to manipulate him. His strategic thinking is remarkable as he managed to lure Kong into a lake as a trap for him to be attacked by a Drownviper, successfully lead the latter towards his own home and later managed to activate Kong's traps against Skar King's goons. He even used Kong's battle axe to destroy a crystal that Skar King had used to control Shimo during the final battle in Rio de Janeiro. He also learned to communicate through gestures and signs with other Great Apes and use objects as weapons to attack his opponents while he even knows about the crystal which the Skar King uses to control Shimo, understanding that if it was destroyed, Shimo would no longer be controlled.
  • Weapon Mastery: Like all primate Titans, Suko is capable of wielding objects that he can use as weapons for combat. When Kong was being chased by members of the Red Stripes sent by the Skar King to kill him, Suko managed to activate one of Kong's hunting traps to catch and kill some Red Stripe members. During the zero gravity battle, he used floating rocks as weapons to repel Skar King's right-hand One-Eye and the Skar King's henchmen and later, he used Kong's battle axe to destroy the crystal that Skar King had used to control Shimo during their battle in Rio de Janeiro, despite the weapon being as large as him.
  • Master Combatant: Despite his young age and small size, Suko is shown to be a great fighter, being able to perform a variety of bites, punches, scratches and kicks during his fights with other Titans and Great Apes, allowing him to hold his own against Kong when he first encounters him before later helping him and Godzilla fight against the Skar King.
    • Battle Axe Mastery: Suko is capable of using Kong's battle axe to destroy the crystal that Skar King had used to control Shimo during their battle in Rio de Janeiro, despite the weapon being as large as him.
