Relax, Rookie. He don't mean nothin'. 'sides, now's one of those times? Pays to be the strong, silent type.
~ Dutch about the rookie.

Rookie (real name Jonathan Doherty ) is the main protagonist of Microsoft Game Studios's critically acclaimed title Halo 3: ODST. Biography

Background

Conflict in Jerusalem

By September 2552, the Rookie, a Private First Class, served aboard the UNSC Chares with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Force. He was deployed to assist ODST Gage Yevgenny, who had disobeyed orders to save civilian children. Gage’s Pelican was shot down near Mount Haven by rogue ODSTs.

Mortally wounded, Gage told the Rookie his life story before detonating a stolen Shiva missile to kill himself, the rogue ODSTs, and nearby Covenant forces. The Rookie narrowly escaped and learned that Reach had been glassed. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal and transferred to GySgt Edward Buck’s Alpha-Nine squad.

Battle for Earth

During the Battle of Earth in October 2552, the Rookie and Alpha-Nine prepared to attack a Covenant carrier over New Mombasa. However, ONI operative Veronica Dare redirected their mission. A Slipspace jump from the carrier caused an EMP, scattering the squad's drop pods. The Rookie's pod crash-landed, leaving him unconscious for six hours.

Waking in the occupied city, the Rookie followed guidance from the Superintendent AI to piece together what happened to his team. He eventually found Dare in the New Mombasa Data Center, where she revealed her mission: retrieving data from the AI. Together, they protected a Huragok named Vergil, which held critical information.

Reuniting with Buck, the squad fought through Covenant forces to escape the city. They used a stolen Phantom to flee as New Mombasa was glassed. A month later, the Rookie rested while the squad observed Sgt. Johnson interrogating Vergil.
