Rein Shroud also known as Hero of Horizon, is the titular main protagonist of the Japanese Light Novel Franchise, The Beast Tamer Who Was Exiled from His Party Meets a Cat Girl From the Strongest Race. He is a Beast Tamer who was expelled by his former party led by the despicable "hero" Arios Orlando (his archnemesis). After signing a contract with numerous magical beasts he encountered called Demi-humans, Rein sought to improve himself and protect his new hometown, Horizon.
He was voiced by Shōya Chiba in Japanese and Kevin D. Thelwell in English.
Overview
Rein is a beast tamer and the last known survivor of his homeland, Beast Tamer Village. His parents (Ash and Sofitia) were very powerful and famous Beast Tamers in the world due to them being descendants of the First Hero. He lost his parents and everyone as he witnessed his home village's destruction. He later joined the Hero's Party until he was banished by the "Hero" Arios Orlando (his future archnemesis who deludedly believed that Beast Tamers are useless in physical and magical combat). He resided at Horizon and became an adventurer of the Adventurer's Guild. He meet a Demi-Human from the Cat Tribe named Kanade. He made a contract with Kanade where he gain strength and power by making pacts with Demi-Humans from different Tribes where his journey to become the strongest has began. He and Kanade fought and defeated the strongest Demi-Human from the Dragon Tribe named Tania. He also made a pact with Tania and gain her strength. He later reunited his now weak and useless former teammates of the Hero's Party who wants Rein to come back (due to their incapability when they were unable to defeat the Demon Lord's army without Rein) but he refused to rejoin them (knowing they would eventually dispose him again). For Arios' insults towards his companions, Rein punched him in the face. The Hero Party challenged Rein, Kanade and Tania into a duel, but he and his newly companions easily defeated them due to his newfound powers (beyond their own abilities).
He later met Sora (a fairy from Fairy Tribe) and helped her to rescue her twin sister, Luna who was captured by a Shadow Knight (a C-Rank Monster that is a member of the Demon Lord's army). Rein later made pact with Fairy Tribe twins and gain their powers. He confronted with the arrogant mayor and the son of the ruler of Horizon, Edgar Fromware (his self-proclaimed love rival and a women obsessing pervert) who attempted to steal Sora and Luna. Rein formed an alliance with the Vice-Captain of the Knights, Stella Enplace to overthrow Edgar, his father and Stella's fellow knights (who abandoned their justice for Edgar and his father's benefit) including Captain Jill Stregger. Rein freed and made pact with Nina (a demi-human from the God Tribe) who was Edgar's slave. Rein easily defeathed both the demonized Edgar and later the delusional "hero" Arios (who attempted to frame him as a murderer) again as far clearing his name from his falsely accused murder and completely written Arios off as a delusional traitor where the now-former hero has lost his title and was placed under arrest for the crimes he committed thanks to the assistance from Princess Sarya. Rein later passed his A-Rank Promotion Exams as a token of forgiveness by the Adventurer's guild for falsely arresting him because of Arios' lies and deception.
After defeating Arios, Edgar, the former ruler, and the traitorous knights, Rein is widely known by Horizon as the Hero of Horizon. He was later offered by King Argus as the next hero of replacing Arios Orlando (his archnemesis) but he declined when not only he already forgiven the King for Arios' treason but also given him advice to select a Hero more carefully from now on, which King Argus obliged to his suggestion. He meet the next Hero Chiffon Nox (his fangirl and the only person who hold a great hatred towards Arios Orlando, more than Rein does and equaled to Rein's companions' own hatred towards Orlando (that including Kanade and Tania (who hated Arios the worst)).
After Arios escape and join the Demon Lord, Rein and his companions are going to find and eliminate both Arios and the Demon Lord. However, he became wrathful and dreaded when hearing and witnessing the deaths of his former teammates of the Hero's Party due to Arios' betrayal (Aggath was killed by the demons under Arios' order for his attempted to kill the ex-hero, Leanne was disposed and turned into a demon by Monica (who was order by Arios' himself) causing Rein to unwillingly kills the demonic Leanne, and Mina died along with the archbishop during the demon war for forming an alliance with Rein and betraying Arios) of Mina's desire of wanting Arios dead. Their deaths has caused to Rein sent out to kill Arios for what he has done.
Appearance
Rein is a tall, well-built, and cool-looking man. He has messy, ash grey hair along a black mesh with bangs in front of his forehead and green eyes, wearing a light periwinkle and white shirt with folded sleeves, a brown belt around his waist, which has a pouch for his ammunition or certain items, light green pants with the blazer tied around her waist. He is wearing dark brown fingerless gloves with matching boots with light yellow lining on the boot cuff. He wears Narukami on his right hand which allows him to set ambushes that make it a standard weapon for Rein as a beast tamer.
He's been described as being a cute and handsome man by his contractuals.
Personality
As the sole survivor of his village, he is careful not to get carried away and become arrogant. As a result, he is extremely self-aware and humble, but that leads him to become too good of a person, as he was unable to seek through motives of his former party members. He is kind, helping his friends and protecting his contractuals whenever needed. Even being kicked out of the party, he never stops aspiring to dream of becoming an adventurer, which shows his positive nature.
He is extremely tolerant even if someone has bad-mouthed him. However, he displays aggression and ruthlessness toward anyone threatening his friends. He is also prepared to risk his life for the sake of other people, such as when he saves a stranger from a group of thugs. According to Tania, his easily trusting nature can lead to trouble, but it's a good trait since it makes many people help out. When he sets his mind to a goal, he puts his all towards completing it. He will put himself on the line to protect others, even knowing it won't be in his own interest to do so and even if he doesn't actually want to do it. This is demonstrated when Arios tries to recruit him for help with the Lost Forest despite having kicked him out of their party. Rein clearly doesn't want anything to do with them, but Arios's party is trying to stop a threat to the entire world, so Rein agrees. Rein offers to help Sora within the Lost Forest itself even though she's already given them what they came for, and they have no other reason to remain. Tania tends to chide him as being "too good of a person" because of this, while Kanade realizes it's due to Rein's village being destroyed in his childhood. He doesn't want to see someone else suffer that same kind of tragedy. This also caused him to earn the affection of his contractuals and several others.
As a beast tamer, he has already shown to defy the logic of the class. Rein himself seems oblivious to his own increased aptitude until Kanade points it out, and what's known of his past suggests his now-destroyed hometown was home to Beast Tamers of similar ability to his own.
Abilities and Powers
- Beast Tamers ability: As a beast tamer, Rein has the ability tame beast with temporarily contracts. Normally said that ordinary beast tamers can only controls 2 beasts, but Rein is unique when he has control more than 10 beasts. Due to him being born at Loudnaire (a powerful nation for very strong beast tamers), Rein has the ability to form contracts with Demi-Humans in order to gain their strength and abilities. According to Tania, Rein has control 10,000 beasts. According to King Argus, Rein only acquired these abilities because he acquired "Limit Break" when Rein has revealed to be a descendant of the First Hero due to his blood.
- Supernatural Physical Strength: After forming a contract with Kanade, Rein has gained immense physical strength. Shown he easily defeated an adventurer in an arm wrestle. He is more powerful than ordinary humans (including those who are blessed with powers) as he easily defeated his future archnemesis and former hero, Arios Orlando twice. He also defeated the Demon imbued Edgar Fromware without any difficulty.
- Supernatural Immobility: Rein possessed Superhuman speed when he faster than speed blessed humans as he is too fast that not even Arios could keep up.
- Supernatural Magic: After forming a contract with Tania, Rein possessed very powerful magical abilities. He can easily dispel such weak magic such when he destroyed Arios' lightning magic without any efforts. After making pact with Sora, Rein has gained extremely control over his magical powers. Due to his pact with Raiha, he possessed very strong lightning abilities (even more powerful than that of the former hero Arios).
- Immunity: Due to his pact with Luna, Rein possessed immunity to all conditional threats. Poison Magic is useless against him. Even Edgar's Grim Reaper's magic is completely worthless against him. This all shown that Rein is completely invulnerable to any status effecting threats. With both the Immunity and fiery regeneration (from Finia of the Phoenix Tribe), Rein is now immortal.
- Material Creation: Due to him making pact with Nina from the God Tribe, Rein can able to create something by his imagination. He cast magic and then, instead of consuming magical power, a certain substance was generated.
- Summoning: Due to his pact with Iris, Rein has the ability to summon creatures but not as capable as Iris.
- Navigation: As a former navigator of the Hero's Party, Rein has greatest skill for navigation. Unlike his former dimwitted-yet-weak teammates (who took them months), it only takes for Rein a week to search for the Shield of Truths.
- Gravity Manipulation: Due to his pact with Tina Hollee (a former human who died and became a ghost), Rein has the ability to control gravity.
- Magic Eye: Due to his pact with Rifa from the Vampire Tribe, Rein is able to paralyze or charm whoever look into his eyes.
- Regeneration/Immortality: Due to him making pact with Finia from the Phoenix Tribe, Rein has the ability to regenerate himself with fire. He can easily heal his wounds and injuries automatically. This regeneration and the immunity from status conditions has made Rein to be immortal.
Heroic Acts
- Saving Kanade from a D-Rank monster and made pact with her
- Defeating Tania and made pact with her.
- He along with Kanade and Tania easily defeating his former teammates of the Hero Party as payback for banishing him.
- Convince Sora of helping her rescuing her sister Luna from a Shadow Knight. He eventually made pact with them.
- Defeating a villainous Beast Tamer and destroyed the Behemoth.
- Helping Vice Captain of the Knights, Stella Enplace of overthrowing Edgar Fromware and his father.
- He freed Edgar's slaves and leave them to brutalized their tormentor for their revenge on Fromware. He made pact with Niina.
- Helping Tina Hollee (a maid who is now a ghost) of arresting her murderer. He eventually make pact with Tina.
- With the help of Sarya, he cleared his name from the false accused murder and defeated Arios Orlando again. Completely written Arios (who revealed to be the real culprit for allowing the murder upon the members of the Adventurer's Guild) as a traitor and a most wanted criminal with the help of Sarya and her father, King Argus Van Rollreeze.
- Unintentionally killed the demonized Leanne (who was betrayed by both Arios and Monica).
- Sent out with his companions to kill both the Demon Lord and the traitor, Arios Orlando (Rein's archnemesis).
- Helping the new hero, Chiffon Nox.
- Forming an alliance with Mina (Arios' last surviving teammate who betrayed Arios) of her new goals which is kill Arios, saving humanity and avenge both Leanne and Aggath before Mina and the Holy Church's archbishop were killed by the demons under Arios' commands.
- Killed Arios and avenge Aggath, Leanne and Mina.
Trivia
- He gives head pats to all his contractual.
- Because he never met other Tamers after his village burned down, Rein has zero clue how overpowered he is as a Tamer.
- Even the Hero's Party feel like total morons for kicking him out; after realizing that they would need to suck up to Rein to get him back. Unfortunately their massive egos prevented them from humbling themselves and admitting their mistake, which made Rein's relationship with them worse. This was until the Hero's Party met their demise at the hands of their former leader and "friend" Arios Orlando. Mina (the last surviving member of the Party who betrayed Arios after the deaths of both Aggath and Leanne) is the only member who formed an alliance with Rein to kill Arios when she now realized how evil Orlando truly is, before she (along with the archbishop) was killed by the demons (who were sent by Arios).
- As the story in 2023, Rein is revealed to be okay with polygamy as he is engaged to Kanade and Tania.
