Peri Brown

Peri Brown is a major protagonist in Season 21 and the main deuteragonist of the Sixth Doctor Era of Doctor Who.

She was portrayed by Nicola Bryant.

Biography

Peri was an American student holidaying in Lanzarote. She was saved from drowning by Turlough and taken to the TARDIS, which the Doctor then transported to the planet Sarn not knowing she was on board. There, she became caught up in the Master's subversion of the Doctor's robot companion Kamelion in order to restore his strength with the numismaton flame. After Turlough chose to return to his home planet Trion on a ship summoned to evacuate the planet's natives, Peri convinced the Doctor to let her travel on with him.

Peri's travels with the fifth Doctor came to a swift end on the planet Androzani Minor, where they were both infected by raw spectrox after getting caught up in a war between government forces backed by crooked industrialist Morgus and the renegade Sharaz Jek, the first of many they encountered who desired Peri as a consort. The Doctor gave Peri the only cure they had, regenerating to save his life. Peri would initially have a very abrasive relationship with the sixth Doctor.

Over the following months, Peri encountered most of the Doctor's deadliest foes, visiting the Cybermen's tombs on Telos, being temporarily turned into a bird-like creature by the machinations of Sil, thwarting an attempt by the Sontarans and the renegade Androgum Chessene to steal a time machine with the aid of the second Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon, and getting caught up in Davros' attempt to create a new Dalek army. She was also desired by the Borad, who nearly turned her into a half-Morlox hybrid like himself.

Ultimately, Peri's journeys with the Doctor came to an end during another encounter with Sil on his home planet Thoros-Beta. Peri was chosen to be the new body for Sil's superior Lord Kiv, a process that would destroy all traces of her own personality. The Doctor was taken out of time by the Time Lords before he could save her and believed she had been killed. However, he was later informed she had survived and married King Yrcanos of Krontep, whom she had fallen in love with.

Various tie-in fiction have given different fates for Peri. A number, notably the graphic novel The Age of Chaos, depicted her as living a happy life on Krontep and having a family, being encountered by the Doctor decades later. The novel Bad Therapy had her quickly tiring of her life as queen and fleeing through a portal to 1950s Earth, before being returned to her own time by the Seventh Doctor. The novelisation "Mindwarp" has her and Yrcanos returned to Earth in the 1980s by the Time Lords. In an attempt to reconcile this, the Big Finish audios claimed the Time Lords created several copies of Peri who lived out various alternate lives, with one version eventually rejoining the Doctor for a time.

The webcast The Eternal Mystery established another account, where Peri reigned as Queen for many years alongside her husband Yrcanos, bringing about a new age of peace and prosperity to Krontep. After her husband passed away, Peri decided that her people no longer needed a figurehead and resumed travelling with the Doctor, although she visited Krontep once a year to check on the progress of her former subjects, as well as to pay fond tribute to Yrcanos.

Trivia

  • Peri's character was intended to use sex appeal to draw in more viewers. Which why all of her outfits in Season 22 had low neckline and exposed her legs. The idea was dropped in Season 23, where Peri is written off as a companion.
  • Its heavily implied the original fate of Peri was to be the queen of Yrcanos. Tales of the TARDIS and The Eternal Mystery back this up as Peri is called the Warrior queen. In Tales of The TARDIS, she visits Yrcanos' death monument.
    • Though one story suggested Peri wasn't truly happy with her fate as queen on an alien planet. This was pretty much forced on her, by the Time Lords indirectly; leaving Peri unable to choose her fate. She was a college student at the time and hadn't figured out her path in life. This was later contradicted in later works, which established Peri as happy with Yrcanos, even embracing his lust for battle.
  • If the Time Lords hadn't duplicated Peri, this would caused a lot of worry for her mother and trouble for Howard. The last time her stepfather saw her, he had left Peri on his boat in the middle of the river. So not only would she be considered dead, but Howard would get falsely arrested and her mother would be alone.
