Obito Uchiha

Hero Overview

Those who break the rules are trash, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash! If I'm going to be called trash either way, I'd rather break the rules! And if that somehow makes me anything less than a real shinobi, then I'll crush all of the so-called "real" shinobi!
~ Obito espousing the value of teamwork to Kakashi, and his most famous quote.
Now I finally realised that faking one's name and letting others do everything for you is different than entrusting something to one's comrades. I'm not you. The current me is the one who wanted to become Hokage: Obito Uchiha!
~ Obito rejecting Madara's ideals and redeeming himself.
I'm gonna get going soon. I really made a mess out of the shinobi world. So much that I don't even know what to say to you before I go. Thanks, Kakashi. I'll be going then. I told her beforehand I'd be helping you.
~ Obito's last words to Kakashi before going to the Pure Land.

Obito Uchiha is one of the two main antagonists of the manga/anime series Naruto. He is a member of Konohagakure's Uchiha clan who was believed to have died during the Third Shinobi World War, his only surviving legacy being the Sharingan he entrusted to his teammate and rival Kakashi Hatake.

In truth, Obito was saved from death and trained by Madara Uchiha, but the events of the war left Obito disillusioned with the world, and he sought to replace it with a new one. Using the aliases of Tobi (トビ, Tobi) and Madara Uchiha, Obito manipulated the Akatsuki from the shadows to further his plans, eventually going public with them and in the process starting the Fourth Shinobi World War. He nonetheless killed Konan to transplant the Rinnegan from Nagato's corpse into his missing left eye. After he fought against Kakashi to remove the Forbidden Curse Tag that Madara placed inside his heart, he became the Ten Tails' Jinchuriki.

After the Tailed Beasts were extracted from Obito, he became weakened and Black Zetsu took control of his body to use Rinne Rebirth Jutsu to revive Madara from the Reanimation Jutsu. Obito took pieces of Shukaku and Gyūki's Chakra and sealed them with Kurama's other half within Naruto Uzumaki allowing him to awaken the Sage of Six Paths Chakra. After being revealed of being Madara's pawn by manipulating him into the darkness after Rin's death, he had a change of heart towards the war's conclusion, however, and ended up sacrificing his life to save the very world he sought to replace.

As an adult, he was voiced by Wataru Takagi in the Japanese version (who voiced Eikichi Onizuka in Great Teacher Onizuka and Okuyasu Nijimura in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable) and Michael Yurchak (Todd Haberkorn in Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution) in English. As a child, he was voiced by Megumi Han in the Japanese version and Vic Mignogna in the English dub.

Obito was a shinobi of Konohagakure and a member of the Uchiha clan. While the rest of his clan were prodigies, Obito was something of an underachiever. He was also frequently late, due to spending time helping out the elderly when he should've been preparing for ninja missions. Like Naruto, he dreamed of being Hokage.

Obito had a crush on his teammate Rin. Unfortunately for him, she only had eyes for Kakashi. Obito and Kakashi had a one-sided rivalry similar to Naruto and Sasuke.

Presumed Death

On one mission, Rin was kidnapped. Obito argued with Kakashi over whether or not they should rescue her or complete the mission. They decided to split up, with Obito going after Rin and Kakashi completing the mission. Ultimately, Kakashi decides to put the mission aside to help his teammates. Obito covers him when they're attacked by ninja, awakening his Sharingan in the process. Obito is then crushed under a boulder when the ninja hideout is destroyed. Knowing that he couldn't survive this, Obito offered his Sharingan to replace Kakashi's damaged eye and requested that Kakashi protect Rin for him. The rest of the hideout then caved in on Obito as Kakashi and Rin escaped. Obito was then hailed as a hero by his village, with Kakashi swearing to uphold Obito's legacy and becoming a kinder Shinobi.

Turn to Villainy

Obito holding Rin

Unknown to them, Obito had survived and was being rehabilitated by Madara Uchiha. Madara replaced all of Obito's damaged body parts with a synthetic matter that would function in place of bones, muscle and organs. When Obito regained the ability to walk, he journeyed out to find Kakashi and Rin, but much to his shock, he saw Kakashi killing Rin. As Kakashi passed out from a combination of grief and fatigue, both he and Obito awakened their Mangekyo Sharingan. Obito then went on a killing spree as several enemy ninja came after them. He then came back to Madara, now disillusioned with reality and wanting to get revenge on the world for being so cruel. Before dying, Madara taught Obito all of his secrets and told him to masquerade as himself until he could bring Madara's plan to fruition.

For the next 16 years, Obito caused untold disasters throughout the ninja world. He orphaned Naruto, helped wipe out the Uchiha clan, save for Sasuke and Itachi. At some point he manipulated the Fourth Mizukage under Genjutsu for nearly the entirely of his life. He also became affiliated with the Akatsuki, converting it from a group of freedom fighters to a terroristic organization.

History

With the Akatsuki

Tobi1

Obito initially goes under the alias Tobi while working with Akatsuki to cover his identity. He also starts acting like a simpleton to further deflect attention away from himself. When the Akatsuki starts losing members, Obito drops the Tobi persona and switches to his Madara guise. As Madara, Obito lures Sasuke over to his side and starts a war with the ninja world.

The Unveiling

Obitounmasked

Shortly after the real Madara Uchiha is revived, Obito's cover is blown. He then engages with both Naruto and his old teammate Kakashi. After clashing with Naruto, he's surprised to see the young ninja whose life he ruined reaching out to him. He resists Naruto's offer of forgiveness, before caving in to the feelings of regret and loneliness he'd been feeling up to that point.

Redemption & Death

Obito dies

After Zetsu uses Obito to forcibly bring Madara back to his full strength, Obito decides to turn on his old partner and steals some of Madara's energy, which he then gives to a near-death Naruto. Madara reveals to Obito that he had actually manipulated events so that Obito's spirit would be crushed and he'd be easier to control. Obito is then knocked unconscious and used as a host for Zetsu.

When Zetsu then turns on Madara and uses him to revive Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, Naruto returns the favor and heals Obito. Obito then fights alongside Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi as the only only resistance left against Kaguya. When Kaguya fires a flesh-eating missile at Naruto, Obito takes the hit. Naruto tries to heal him, but the damage overrides his abilities. Knowing that he only had seconds to live, Obito told Naruto to be the man he couldn't.

As Obito's went into the afterlife, he met Rin on the other side. Rin offered to stay by Obito, but Obito had one last task to accomplish before moving on with her. His spirit then merged with Kakashi and he gave him the power of his other Sharingan. With both of Obito's Sharingan, Kakashi was able to unleash the Sharingan's full power and summon the Susanóo spirit. After Kaguya's defeat, Kakashi lost the power of the Sharingan for good. He briefly went into a trance where he saw Obito and the two were able to say goodbye as friends before Obito's spirit moved on to the afterlife.

Powers and Abilities

TOBI'S~1

While a member of the Uchiha clan who became a chūnin at the age of 11, Obito's overall prowess as a shinobi was average at best, constantly behind his other classmates. In spite of this relatively slow development in his younger years, Obito's talent began to surface after awakening his Sharingan, with Guruguru later noting Obito's potential as the reason why Madara had chosen him as his disciple. As an adult, trained by Madara, Obito became an extremely powerful shinobi with his abilities being a near-mirror image of Madara's own, enabling him to deceive many high-level shinobi into believing he was Madara. Obito has been able to hold his own against multiple Kage-level and S-rank shinobi as well as perfect jinchūriki on numerous occasions.

Taijutsu

Obito kicks a Kiri-nin

As a child, Obito was fairly skilled with taijutsu, though not at the same level as Kakashi or Might Guy. After his rehabilitation with Madara, he showed noticeable improvement, able to subdue multiple Kirigakure Anbu. In his adulthood, he was able to go up against Kakashi, a taijutsu expert. He mostly achieves these feats by using taijutsu in tandem with his Sharingan and space-time technique to allow opponents to pass through him and then quickly counter using the elements of surprise and confusion. With his artificial body, Obito's physical strength was increased significantly. With his artificial right arm, he was able to crack a massive boulder, lift Konan by her throat, and stop a slash from Kubikiribōchō without being injured. Obito survived being impaled through the chest by Kakashi's lightning-infused kunai long enough to become the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. As a child, Obito showed noticeable reflexes and agility, able to quickly get rid of a trap sprung on his team. He also displayed speed against the Kirigakure ninja he fought, closing distances quickly and landing a series of swift blows and punches before any of them could react. As an adult, Obito's agility was great enough that he was able to keep up with Naruto in his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode.

Sharingan & Rinnegan

Obito uchiha

Like all Uchiha, Obito has the power of the Sharingan. With the Sharingan, he can read the movements of enemy ninja and either nullify their attacks or copy them.

After witnesing Rin's death, Obito is so overcome with grief that he awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan. Obito's Mangekyo Sharingan is unique in that it can make him intangible whenever he activates it, as well as teleporting either himself or enemies to a pocket dimension. He can also place others under genjutsu if they are inside the Kamui Dimension. When facing troublesome opponents Obito opts to trap them there such as Minato. Obito reliance on Kamui for the majority of the series and thus he is fully aware of the risks of his Dojutsu.

Obito can use the power of Susanó'o, though he never gets the chance to use it himself as he spends a majority of the story with only one eye, it wasn't until the Uchiha massacre that he stocks up for another eye. Therefore Obito can't access his full power. By the time Obito gets both his eyes back, he's too weak to summon Susanó'o. It's only when Kakashi gains the power of both Sharingan that Obito's Susanó'o is seen. When both Kakashi left eye uses Kamui and with Obito's right eye Kamui, Obito has shown to double the speed of his teleportation being fast enough to evade Madara's Truth-Seeking Orb. With both of his Mangekyo Obito has shown the ability to link between other dimensions, opening portals, although he requires a massive amount of chakra reserves since it's not his own dimension.

For a while, Obito had access to Madara's Rinnegan, which replaced his missing Sharingan. With the Rinnegan, Obito could control up to six undead humans as his personal substitutes. He could also summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, the husk of the Ten-Tailed Beast. Madara switch back for his Rinnegan and Obito's own Mangekyo Sharingan that was given to Kakashi.

Mokuton

Obito-releasing-wood

After being mended by Madara, Obito gained the ability to use wood-based attacks. He is only seen using this ability to impale people on branches. Since his internal organs have been replaced with plant matter, Obito doesn't need to eat. Obito can also channel wood release attacks to the Ten-Tails.

The Power of the Ten-Tailed Beast

Obito jinchuriki

Obito eventually gained the power of the Ten-Tailed Beast, a task that Madara originally wanted Obito to help himself with. As the host to the Ten-Tails, Obito has near-godlike strength and is impervious to most physical attacks. He also had the ability to cause cataclysms and wipe out entire cities. If Obito were allowed enough time to become acclimated to these powers, he could potentially put all living things under a permanent hypnosis.

Personality

In his youth, Obito was constantly late, which, more often than not, was due to the good deeds he had stopped to do, such as aiding the elderly. Having made it a point in his life to do so, he noted that he knew all the elderly persons in Konoha, stopped once on his way to the Chūnin Exams to help an elderly woman carry her luggage, and even comically offered to clean Madara's nether regions when he met him. Obito was also easily moved to tears, which he always insisted was because he had gotten something in his eyes despite wearing goggles. Obito was in love with Rin; but his feelings were not mutual as Rin was attracted to Kakashi instead. Frustrated by this, Obito envied Kakashi's prodigious skills, and so constantly sought to surpass him. Although these efforts usually ended in failure, he was able to spend time with Rin while she treated his injuries. Ultimately, Obito would never get the chance to reveal his feelings to Rin before his "death". As Kakashi noted, besides his student's rivalry with Sasuke and one-sided feelings for a female peer, Naruto shared other beliefs Obito had, such as his desire to become Hokage and never abandoning comrades on the battlefield. Even after "dying", Obito still cared deeply for his friends and village, and immediately wanted to return to see them again. However, upon witnessing Rin's death at the hands of Kakashi, Obito's determination and idealism were destroyed beyond any hope of repair, and as a result his personality forever changed.

By the time he reached adulthood, conditioned by Madara to continue his work, Obito's personality changed drastically as he became extremely focused, calm, and serious. From his former loyalty and ideologies that seems to be derived from the Will of Fire, he had succumbed to his clan's Curse of Hatred with the entire world itself as the object of his loathing and the shinobi system that led to Rin's senseless death being what made him lose hope in it. This conviction became increasingly stronger to the point of Obito no longer caring for his well being, stating that nobody and that nothing in this world matters to him besides the Eye of the Moon Plan. This lack of empathy includes those close to him, attacking Minato and Kakashi without hesitation, not caring if he ended up killing them as he believes once the Eye of the Moon Plan is completed, he can just revive them along with Rin. Only Obito's love for Rin remained, his desire to create a peaceful world where she would exist together with him happily becoming the motivation for his actions, a determination that proved strong enough for him to resist the Ten-Tails' corruption of his consciousness and allowed him to assume control of its vast powers. He also became friends with Zetsu prior to his personality change, being one of his few (if not only) genuinely positive relationships that he maintained in his adulthood.

Despite Madara being the one who saved his life and gave him purpose of the plan, Obito later disregarded his gratitude and openly stated to Madara that he doesn't truly consider him an ally. He also took advantage of his own necessity in Madara's ultimate ambition of becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki in order to plunge the Allied Shinobi Forces into despair. In truth, Obito never intended for Madara to become the Ten-Tails' host, instead desiring to be the vessel of the beast himself.

While frequently arrogant about his own abilities and disrespectful of those he considers as weak, Obito is not above giving praise to his enemies, such as his former teacher Minato for being able to wound him and Kakashi for his speed. He also appreciated Itachi Uchiha, saying that Itachi never ceased to amaze him, and that if he had not kept some secrets from Itachi, Obito would have died from the latter's last trap. He had also forsaken his dream of being Hokage and ideals of camaraderie, and derided Naruto for having both qualities. His own disdain for his former dreams and belittlement of the morals of his opponents was extended towards his former compatriot Kakashi, berating him not to open his mouth so easily, Guy for always forgetting people's faces, as well as Minato for always being late during times of crisis. While Obito's words are often painfully striking, they often hold much truth - he seems to enjoy debating with the enemy, severely shaking down Naruto's determination after Neji's death, citing that Naruto has lost many people, and that his beliefs would only lead to the deaths of all who had acknowledged him; Madara noted that Obito had become like his own past self.

Although Obito does not blame Kakashi for Rin's death, he considers him trash like himself and anyone who has lived in the world for so long, a twist to his former belief that anyone who abandons their comrades are lower than trash; he nevertheless seemed infuriated when Kakashi mentioned Rin, and responded viciously. Obito has also taken up an aggressive and sadistic disposition, taking the newborn Naruto hostage to release Kurama from his mother and mercilessly killing Torune in order to be reincarnated moments later by using Fū as a sacrifice, all for the purpose of testing Kabuto's abilities.

When first introduced as "Tobi", Obito exaggerated his former personality to ridiculous extremes, acting the role of the happy-go-lucky idiot who annoyed most members of the Akatsuki, particularly Deidara, who frequently attacked Obito in a comedic fashion. Kisame, on the other hand, appreciated Obito's ability to brighten up a gloomy organisation such as theirs. In the anime, Obito was shown keeping up this charade even when no one was around. Eventually, Obito discarded his role as a fool after Deidara's death and used it one final time to distract the Eight Man Squad during Sasuke's battle with Itachi before finally revealing his true self as Naruto and the others struggle to come to terms with the news.

Obito is a proficient manipulator, either by subtly corrupting his target's own goals, omitting parts of stories or events to his own benefit as he did with Sasuke, or by appearing to share their beliefs. This is best seen in the existence of the Akatsuki, its wildly-differing members working together because they believe the organisation furthers their own ends; in actuality they are mere tools that further Obito's agenda, as noted with the case of Nagato. He often avoids responsibility for the influence he has over others, claiming those he coerced and manipulated had followed him willingly. He is also capable of great patience in attaining his goals, even lecturing Sasuke on it at one time. However, his patience isn't unlimited — at one point he chooses to discard caution and proceed with his plan in a more aggressive and decisive manner, and when the Ten-Tails is revived, he insists that the Eye of the Moon ritual be commenced immediately. He is also prone to taking risks — revealing Itachi's true history and motives with Sasuke to win his services was the first of many gambles Obito takes. Even though Sasuke did not always live up to his expectations, such as being unable to defeat the five Kage, Obito was nevertheless happy with his "development": his developing Sharingan and his growing isolation from all other allies. While he had threatened to kill Sasuke at times and even offered to turn him over to others, Obito remained attached to Sasuke, at least until he no longer had use for him. Indeed, when Obito and Sasuke were reunited on the battlefield, the former had attempted to kill the young Uchiha and his allies multiple times after becoming the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails, enforcing the fact that Obito and Sasuke's past relationship was based on mutual gain alone.

Obito has also recently acquired somewhat of a fixation on Naruto Uzumaki, who reminds him of himself in his youth. Because of the similarities between Naruto and himself as a child, Obito expresses great anger towards Naruto for continuing to follow the same ideology that he once possessed until Rin's death, considering him incredibly naive and childish to still believe in such principles. Nonetheless, the Uchiha displayed confidence that Naruto would one day end up like him, and nearly succeeded in proving this point after having the Ten-Tails kill his comrades right before his eyes. However, when this ploy failed to change Naruto's way of thinking thanks to Hinata and Kurama's interference, Obito became rash and careless, accidentally allowing the Ten-Tails to be injured by Killer B after impulsively trying to use its power to kill more of Naruto's allies. When Obito later questioned Naruto why he was exhausting himself to protect his friends if their deaths brought him closer to them, the young ninja's response that having no comrades at all was far more painful than losing them seemed to provoke a slight reaction from the Uchiha. Obito would later reveal to Kakashi, who believed his former friend was using Naruto as some kind of guinea pig, that his intentions with testing Naruto's morals were so that he could asperse everything Naruto believes in, the same ethics he himself once believed in as well. However, the more Naruto repudiated his nihilistic perspective, the more frustrated Obito became.

Kakashi would later deduce the reason for this, noting that Obito's Will of Fire had never actually burned out, and that his actions and unwillingness to acknowledge this are causing him inner turmoil that was tearing him up inside. Indeed, as he clashes with Naruto and Sasuke, Obito briefly envisioned the way his life would have turned out if he had returned to Konoha when Rin died, rejoined his comrades, and even going so far as to imagine himself as Hokage, despite not consciously understanding why. Upon seeing such visions again, Obito would start to conclude that he is subconsciously regretting his actions affiliated with the Eye of the Moon Plan. Despite this, he has consciously convinced himself into not regretting his actions in the slightest just so long as he can bring the Eye of the Moon Plan to fruition.

In the end, however, Naruto's actions succeeded in changing Obito's mindset, allowing Obito to finally overcome his Curse of Hatred. The Uchiha finally understood why Naruto was succeeding while he himself failed after Kakashi explained the reason to him. As a result, Obito openly expressed regret for what he did. Rather than take the "easy" path of dedicating his life to making up for his actions, he chose instead to redeem himself by walking in the footsteps of Nagato and offering his own life to revive all the people he and Madara killed during the battle, solemnly telling Kakashi that he was unworthy of seeing Rin in the afterlife.
