Margaret Claus

Margaret Claus is the wife of Malcolm Claus, the mother of Steve and Arthur, the daughter-in-law of Grandsanta and is a supporting character in the 2011 Christmas film Arthur Christmas. She is based on Mrs. Claus from Christmas folklore.

She is voiced by Imelda Staunton.

Role in the film

Margaret is first seen giving Grandsanta a mince pie whilst he and Arthur are watching Malcolm carrying out his Christmas duties. She then leaves to visit the elf hospital, look over a treaty with Greenland and make gravy.

She is then seen along with her sons and many elves watching Malcolm emerge from his ship the S-1 after coming back from his 70th mission as Santa. She later watches Malcolm give a speech where he thanks his family where he says that he cannot wait for his 71st mission next year. Margaret is later seen joining her family for Christmas dinner following a run in with a polar bear, which Margaret was able to escape from due to taking an online survival course.

Later in bed, Malcolm wonders what he will be if he is not Santa anymore, to which Margaret tells him that he will be "her Malcolm".

After Arthur and Grandsanta leave The North Pole to deliver a bike to a girl named Gwen in Trelew in England that was accidentally not delivered, Margaret along with Malcolm and Steve travel in the S-1 to look for them. When Steve and Malcolm argue over who should pick up Arthur and Grandsanta and Steve thinking that Malcolm cares more about being Santa than being his father, Margaret steps in and berates the two for letting their egos get in the way of helping Arthur and Grandsanta. After arriving in Trelew, Margaret stays in the S-1 whilst Malcolm and Steve go to meet with Arthur and Grandsanta.

At the end of the film, which takes place a year later, it is revealed that after Malcolm retired as Santa and was succeeded by Arthur, he took up salsa dancing with Margaret.

Trivia

  • According to Sarah Smith, the director of Arthur Christmas, Margaret was meant to have more scenes in the film. However, these scenes were cut as there would have been too many characters to invest in and it was decided to invest in Arthur, Grandsanta, Malcolm and Steve.
