Prince Lewyn Nymeros Martell, better known as simply Lewyn Martell, is a minor posthumous character in the ASOIAF novel series. A prince and knight of House Martell, he served King Aerys II Targaryen as a member of his Kingsguard. Lewyn is also the uncle of Prince Doran Martell, Elia Martell, and Oberyn Martell as well as the great-uncle of their children.
Biography
Prince Lewyn Martell was born as the younger brother of the former ruling Princess of Dorne, whose name is not known. At an unknown point, he became a member of King Aerys II's Kingsguard.
Robert's Rebellion
During Robert's Rebellion, As Prince Doran Martell was furious that the Prince of Dragonstone, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, had mistreated his wife Princess Elia Martell by spurning her, House Martell was slow to lend aid to the Loyalists. This caused King Aerys to use Elia as a hostage against not only Doran but also their uncle Lewyn. After Prince Doran agrees to send 10,000 Dornishmen, which threaten to break the left flank of the Rebel Army, the Mad King dispatches Prince Lewyn to lead the contingent against the Rebel Army. He, Ser Barristan Selmy, and Ser Jonothor Darry, two other Kingsguard, aided Prince Rhaegar during the climatic Battle of the Trident.
During the battle, Lewyn Martell was badly wounded and amidst this confusion he duelled Ser Lyn Corbray but was slain in the end. However in reality, because of the wounds that were inflicted on Prince Lewyn (perhaps mortally so), Ser Lyn simply finished him off. Later, as King's Landing is sacked by House Lannister, Elia Martell was brutally murdered alongside Lewyn's great-niece Princess Rhaenys and his great-nephew Prince Aegon. Consequently, all of Dorne was left furious by not only the murders but also the death of Prince Lewyn.
Legacy
Prince Lewyn Martell is well-remembered by House Martell as a kind man who loves his extended family. Princess Arianne Martell, another great-niece of Prince Lewyn and the daughter and heiress of Prince Doran, fondly remembers her great-uncle; In her childhood, Prince Lewyn would tower over and tickle her until she laughed so hard that she could barely breath. In addition, Arys Oakheart remembers Lewyn as a great knight.
Of all the Kingsguard who served the Mad King, Prince Lewyn had a closely-held secret; As in accordance with Dornish customs, he had kept a paramour during his time of service, despite the Kingsguard taking an oath of chastity. His fellow Kingsguard, though they were aware of it, kept it a secret from anyone, as Lewyn didn't let it interfere with his duty.
