Jim Lake Jr.

Hero Overview

Destiny… is a gift. Some go their entire lives, living existence as a quite desperation. Never learning the truth that what feels as though a burden pushing down upon our shoulder, is actually, a sense of purpose that lifts us to greater heights. Never forget that fear is but the precursor to valor, and to strive and triumph in the face of fear is what it means to be a hero. Don't think. Become.
~ Jim’s final words as well as narrating the ending.
In the darkest hour, I burn brightest!
~ Jim before killing Gunmar once and for all.
For the glory of Merlin, daylight is mine to command!
~ The words Jim must say in order to summon his armor and blade.

James "Jim" Lake Jr. is the main protagonist of the Tales of Arcadia franchise. He is the leader of Team Trollhunters who is chosen to be Merlin's champion as the first human Trollhunter and is trained by his mentor Blinky Galadrigal, set out to save both mankind and trollkind from Gunmar the Black and his Gumm-Gumm army, later becoming the co-leader of the Guardians of Arcadia alongside Douxie Casperan. He is also Dr. Barbara Lake's son and Claire Nuñez's boyfriend.

In Parts 1 and 2 of Trollhunters and a small portion of Part 3, he was voiced by the late Anton Yelchin who also played Pavel Chekov in Star Trek, Kyle Reese in Terminator: Salvation, Charlie Bartlett in the film of the same name, Charley Brewster in the Fright Night remake and voiced Shun Kazama in the English dub of From Up on Poppy Hill, and the Clumsy Smurf in the 2011 Smurfs film, its sequel, The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol, and The Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow.

In Part 3 of Trollhunters, as well as in 3Below, Wizards, and the film Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, he is voiced by Emile Hirsch, who also played Speed Racer in the titular film.

Physical Appearance

Jim is a rather tall, slim young man of fifteen (later, sixteen), with blue eyes and short dark brown hair. He wears a blue zip-up jacket with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and a white shirt underneath. He has blue jeans and blue and white sneakers.

While using the Amulet of Daylight, Jim wears a silver suit of knight's armor, complete with breastplate, pauldrons, blue trimmings, greaves, and sabatons. Underneath the armor, he wears a sort of black undershirt, although this inner layer has never been fully shown. While wielding the Amulet of Eclipse, this armor is black with red trimmings. Both armors have their respective amulets mounted on Jim's left chest and their swords stowed on the backs of the armors.

In his half-troll form, Jim's skin pigment became blue, his hair became unkempt, he got two lower fangs, large horns, yellow sclera, pointy ears, and his right hand becomes bigger and loses its pinky finger, becoming more troll-like, while his left-hand remains human but armored. When he becomes fully-troll after pushing the Onyx Shard into his heart, Jim becomes bulkier with larger horns and sharper teeth. His eyes and linings glow yellow under his own control, yellow under the Green Knight's control, and purple under Claire's influence.

Personality

I think the appealing part about Jim is we all know him in real life somewhere, and I feel like Jim makes the courageous choices we would make in any given situation.
~ Elaine Bogan describing Jim's personality.

In the beginning of the series, Jim was first scene as the caretaker around his house, aiding his mother, Barbara Lake. Despite it being Barbara's job to take care of him, he likes taking care of her because of how much work she does as a doctor. He is also shown to have a reputation for being an all-around cool guy, though it is implied that this is just to get people to like him.

Jim can get nervous often, as he didn't want to accept his new position as the Trollhunter, having never been in a fight before, or was too nervous to ask his crush, Claire, to the dance. However, when he perseveres and tries, despite his fear, he can succeed in his job, which proves how brave and hard-working he really is. Jim was also reluctant to kill people as part of his job, but when he started gaining more self-defense instincts, he became somewhat brave enough to do it. After getting used to being the Trollhunter, he was braver than ever, such as when fighting against Bular and the Changelings.

Powers and Abilities

  • Peak Human Condition: While initially having the simple capabilities of anyone his age, after spending months of being trained by trolls, Jim has grown significantly stronger and more durable than an average teenager, able to keep up with enemies twice his size & move swiftly with ease.
  • Biking Skills: Even before encountering all kinds of supernatural things, Jim is an exceptionally skilled biker on both normal and motorbike alike, with his encounters with the supernatural effectively making him even more skilled than before.
  • Swordsmanship: Initially very sloppy with wielding swords, especially those that are half his size, after getting some proper training from Draal, Jim is now capable of wielding any sword with great proficiency and is able to go blade-to-blade with even the most skilled of magical swordsmen.

Trivia

  • Jim Lake Jr. is the last character Anton Yelchin voiced before he died on June 19, 2016. Despite his death, he completed his role in the entire series, and his voice was able to continue throughout every episode in Season 3, and his final words were used in the last episode of Trollhunters.
  • Until Part 3 of Trollhunters, the only humans who knew he's the Trollhunter, are Toby, Claire, his mom Barbara (whose memory was erased), Eil Pepperjack, and Steve Palchuk.
  • Jim Lake Jr. bares a slight and striking resemblance to Hiccup from DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon franchise (coincidentally, another franchise owned by DreamWorks Animation).
