Guy Spelunky, also known as Spelunky Guy, Player, Lowa Jack and commonly Derek Yu, is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside his daughter), Spelunker, and player, of the infamously difficult award-winning Xbox Live Arcade indie roguelike platformer Spelunky series.
Many elements in the game allude to a hidden backstory, but all of these subjects such as parents and other important people to him have been vaguely touched on. Because of this, hardly anything is known about Spelunky's backstory. However, Spelunky 2 has revealed that after the events of the first game, he married an adventurer named Tina Flan, who defeated King Yama, and had a daughter named Ana Spelunky, now the protagonist of her own game.
Story
The formerly unnamed Guy Spelunky has remained very mysterious for nearly 12 years since Spelunky's creation in 2008. It was ported on XBLA in 2012, which is when it received fame for a time. From what we can deduce, he has a deceased father and a girl of unknown importance whom he deeply cares about. Following the release of Spelunky 2 in 2020, his name was revealed, and he was revealed to have a daughter named Ana. This means that the unnamed girl is likely his wife, but the fact that he has a kid doesn't necessarily confirm she was his wife. During the events of Spelunky, Spelunky explores a colossal cave that is incredibly dangerous, but filled with treasure and ancient artifacts beyond imagination. It is his quest to explore the cave and find treasure-- the way he does so is by choice of the player. He can either save the damsels or rob the shopkeepers, though the game makes it easier to save damsels than rob shopkeepers, since shopkeepers wield shotguns. Some enemies found in the caves are spiders, bats, ghosts, vampires, piranhas, giant bees, yetis, cavemen, and many more.
Guy Spelunky can do many heroic things in the game, such as save damsels, which the game encourages you to do, and slay evil creatures such as King Yama, ruler of hell, and the aliens. But since he can do many evil things as well such as sacrifice damsels to Kali, and shoplift, he is of the same moral standard as The Lone Wanderer from Fallout 3. As such, he can be seen as a combination of The Lone Wanderer and Mario, with some Indiana Jones influence. However, he seems to at least be a decent man considering he has a daughter.
In the second game, he is missing, and his daughter must find her.
Virtues
- Monstricide: Killing hostile monsters protects both himself and others, such as the damsels, which he rescues often due to the player benefitting from it.
- Deicide: Evil deities such as Yama can be killed.
- Heroic heresy: He has the option to disrespect the evil deity Kali, who will reward the player for sacrificing damsels, as they are among the most valuable blood tokens. However, there are other enemies in the game that have blood, which can be sacrificed instead.
- Fidelity: He never shows any lewdness towards the damsels in distress, because he already has one true love.
- Rescue: He often rescues damsels. The player is recommended to do this so that he gains an extra life.

Trivia
- Despite beating aliens and hijacking alien spaceships, he appears to have an irrational fear of spiders.
- It has been speculated that he has a deceased father, and he continues his "spelunky" quest in his honor.
- The player has the option to beat the game WITHOUT collecting any treasure, to unlock the "Low Scorer" achievement. It is considered to be one of the hardest achievements in the entire Xbox 360 console, since beating the game is something only 1% of players have done.
- Only 0.28% of players have the Low Scorer achievement, but Xbox 360 games tend to have inflated percentages due to console modding and hacking software for fabricating Xbox Live profiles. This means the achievement is even more rare than what the percentage is, meaning anywhere from 0.01% to 0.27% of people who've played the game have actually earned the achievement.
- On TrueAchievements, only 0.007% of gamers have unlocked the achievement, meaning it has likely only been legitimately done by less than 0.01% of players on Xbox Live.
