Greg Lestrade is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Mycroft Holmes) of the BBC crime drama series Sherlock. He is based on Inspector Lestrade from the classic series of detective novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
He is the Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard and often consults Sherlock Holmes to solve difficult cases. Despite finding Sherlock annoying at times because of his tendency to show off, he nonetheless puts up with him as he is well aware that he is far better at solving crimes than him or his team, though he is the only one who openly acknowledges it.
Lestrade respects Sherlock a great deal, and he is notably the only member of his team who Sherlock gets along, with the others (Sally Donovan, in particular) convinced that he's a psychopath. Moriarty has described him as one of Sherlock's only three friends in the world.
He is portrayed by Rupert Graves.
Biography
Greg Lestrade hired Sherlock Holmes to become a consulting detective at Scotland Yard. This causes controversy with his colleagues, due to Sherlock's arrogance towards them. Despite this Lestrade keeps him on and has high hopes for Sherlock and believes deep down he is a good man. Sherlock is eventually joined by a consulting partner John Watson, who helps out with the cases.
Lestrade, along with John and many others, believed Sherlock had perished in 2012 after a stand-off with Moriarty. Even though certain people believed (rightfully) that Sherlock is dead, Lestrade didn't believe this and came to accept he had died. Sherlock returned in 2014 having dismantled Moriarty's organisation, and Lestrade embraced him and was overjoyed at his return.
Trivia
- His forename is based on Inspector Tobias Gregson from Sir Arthur Cohan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes Canon.
