Dr. Eric Foreman is the deuteragonist of the Universal/FOX medical drama House MD. He is the current Dean of Medicine at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and former member of Dr. House's diagnostic team. Overall, Foreman's personality is the closest to House's, although he is often loathe to admit the fact. Though Foreman is far more outgoing than House, he shares House's introverted nature and is the least concerned about how he is perceived by others. His original role on the team was to serve as the team’s “break-in” man for environmental scans, but he soon developed into the only member of the team who was willing to stand up to House. By Season 4, he was the obvious choice to act as House’s stand-in when House was otherwise occupied. He considers himself the senior supervising fellow on the team, but Robert Chase is always ready to challenge his standing, and House does everything he can to undermine any authority Foreman may have. However, the rest of the team realizes that apart from House himself, Foreman probably has the best diagnostic method.

It has been speculated that Foreman's name is derived from the word "Foramen", which is used typically in medicine to refer to the holes in bones which nerves pass through. This is appropriate as Foreman is a neurologist.

Biography

Neurologist and one of the original fellows serving under House. Foreman is a black man who comes from an underprivileged background. House hired him because he was a thief and a carjacker in his youth. He is the last of the three original fellows to be hired, having only joined the team three days before the start of the series. House seems to favor him above the other fellows as, and Foreman serves as something of a foil to House himself, being the fellow most likely to challenge House's authority or question his actions. He serves as a fellow for House from Seasons 1 - 7 and becomes Dean of Medicine in Season 8.

Personality

Eric is intelligent, hard-working, and proud – which can veer into pretentiousness. Foreman has no qualms with being completely honest with patients and colleagues. But at the same time, he does show a good deal of empathy with his work, such as when he says, "I hate that I can listen to a kid screaming in pain and not even question whether I'm doing the right thing." Foreman is a talented doctor who should go far, but sometimes he needs to be less hard-headed and utterly convinced he’s right. A little like House, actually.
