Anne Margaret "Annie" Hughes is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Dean McCoppin) of the 1999 animated science fiction film The Iron Giant. She is the hard working, sophisticated, and widowed mother of Hogarth Hughes (her husband was an Air Force pilot who was killed in action), with whom because of this she is protective of as much as possible. She begins a romantic relationship with Dean McCoppin and is possibly married to him at the end of the film.
She is voiced by Jennifer Aniston, best known as Rachel from Friends. Noriko Hidaka in the Japanese dubbed version, who played Ursula Callistis from Little Witch Academia, Kikyo from Inuyasha and Satsuki Kusakabe from My Neighbor Totoro.
Appearance
Annie Hughes has a curvy figure, auburn hair, light skin, rosy cheeks, pink lips, and dark green eyes. For work, she wears a pink waitress outfit. Her morning wear consists of a teal short-sleeved shirt, a black skirt, and black ballet flat shoes. Her evening wear consists of a blue turtleneck, a purple apron, black pants, a black hair band, and black ballet flat shoes.
Personality
Annie is a hardworking, caring, responsible, soft-spoken, patient, and easygoing mother who loves her son Hogarth very much, even trying her best to tolerate his occasional rebellious nature. After the loss of her husband, Annie tries her best to help her family live. By the second half of the film, she starts developing feelings for Dean McCoppin and finds his artworks fascinating, though she can get awkward during their conversations at times.
Upon meeting Kent Mansley, Annie initially expressed kindness and respect towards him as he did seem nice at first glance. However, by the end of the film, she would eventually see who he truly is and would lose her trust towards him. After Kent was presumably imprisoned for his crimes and treachery, it is likely that Annie would learn about his horrible actions towards Hogarth; she would learn about how Kent harassed him and threatened to have him separated from her in case he doesn't tell the Giant's location just so he could destroy it without knowing if it's a threat or not. Additionally, she would learn how Kent lied to the military that the Giant killed Hogarth (even though he's actually safe with him) just to become famous, not even caring for the fact that his lie would lead to Hogarth (who is only a child) getting killed by weapons.
Upon overhearing Hogarth talking about The Iron Giant in the middle act of the movie, Annie became worried if the creature was real and was unsure if it was dangerous or not. However, upon seeing the Giant's very harmless and gentle nature, Annie's worries washed away and even comforted a saddened Hogarth after the Giant seemingly died when it tried colliding with a nuclear missile to save everyone in Rockwell.
