- "Tripe, Sybill?"
- — Minerva McGonagall to Sybill Trelawney[src]
Tripe is the stomach of a cow or ox, it is eaten as a dish.[2]
History
- "- you know you get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe."
- — Ronald Weasley to Harry Potter[src]
Tripe was one of the many flavours in the wizarding product, Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans. Ron Weasley thought that tripe was a disgusting flavour.[3]
On 25 December 1993, Christmas Day, tripe was served in the Great Hall at the High Table. Minerva McGonagall offered Sybill Trelawney some tripe, additionally humorously commenting on her absurd predictions she had just made as a double entendre (as "tripe" also means nonsense).[1]
Behind the scenes
- Tripe is J. K. Rowling's least favourite food.[4]
- "Tripe" seems also to be the surname of a wizarding Pure-blood family, since a Magenta Tripe was known to marry Licorus Black sometime in the 19th century.
- "Tripe" is also a British adjective meaning nonsense. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Severus Snape calls his student's essays "tripe".[5]
