- Sybill Trelawney: "You'll forgive me for saying so, my dear, but I perceive very little aura around you. Very little receptivity to the resonances of the future."

An aura was a term used to refer to a magical phenomenon[1][2] of unclear nature.
Description
Within the wizarding world, the term aura seemed to refer to distinct magical phenomena: an aura could surround a place or person touched by magic and could be analysed by Aurologists to determine the type of magic in question. For instance, the presence of an Obscurus in New York created a "sinister aura", and it was hoped that Aurologists could study it to determine its exact origin;[3] the aura of a witch or wizard was different from that of a Muggle or Squib.[2] Professor Sybill Trelawney claimed that there was a distinct correlation between a witch or wizards' "amount" of aura and whether or not they would be competent at Divination,[1][4] and Sylvia Pembroke's portrait believed that a new student was exceptional based on their aura.[5]
Squibs occasionally had a magical aura around them after birth, which could cause the Quill of Acceptance at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to incorrectly identify them as a wizard at first. True wizards, however, would show signs of magic later in life, whereas Squibs would eventually have their aura fade.[2]
History
Sylvia Pembroke's portrait was hanged in the Hogwarts' Grand Staircase in the late 19th century, and mentioned to a new student that she had never encountered an aura like theirs.[5]
In the 6 December 1926 issue of The New York Ghost, C. Williamsum reported that there was a "sinister" aura around New York, and that master aurologists had been called in from Seoul, Korea to investigate it.[3]
During the 1986–1987 school year, Sybill Trelawney greeted Jacob's sibling by saying "Your aura is as strong as ever".[6]
During a Divination class in 1993, Trelawney told Hermione Granger that she perceived very little aura around her, indicating that she had "very little receptivity to the resonances of the future".[1] Conversely, she once claimed Ronald Weasley's aura was "pulsing" during a Divination lesson.[4]
