Mutation was a Forerunner term referring to customized biological maturation to new forms or rates. The process was typically performed two to five times over the course of a lifetime.[1]
In society, a Forerunner's mutation determined the individual's place within their family, Maniple, or guild and was always patterned after the individual's mentor, typically but not always the parent.[1]
Brevet mutation was a term used to refer to the undertaking of risky, ad hoc mutations that carried higher risk of complication.[1]
An example of a useful brevet mutation would be when the Ur-Didact passes on his memories and part of his mind into Bornstellar, this allows the Didact to live on despite his original body and self supposedly being killed by Faber, the Master Builder.
Trivia
- The highest mutations in each rate gives male Forerunners a far deeper and more resonant voice, as observed in the Halo 4 Terminals and Halo: Cryptum.
