The YMS-16M Xamel (YMS-16M ザメル Zameru?) is a prototype long-range support mobile suit introduced in the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. It was developed by the Principality of Zeon and used by the Delaz Fleet.
Technology & Combat Characteristics
A prototype heavy mobile suit created near the end of the One Year War, the Xamel was armed with a foldable 680mm cannon, an 8-tube missile launcher, and a 20mm vulcan gun. In terms of its shape, it resembled a self-propelled artillery gun more than a mobile suit, which is manifested in its development code "M" from the model number YMS-16M, which stands for "Melza un Canone".[1] Despite its cumbersome appearance, however, it was surprisingly mobile thanks to the thermonuclear jet engine on its legs and rear skirt, allowing it to achieve a cruising speed of 220km per hour, rivalling the YMS-09 Prototype Dom. As with the MS-09F/trop Dom Tropen, its engines were fitted with desert-use air filter.
The Xamel had a two-seater cockpit, with the pilot at the front and the gunner at the back.[1] The pilot could also serve as the gunner if necessary.[2] The cockpit was located right behind its monoeye. Other than the addition of the gunner console, this cockpit was identical to the Second Phase Production Type cockpit implemented during the United Maintenance Plan.[3]
Armaments
- 680mm Cannon
- The primary weapon of the Xamel. Due to its massive size, the barrel was folded onto its rear skirt armor and locked when not in use. When firing, the barrel would unfold and sling over the Xamel's right shoulder.[4] It fired rocket propelled rounds, which had a maximum range of 50km.[1]
- 20mm Vulcan
- A single vulcan gun located in the right chest, it was likely intended to be used for distraction or intercepting missiles.[4]
- 8-tube Missile Launcher
- A missile launcher located in the left back, it would swivel to the front when used. It was a weapon designed for barrage fire.[4]
History
The Xamel was produced by the mobile suit factory of Zeon's California Base. It never went beyond the prototype stage and only three units were produced.[1]
In U.C. 0083, one Xamel was piloted by Delaz Fleet pilot 1st. Lt. Bob. During the theft of the RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis" from Torrington Base, this unit corrected missile trajectory for the Jukon-class submarine U-801 before firing its 680mm cannon at the base command center, killing the base commander Brig. Gen. Hawkins Marnery. It later attempted to cover for Anavel Gato in the stolen GP02A and was was destroyed by South Burning's RGM-79C GM Type C during close combat.[5]

Notes & Trivia

- Designed by Hajime Katoki, Xamel was originally known as Melza un Canone (メルザ・ウン・カノーネ Meruza Un Kanōne?) before the OVA Gundam 0083 came out. The mecha was since renamed as Xamel with design clean-up by Hirotoshi Sano for the final release.[6]
- The name Xamel is a katakana word play of the first word from its original name Melza un Canone by reversing its order: Mel-za (メルザ) → Za-mel (ザメル).
