Greek Mythology
Morpheus ("shaper [of dreams]") in Greek mythology is the god of dreams, leader of the Oneiroi. Morpheus has the ability to take any human form and appear in dreams. His true semblance is that of a winged demon, imagery shared with many of his siblings.
His equivalent in Roman Mythology is Somnia.
In God of War series
God of War: Ascension
Morpheus is a Primordial, he must have participated in their war along with his parents Erebus and Nyx. Since he survived it, he is probably a very powerful god, because almost all of the Primordials died in the war. It is possible that this was the reason that he could send all of Olympus into slumber without being challenged by even Zeus.
Another hypothesis is that, although he was a Primordial, he was younger than the rest of them, and may have been hidden by his parents, when he was still very young, like what happened to Zeus.
Rule of Olympus
Morpheus role in the Olympian cosmic order is to be an Agent of Night in the balance between Light and Dark, aswell as working with Hermes, the God of Speed in the deliverance of dreams to the mortals. Morpheus resides and rules over the Realm of Dreams, a bizzare world of endless night where imagination and reality converge, and time is distorted.
He is described as a counterpart to Apollo, as the second-representation of the Sun. However, he did not care much for the young Gods and wished to reign supreme himself, perhaps with his fellow dark protegonoi parents and siblings, if they so wished. His desire to bring down the Gods was shared by the Queen of the Underworld, Persephone and together they prepared their scheme.
God of War: Chains of Olympus
In God of War: Chains of Olympus, he took advantage of Helios' disappearance by casting the Gods and mortals into a deep slumber and began enveloping the Earth in a black fog. He then unleashed his minions such as Shades, Banshees and Morpheus Beasts upon the land. He did not face Kratos directly, knowing that with enough time the entirety of creation would be merged with his dark realm.
However, Morpheus had to retreat when Kratos returned Helios to the sky. Morpheus himself was never shown or appeared in any way in the game itself, being only a background character (even though a major antagonist for the first half of the game).
It is unknown if Morpheus suffered any consequences for his actions. Gaia stated that he retreated into the shadows upon the return of Helios, which would mean he went back into his realm to hide from the wrath of Olympus.
However, as he was never mentioned again it is not clear whether he succeded in staying out of the long reach of Zeus and his pantheon. If he did not, then his realm may have fallen into dissarray and chaos. However, if Morpheus managed to escape his punishment, he would be alive during the events of God of War III, the destruction of Olympus and the death of Helios and Zeus, aswell as the departure of Kratos. It would be a perfect opening for his return to the waking world.
God of War III
A costume entitled Morpheus Armor appears as a skin for Kratos, but the god of dreams does not appear himself, so what he looks like still remains as much a mystery; yet the armor and black eyes of the skin may give an idea of his appearance.
Although Helios dies at the hands of Kratos, it is not indicated whether Morpheus takes part in the chaos following the sun being blocked out. Either because Morpheus is avoiding the god's conflict or Morpheus' power unspoken does spread along with the other disasters. It is possible that Morpheus perished by the ensuing chaos around the world.
It is assumed that Morpheus is still alive since Helios's downfall would give him a lot of power, just like on God of War: Chains of Olympus.
Powers & Abilities
As the Son of Erebus and Nyx, Morpheus is a very powerful deity. The fact he was able to put the Gods of Olympus and most of Greece to sleep with little effort, he is a force to be reckoned with.
However, he may not have been very powerful, as he had to wait for Atlas to pull Helios out of the sky while the gods were vulnerable. Morpheus may have even been killed by the other gods for his crimes after the Chains of Olympus event. As a dark primordial god, he served as an Agent of Night in the order and rule of Zeus, with his resentment towards this status qou growing with the centuries. Without Atlas defeating and capturing Helios and disrupting the balance of Light and Dark, he was not powerful enough to do what he did, as the ruling Gods of Olympus stood above the older primordial dieties.
- Hypnokinesis: Morpheus is able to put mortals and gods to sleep.
- Oneirokinesis: As the God of Dreams, Morpheus has the power to manipulate the dreams of others, both Gods and mortals.
- Umbrakinesis: Likely inheriting this ability from his parents, Morpheus has control over darkness. He was able to envelop most of Greece in eternal darkness. He is infact an Agent of Night, doing his part in spreading and managing the dark aspects of mortal and divine existence. His domain is a realm of endless night.
- Necromancy: Many, if not all of his shades were undead warriors twisted by his darkness.
- Acausality: The laws of time and space work differently for the Greek dieties. Morpheus domain, the Land of Dreams is a realm where reality and time are distorted. His existence goes back before the Creation of Time.
- Immortality: As a primordial God and a quitessential, conceptual diety he is immortal unless killed by a fellow God, like a Primordial, Titan or Olympian.
- Conceptual Embodiment: Described as Dream Incarnate and representing one of the quitessential abstractions of nature, in his case Dreams.
- Realm Merging: With the absense of the Sun, Morpheus can merge his Realm of Dreams and Night with the rest of creation, taking over the supreme lordship of the cosmos.
- Cosmic Transformation: After such a merging would be complete, the entire creation would be re-shaped and formed to be like his own Realm, both physically and meta-physically, in terms of time and space.
