He sings this song as his audition for the New Directions. Artie, Will, and a few others seem to be impressed by his performance, while some seem unimpressed. Will stops him halfway, which angers Jake because he practiced very hard for the audition. Jake then knocks down a music stand and storms out. Will states later that the reason he stopped him halfway through the song is because he already knew by then that he was good enough and that Jake could join the Glee Club.
