Karen (カレン , Karen) is a minor character in the film Ponyo. Sōsuke and Kumiko are her best friends. She is a student in Himawari Nursery School. Sōsuke first meets her in the film after he brings his pet soon-to-become best friend to school.

Appearance

Karen has dark brown hair and pink bows on her pigtails. She wears a light-pink shirt with a white collar, darker pink pants, and white shoes. She has a light-green elephant plush toy that she carries around all the time.

Personality

Karen becomes quickly offended when Sōsuke didn't give in to her demands to play with her.

History

In Kindergarten, Sōsuke tries to hide Ponyo. Karen walks up to him. Then she asks him to play with her, but he refuses to do so, claiming he's busy and has a job. She calls him weird and turns her back and goes away, rather annoyed. Sōsuke uses the opportunity to look after Ponyo.

Etymology

The name Karen (3) is written in katakana (カレン), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (華蓮), it could possibly mean "flower, petal" (華) (ka) and "lotus, water lily" (蓮) (ren).
