Premise

Zombies, Run! is an ultra-immersive running game and audio adventure, co-created with award-winning novelist Naomi Alderman. Every run becomes a mission where you’re the hero, with our immersive audio drama putting you at the centre of your very own zombie adventure story. While you run to the perfect mix of heart-pumping audio drama and pulse-pounding songs from your own playlist, you’ll collect supplies to grow your base back home.

Plot

The story centers around Abel Township, a small settlement of survivors living through the zombie apocalypse. The player, as Runner Five, is sent outside the safety of Abel's walls to search for supplies, rescue other survivors, and uncover clues about the origins of the zombie virus. Over the course of nine seasons, Runner Five meets new friends, makes new enemies, and runs from many, many zombies.

In Season 1, Runner Five first arrives in Abel Township after the supply helicopter they were traveling in is shot down. While attempting to figure out why that happened, Runner Five gets caught up in the rivalry between Abel and the nearby settlement of New Canton.

In Season 2, Abel Township and New Canton form an uneasy alliance against the scientist Professor Van Ark, who may have created the zombie virus and has an army of fast zombies at his command.

In Season 3, a new threat emerges in the form of a mysterious individual who is capable of mind-controlling humans - including some significant people from Abel Township.

In Season 4, Abel Township teams up with young scientist Veronica McShell to try and uncover the secrets of the zombie virus, which seems more and more likely to have originated with the Vikings.

In Season 5, Abel Township has been taken over by a ruthless politician known as The Minister. Runner Five and a small band of rebels fight to take back their home from The Minister's armed forces, all while she tarnishes their reputation with relentless propaganda.

In Season 6, The Minister sways even more people to her side with the promise of a cure for the zombie virus. Meanwhile, Runner Five deals with the return of an old foe.

In Season 7, numerous factions have sprung up throughout the country, all lobbying for power. In the midst of this is The Last Riders, an anarchist biker gang that only wants to cause death and destruction. In addition, a new type of zombie emerges - one that is intelligent and nearly indestructible.

In Season 8, Runner Five and a small group from Abel head to the Far Hebrides in search of a desperately needed cure for one of their friends. While there, they uncover local mysteries and learn even more about the zombie virus and its source.

In Season 9, Runner Five and company travel to Tunisia after hearing reports that an enemy they thought was dead is still alive. They discover something that could lead to the eradication of the zombie virus, but in order to retrieve it they have to face a hostile military that seeks to stop them at any cost.

Gameplay

After selecting a mission, the player begins running in real life (or walking, or cycling, etc.). As you run, you hear audio clips that tell the story of the game. You will also hear brief messages from time to time telling you that you have collected some supplies, of which there are many different types. These supplies can be used to build and upgrade your Base once you complete the mission. The app uses GPS to track your speed, and if you are running you may hear a warning that zombies are approaching. When this happens, you have to increase your speed for one minute in order to outrun the zombies (10% increase is the default, but it can be changed if you are a subscriber). If you fail to outrun the zombies, you will have to sacrifice some of your supplies to distract them and save your life.

The Base Builder mode allows the player to build and upgrade their own version of Abel Township. Players use the supplies they have gathered during missions to add new buildings and expand the borders of the settlement. Each building add various stats to the base, such as current population, max population, morale, and defense. New buildings are unlocked after completing certain missions.

The release of "The Home Front" at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic introduced Home Workout Missions, which focus on exercises that can be done without leaving home, such as squats, push-ups, and jumping jacks. The Home Workout Missions provide an image and description of the required exercises on the mission page, and the characters will also explain how to do them during the mission itself.
